To think this is a bit rude?

DH and I are on fairly friendly speaking terms with a couple locally who had two sons that were at school with my DS.

I wouldn't say we were friends, we looked after their daughter once at very short notice (think a call at 7am on a Sunday) but since then, we haven't really spoken to them as one of their Ds's now goes to a different school and the other was permanantly excluded.

I only mention this because our only contact really was at the school run.

Last night the phone went at half past nine. We answered thinking it could be DH's family who are having a few things going on at the moment.

It was this couple. They asked DH if they could ask a favour. Could we lend them a fiver and drive them to the other side of town.

We declined because we don't get paid for another week, so the car is on the drive without petrol.

The place they asked for a lift to was a residential estate, so it wasn't a medical emergency or anything.

AIBU to think that this is out of order? I would never call anyone after 8pm out of the blue, and I just think this is a big ask from someone who is an aquaintance.

But DH and I are both working overtime at the moment and Sunday night is our only time together, so I may have just over-reacted because I resented the interruption.

You declined so that's that. They won't ask again, so job's a good un.
Why dwell on it?

MartyrStewart · 14/11/2011 23:54

I don't know, it just made me feel uncomfortable I guess. I probably am just being grumpy from being interrupted.

And it just seemed a weird request.

Not sure if it was rude, but seems a bit random!

pictish · 14/11/2011 23:55

Don't let their crapness stress you out. They're chancers, and on this occasion failed.
They'll have tried someone else before and after you...betcha!

MartyrStewart · 14/11/2011 23:57

Fair enough, IABU. Is this the shortest AIBU thread ever? Grin

If it is, I want you to tell me WHY they asked for this particular favour? Confused

They probably wanted to buy some weed.

jasper · 14/11/2011 23:58

it's certainly unusual. I wonder what was behind the request?
I am very thankful that it is a long time since I did not have at least five pounds .
It's a sad wee tale , really

dreamingbohemian · 14/11/2011 23:58

I'm not sure it's rude. It's exceedingly odd though. YANBU.

jasper · 14/11/2011 23:59

Is weed only five pounds?
Bargain!

MartyrStewart · 15/11/2011 00:00

Aw, Jasper don't feel sad! The skintness a regular thing here, but the bills have been paid and there is plenty of food in the house Smile

Well...my guess is they had a tenner, and needed another fiver for a half quarter.

MrsRhettButler · 15/11/2011 00:02

No jasper, well, not any proper amount anyway.... Maybe a tiny spliffs worth...

dreamingbohemian · 15/11/2011 00:02

I mean, odd because they barely know you.

As for why? you say yes to 5 quid, then when you are in the car they say actually can you spare 10? then having pulled the same on several other people they can score some ganja (or what have you)

Or, they had already scored some ganja and were just fucking with you

Definitely not an emergency, if it was we would have tried to help. And why the lift and the fiver? If it was somewhere they needed to be then surely the lift would have been the favour?

And not getaway driver. They asked if one of us could give us a lift. If they had wanted a getaway driver they would have specifically asked for DH Wink And the fiver would have been rendered unnecessary.

Regional dialect.
We say 'half q' here - but over in Glasgow it's an eighth.

But seriously, an eights (we say eights here, or Henry) is £25
