... a Heavy Metal Group? Seriously. A friend said they were but they're not!

OP posts:
LadyBeagleEyes · 04/11/2011 23:05

Deep Purple, Black Sabbath were heavy metal.
Zeppelin were too, in their day.
Slade were fun, but charted in the singles, and as far as I remember that made them way too uncool.

southeastastra · 04/11/2011 23:07

slade were cool

people are trying too hard to categorise them when the categories just didnt exist then

ouryve · 04/11/2011 23:07

In my mind (no doubt incomplete and definitely overlapping):
Metal is various out of: Loud, Screaming, Negative emotions, Orcs, Wizards, Stoned, Warfare, Darkness, Demons, Leather, Howling guitars, Melodic base, lots of hair in the past, more of a British feel
Heavy rock veers towards: Loud, Shouting, shagging, party feel, girls, cars, pissed, chugging guitars, rhythmic base, denim, big hair, more of an American feel

BestIsWest · 04/11/2011 23:07

To be fair, it was about 1983 when I saw Dave Hill buying his stamps so not at his peak of fame.

I imagine in the heady days of the early 70s he probably had someone to do such things for him.

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 04/11/2011 23:12

No, Slade were never cool. Fun, but not cool Smile

BestIsWest am now enjoying the thought of Dave's stamp flunky.

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 04/11/2011 23:15

Even at the time it was called Glam Rock, although to be fair except for Jim Slade were never actually glam. A bit sparkly maybe if you count that top hat with the mirrored circles. Now Marc Bolan was a glam rocker who was actually glam.

AgentZigzag · 04/11/2011 23:23

'Orcs, Wizards, Stoned, Warfare, Darkness, Demons, Leather, Howling guitars, Melodic base, lots of hair in the past, more of a British feel'

Hawkwind's all that minus the negative shoutiness.

Any band that can get the singers extra digit stealing his stash into a song can't be that bad

midlandsmumof4 · 04/11/2011 23:29

Oi-don't dis the Slade. They're from my neck of the woods. Remember when they were the N Betweens....Grin.

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 04/11/2011 23:31

I was just about to post about how I fancy Francis Rossi in his very young days, but the penny's just dropped that that would be Status Quo, NOT Slade. Why the fuck have I got them mixed up??

Phew @ not revealing my lustful thoughts about young Francis Rossi though eh?

Confused
Lucyinthepie · 04/11/2011 23:31

One of my friends had a cousin in the Glitter Band. They were definitely not heavy metal. Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 04/11/2011 23:32

Glam rock....

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 04/11/2011 23:41

Didn't one of Slade have some sort of 'relationship' Hmm with Rose West?

(I know this isn't Sleb Twaddle, but anyway...)

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 04/11/2011 23:44

hahahaha @ Franicis Rossi Grin

AgentZigzag · 04/11/2011 23:50

You'd think that might be from before she was convicted for being a sadistic torturing murderer MoistWorld, but this article puts it at 2003.

There'd have to be something severely lacking in your life to have sustained contact with such a person.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 04/11/2011 23:56

Yes! That's what I was thinking - didn't realise it wasn't one of the proper 70s Slade chaps though.

Ew.

BestIsWest · 04/11/2011 23:57

Shock at that zigzag. BTW DP tells me he saw Hawkwind in our village hall (small welsh village) AFTER they had a hit with Silver Machine.

BestIsWest · 04/11/2011 23:59

Sorry. Apparently he was OUTSIDE the village hall. Oh yes, we have lived me and him.

AgentZigzag · 05/11/2011 00:05

I was deaf for a whole day (and severe hearing loss for the next) because of Hawkwind.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it BIWs DH (maybe with a bit of leb? Grin)

squeakytoy · 05/11/2011 00:20

that member of Slade who was upto whatever with Rose West wasnt even born when the band were in their prime... he was only 36 in 2003.. Confused

LadyBeagleEyes · 05/11/2011 00:35

I saw Hawkwind live in my younger days
I went to a couple of their after show parties...

PeelThemWithTheirMetalKnives · 05/11/2011 00:43

But did you ever see one of them buy a stamp? Grin

kiwimumof2boys · 05/11/2011 07:42

Most of their famous songs came out in early 70's and are considered glam rock - I hadn't heard of any of their 80's songs and had no idea they were around in the early'90's until the wiki link was posted.
Noddy Holder is so funny !

Pedallleur · 05/11/2011 10:54

Glam was coming in and Slade cannily moved into that market by getting the guitar player to wear metallic clothing,make-up, glitter and Noddy Holder had a mirrored top hat. They weren't Bowie or Bolan (the Kings of Glam) but they looked good and made loud, fun music

Towndon · 05/11/2011 11:00

They're a Christmas jingle group :o
