Teachers put up with such a lot I wouldn't mind if they had a Christmas shopping day off! :o

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 18/11/2011 16:44

Years ago the schools would have an "occasional day" off in november or early december specifically so the teachers could go shopping. I remember it well because both my parents were teachers and my sister and I would go to nanna's house for the day and be waited on hand and foot and adored and over fed and spoilt rotten and mysterious bags would be furtively stashed when the parents came home Grin
If I could stand other people's children I could offer to mind them all for the strike day for a tenner a head - I could pay for Christmas three times over I bet - box of crisps, job lot of fruitshoots, and a few bags of sweeties and I'd be set... they could play "let's clean the house" too Grin

OrmIrian · 18/11/2011 16:48

Well I don't think they would manage sheep. How could they? Confused

Our school has a shopping day on the 25th of November anyway. A shame we won't get paid until the 30th. I always thought they should make the shopping day the 30th personally...

Hulababy · 18/11/2011 16:55

I did consider the whole going shopping thing if the strike goes ahead - but then realised how much of a nightmare that would be. The shops will be packed with striking teachers and other public sector workers - and also with children wh are having the day off work as a result. Think I will stay home!

pointydog · 18/11/2011 16:57

Think of all those miserable moaners traipsing round the shops to the background noise of christmas songs.

Avoid.

Towndon you are my favourite. :)

I wouldn't go shopping locally on a strike day- imagine the abuse you would get if you were spotted by irate parents.

KittyFane · 18/11/2011 20:10

hidden :o !0 Are you going shopping too?!

My DH voted against the strike (for loads and loads of reasons) and therefore won't strike. He'll be too busy scabbing to go shopping.

KittyFane · 18/11/2011 20:15

Funnily enough, quite a few at our school aren't striking because it affects their pension.
I haven't decided. The choices are: go to work, stay in bed, go and rally, go and have lunch at John Lewis...

t0lk13n · 18/11/2011 20:15

No shopping....just the usual housework stuff that doesn`t get done in termtime!

MindtheGappp · 18/11/2011 20:15

I'm not striking.

Fraidylady · 18/11/2011 20:17

I don't think you're allowed to go shopping when you're on strike (goodness knows what would happen if you were spotted in M+S).

You have to be out handing out leaflets, or getting kettled in London, or sitting round a coal burner warming your placards, or sitting at home ruminating on your pension package.... pick your preference.

KittyFane · 18/11/2011 20:18

Nomatter what, there will be plenty of parents who will be annoyed because they have to look after their DC for an extra day who will find childcare a problem. :(

MaureenMLove · 18/11/2011 20:21

GMB voted 4:1 to strike today. I don't know what to do now!!

I'm Cover Manager, so obviously I won't be arranging any cover!

So I could strike in support or wait to see if the school decide to close, save my days pay and have the day off anyway. OTOH, if I don't strike, I'll have a good day anyway, watching SLT run around trying to not cover lessons! Grin

t0lk13n · 18/11/2011 20:21

I would look after all the children in my form class for a fee.....say £30 per child x 27 children = £810! Bargain!

jollymary · 18/11/2011 20:24

SO SICK OF EVERYONE BASHING TEACHERS!!!!!! you have NO clue how hard they work. And no, I am not a teacher, I'm a healthcare worker. Who isn't striking. Am also school governor. give them a break.

DownbytheRiverside · 18/11/2011 20:28

Confused I think there are a lot of teachers on this thread being frivolous, rather than teacher-bashing, jollymary.
I may do some Christmas cooking, if I go to a demo and get kettled or arrested it won't be an authorised absence on Thursday.
