Oh no, I wasnt saying TB wasn't commercial! But it is a very different sort of thing compared to HK. HK shows are saccharine sweetness and bright colors. TB is quite the opposite.

tigercametotea · 08/11/2011 00:16

And both my DDs love Disney films like Cinderella and Aladdin. Even the one who likes TB, but she just doesn't like HK.

Because I was introduced to it via twenty-something women who were conforming to a girlie-girlie ideal that demeaned them. Where it started, it wasn't for children. I find that creepy.

Rollon2012 · 08/11/2011 10:00

I thought it was a kiddies show?

OP posts:
LeNameChange · 08/11/2011 10:20

To my utter horror my DD's first word was "Kitty", meaning "Hello Kitty" and wherever she went and saw a Hello Kitty she'd shout "kitty! kitty!" (the shame).

sozzledchops · 08/11/2011 10:24

Is this for kids then? I spent some time and Asia and it was cringey to see grown women get all excited by HK, put me right off.

Clossaintjacques · 08/11/2011 10:29

Sissell Actually it did start for children, I had hello kitty stuff bought for me back in the early 70's as a young child.

Belmo · 08/11/2011 10:29

Right now I am wearing HK pants and socks, and my 2 month old is wearing an HK babygro. My phone and iPod are wearing HK covers.
I may need to grow up a little bit. :)

WineAndPizza · 08/11/2011 10:40

I think it's a bit weird...we're grown women, I think it's a bit odd to be wearing stuff designed for kids and wandering round with cartoon characters all over everything. Would you think it was the same if someone wore Mr Men stuff all the time? It's just a bit creepy.

Serenitysutton · 08/11/2011 10:48

It's tacky and used to be the preserve of Japanese teenage prostitutes. It's foray into the main stream for little girls is quite odd really, it has definate tones of peodophilia (or did in the early 90s anyway)

HeidiKat · 08/11/2011 10:53

Its associated with peadophiles? Can't say I've ever heard that before, its just a cute cartoon character AFAIK and my DD has HK clothes and toys, I like HK too and have a phone case with her on.

MillyR · 08/11/2011 10:58

I've never heard of it being particularly associated with either paedophilia or prostitutes.

I think there is a bit too much HK about at the moment, but I like the SanRio range in general. I had lots of stationery with the dog on when i was a teenager.

slavetofilofax · 08/11/2011 11:26

I LOVE Hello Kitty!

It reminds me of when I was little and on my once every two months visit with my Dad (now deceased) who lived in London and couldn't think of anything better to do with me than to take me into the Toy Kingdom at Harrods and let me play for a couple of hours!

Smile that's a happy memory by the way, I hope it doesn't come across badly! Smile

They also used to have Little Twin Stars from the same company. Does anyone else remember them?

tigercametotea · 08/11/2011 11:27

The HK craze in Asia was very very OTT a few years ago. McDonalds gave away HK toys as a marketing strategy but it turned awry as people trampled over each other and started fist fights in the restaurant over this. http://www.atimes.com/se-asia/BB12Ae01.html Article here I heard about it from friends in Singapore. I just found it unbelievable... But it did happen.

MackerelOfFact · 08/11/2011 11:27

It's just a logo really isn't it. I don't dislike it any more than I dislike any other logo. I had a record bag with it on when I was about 14, I thought I was pretty cool. It's quite a boring design though, I'm suprised people haven't got bored of it yet TBH. It's not like it looks different if it's emblazoned on your iPhone than it does when it's on your pyjamas.

tigercametotea · 08/11/2011 11:28

Buggered link here Article

FantasticVoyage · 08/11/2011 11:52

I like Hello Kitty stuff and I'm a bloke.

I consider it far better for DD than all that Disney Princesses shite.

ObiWan · 08/11/2011 11:58

My son has a Hekko Kitty Advent calendar this year.

I'm going to throw glitter at it to make it a bit more Christmassy.

He's a funny child.

Katiepoes · 08/11/2011 12:28

Hello Kitty has no mouth and never speaks. So the ideal woman to some men.

Doesn't bother me as it goes, Elmo is the character giving me a headache these days, one that doesn't speak sounds most refreshing.

MillyR · 08/11/2011 12:30

HK does have a mouth and she does speak in the cartoons. She isn't portrayed with a visible mouth in lots of still images, but that is also true of the male SanRio characters.

TheScaryJessie · 08/11/2011 12:33

I think Hello Kitty is cute, because she looks like Miffy the rabbit.

You don't see Miffy stuff anywhere.

Katiepoes · 08/11/2011 12:49

Scaryjessie come to Holland. Real name Nijntje (changed in English for obvious reasons), you can even visit the Dick Bruna studio in Utrecht. If you can get past the horders os shrieking Japanese people clutching bags/toys/books that is, they've even given Dick Bruna some sort of imperial honour in Japan.

Our house is full of the studff, I think we even have pasta. No Dutch baby gets away without owning at least 3/4 of a tonne of Nijntje stuff.
