I think it's all the war drums beating wrt to Iran, I have seen threads (yes I know it's fictional and 20 years old) , still, anything to do with Iran gets my doom senses a tingling.

LivingDead · 17/11/2011 02:07

I think I need to delete zerohedge from my bookmarks and add fluffykittens.com Grin.

iscream · 17/11/2011 02:11

Don't let it spook you. I refuse to take it seriously. If you are seriously stressed, stock up on a few cans and water, good to have around anyways. But I highly doubt the world will end in 2012. We could die at any given moment, you never can tell. Best to live each day fully, make amends with people you have fallen apart with, tell people you love them and enjoy life, so whenever you kick the bucket, you will not have regrets.

Bogeyface · 17/11/2011 03:15

Not even descendants of the Mayans that made the calendar believe that next year is the year.

2012 is just the end of one calendar, just as 31st December is the end of our calendar. And then another one starts.

Has anyone mentioned the OFRS yet? Then let me be the first.

TheHumancatapult · 17/11/2011 05:51

Just to point out lot of calendars were only 10 months in a year for quite sone time so . Someone's maths well maybe out and in their calendar 2012 was quite some time ago

cumbria81 · 17/11/2011 06:07

Even if it is in the end of the world (which, let's face it, is unlikely) what is the point of worrying about it? You can't change it so stressing about it is futile.

Tee2072 · 17/11/2011 07:42

The Mayan Calendar does not end in 2012. It's a myth.

'But scholars are bristling at attempts to link the ancient Maya with trends in contemporary spirituality. Maya civilization, known for advanced writing, mathematics and astronomy, flourished for centuries in Mesoamerica, especially between A.D. 300 and 900. Its Long Count calendar, which was discontinued under Spanish colonization, tracks more than 5,000 years, then resets at year zero.

"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies in Crystal River, Fla. To render Dec. 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."'

Source, just one of many many sources with the actual facts. Read them.

And it's really very silly to be scared of this.

HSMM · 17/11/2011 07:46

Maybe we could use the time we have left to be really really nice to everyone we meet?

LoveInAColdClimate · 17/11/2011 07:49

I had never heard this. My first baby is due in March, the world can't end!

slavetofilofax · 17/11/2011 08:28

I'm up for the world ending if it means my whole family goes happily together. I'd prefer it to be quick and painless though.

TroublesomeEx · 17/11/2011 08:33

The world is going to end?

Oh thank goodness for that.

Chocolategirl3 · 17/11/2011 08:39

seriously. what can you do about it if it does. absolutely nothing. so why wind yourself up over something you have no control about. Go out and enjoy yourself you could be dead tomorrow never mind next year. just saying.

HecateGoddessOfTheNight · 17/11/2011 08:44

Do you have any idea how many times the end of the world has been predicted?

ok, well, neither do I but it's bloody loads. Grin

end of the world - sky falling on our heads - gods going to smite us ...

Always been a human fear.

One day, I have no doubt, the world will end.

Either it will end for us as we will pollute it to the point that we render it uninhabitable, or we as a species will end, as most do eventually!

Or a great big meteor will smack right into the planet

or the sun will eventually die

Nothing lasts forever.

But - and here's the thing - whether the world ends in 2012, or a huge lump of rock knocks it in two Wink in a thousand years - there is nothing we can do about it.

Best to just live, enjoy and accept that when our time is up, it's up and no amount of worrying, stressing or running around flapping our arms in the air is going to make the slightest bit of difference Grin

Trills · 17/11/2011 08:45

Yes, YABU

worldgonecrazy · 17/11/2011 09:10

Can I just ask if the world is going to end, what is the point of stocking up on cans?

I would feel some sort of enormous privilege if I was part of the generation that was really around for the end of the world, scary but not many people in history would have seen anything like that. I suspect that the human race will have died out long before our planet ends.

Hurray for this thread, my husband recorded something on this and was watching it the other day, I tried not to watch and avoid it, but get getting bits of it. According to this documentary, it wasn't just the Mayans who predicted 2012, about 6 other non-related groups mention it too.

I have been having nightmares about trying to protect 3 children in an end of the world type scenario, and have been meaning to google this to put my mind at ease.

A huge part of me thinks its a just a crock, but there is this niggle that makes me worry.

Dawndonna · 17/11/2011 09:22

There's so much evidence to show the Mayans got it wrong, I really wouldn't worry.

gordyslovesheep · 17/11/2011 09:24

Yes I do - it was a rubbish film
