From their FB page

Our favourite fan suggestion of the week has been from Teresa who suggests a healthy alternative for cream in recipes. Why not mix flour with water and mix to thicken?

Thats crap isnt it. You cant make cream of tomato soup and instead of adding cream add home made glue?

Well no, not for cream of tomato soup but you can for lots of other recipes. There are lots of recipes where you add flour to thicken. YABU

AVoidkaTheKillerZombies · 09/11/2011 17:44

I think it means you to thicken the flour and water by stirring, then add it to a recipe that need cream.

Not to add it to things that need thickening.

Same thing innit? Grin

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/11/2011 17:47

I am never eating pavlova at Theresa's house.

squeakytoy · 09/11/2011 17:47

Flour and water is used as a thickener... but it doesnt help with taste. I would rather use creme fraiche, or just milk.

JaneBirkin · 09/11/2011 17:48

I agree it is nonsense. But why do you have sainsburys on your facebook Grin

Genius

NettoSuperstar · 09/11/2011 17:48

Flour and water mixed together is healthy?

Wow, I'll start eating it immediately, I'm sure I won't feel leaden at all Hmm

JaneBirkin · 09/11/2011 17:48

I add newspaper as well actually.

surprisingly good for thickening

NettoSuperstar · 09/11/2011 17:50

Mind you, I once read a tip in Take a Break or such that suggested keeping the crumbs from the toaster tray to use as breadcrumbs.

I'm not rich, but never that skint either

ThisIsANickname · 09/11/2011 17:50

I think they mean for recipes that use cream to thicken, use flour instead. Not recipes that use cream as the main ingredient.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/11/2011 17:52

Oh.

AVoidkaTheKillerZombies · 09/11/2011 17:52

Oh I see :o

I clicked in this thread and it said You Must Be Logged In To View This Page, that's weird as I don't think this thread is particularly contentious.

Is this a new thing?

MrTumblesBum · 09/11/2011 17:56

Nettosuperstar - I swear I am not making this up - I once saw a Top Tip in Take a Break from someone suggesting you use an old, used, disposable razor to peel carrots.

Sidge · 09/11/2011 17:56

I use Weetabix.

Thickens sauces and soups up a treat. And added fibre!

Sidge · 09/11/2011 17:57

PS I don't really, before someone thinks "ooh that's a good idea" and tries it...

valiumredhead · 09/11/2011 17:57

Mrtumble I suppose that's only like using a Y shaped peeler...

SmethWitchBelle · 09/11/2011 17:57

YANBU - cream doesn't EVER thicken a liquid does it? it adds uh, creaminess but e.g. you wouldn't put it in a watery gravy would you?

ChaosTrulyReigns · 09/11/2011 17:57

Mmm. Weetabix in Choux buns.

Lipsmacking.

KurriKurri · 09/11/2011 17:57

Hmmm - strawberries with flour and water

scones with jam and flour and water (healthy scone substitute -, cardboard)
valiumredhead · 09/11/2011 17:58

Cream does thicken.

God help us coeliacs if they are labelling it as a cream substitute Shock.

MrTumblesBum · 09/11/2011 18:01

Yes valium, like using a y-shaped peeler someone else has shaved their legs with.

squeakytoy · 09/11/2011 18:01

Have none of you lot ever heard of cornflour? It is what our mothers have used for years!
