A friend came round yesterday afternoon. My toddler did a poo and I changed his nappy. The entire time I was changing him, my friend was saying things like "Come on mister, you should be using the toilet" and (in a twee baby voice) "mummy, mummy, I want you to potty train me". I have no intention of training DS yet as he simply isn't ready but I wasn't prepared to justify myself to her so I totally ignored the comments and she said them over and over again until I had finished changing him.

I hate those sorts of comments. I'd rather she would have been upfront and said "Are you going to potty train him anytime soon, swanky?".

You are not alone and you are not being unreasonable. I do what you have done, ignore them.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/11/2011 09:11

YANBU.

Ignore, ignore, ignore and smile, smile smile. Wnds the PA types up no end, as it plays them at their own game. :)

Besom · 04/11/2011 09:16

How annoying. Especially the baby voice bit.

SlinkingOutsideInSocks · 04/11/2011 09:18

P.S I have 2.9 YO who is nowhere near potty training, so >

Swankyswishing · 04/11/2011 09:19

Glad I'm not alone! Grin

Besom, it was very annoying, like you say especially the baby voice bit.

My MIL does the is ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME. It drives me absolutely dolally. It is incredibly rude and childish. She says "Oh [DS] when am I going to have you overnight, maybe mummy will stop feeding you soon so you can stay with me" etc etc. I don't respond, but little does she know that until she can stop this ridiculous childish behaviour she is never going to have DS overnight.

If your child was younger (and couldn't understand) I would encourage you to stand behind him, wave his little hands around and say in a baby voice "Hey you rude bitch, why don't you get bent!" (this is my MIL fantasy, I would never actually do it).

banana87 · 04/11/2011 09:22

I'd have slapped her. YANBU.

LeBOF · 04/11/2011 09:22

I hope you developed a cough which sounds like "Fuck off"- that's always a treasure.

ooh, she sounds very annoying and domineering - I wouldn't have her as a friend! Has she any redeeming qualities OP?

Swankyswishing · 04/11/2011 09:30

I think her heart is in the right place but she isn't the brightest spark and is quite childish at times.

Trills · 04/11/2011 09:31

Anyone who did a baby voice like that with me would find out pretty sharpish that it was not a good idea.

Do you actually put up with this? You must d, for it to happen enough to post an AIBU about it.

YANBU to dislike this kind of comment but YABU to not have cracked down on it.

Swankyswishing · 04/11/2011 09:34

I ignored it, Trills. Like I said she is quite childish so best ignored like you would ignore a naughty child.

With friends like that who need emenies.

AMumInScotland · 04/11/2011 09:47

One response to comments like "mummy, mummy, I want you to potty train me" would be to look totally puzzled and say "Oh I thought you knew where the bathroom is? Upstairs first on the right" as if she was actually asking for herself. Then when she starts trying to explain she was talking for the toddler you look puzzled again, and say "oh, right...." as if she's the total loon she sounds... Might get her to shut up, or at least force her to say "I think you should have potty trained him by now" to which you can reply sensibly!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/11/2011 09:47

A poster would consider slapping their protagonist rather than just telling them straight? Really? I know that was tongue-in-cheek but what is wrong with just finding a coverall phrase that suits you, dismisses the other person roundly but without making a big thing of it. I've always liked, "Indeed" (as a complete sentance) or... "Well, we're all different, aren't we. Thank goodness we're free to bring up our children as we see fit".

I just couldn't spend time with a person who did as the OP described, not without saying something, my teeth would be blunt from ginding. Shock

ElaineReese · 04/11/2011 09:49

Oh how infuriating!
You should affect a squeaky voice and say 'oh mummy mummy, potty train me in your own good time!'

Swankyswishing · 04/11/2011 09:50

Lying, I like the idea of saying "indeed" or "we're all different aren't we?" to her. Although she is rather thick skinned so who knows if she would get it or not. She would probably do it again next time still.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/11/2011 09:57

Swanky... or be PA back... gurgle in the same silly voice back to your toddler about "Silly people who don't know anything but have big, long noses..." Grin

Swankyswishing · 04/11/2011 10:16

Sometimes the PA approach is the only way.... Grin

YABU to allow someone who speaks as though she is your baby in your house at all.

If she does it again, just say in a babywaby voice "I finky winky people who are over the age of 16 but speak in babywaby voices need to see a fuckywucky doctor"

LydiaWickham · 04/11/2011 10:20

I'd go with (in suitable baby voice) "mummy's friend obviously doesn't know that different children develop physically and emotionally at different rates and not all little ones are ready at the same time. Maybe mummy should tell her friend to not dish out advice on things she clearly understand, or is mummy too nice to tell her to do one?"

Rollon2012 · 04/11/2011 10:20

God I hate when people do that really underhand and nasty, Ignore, ignore or if really pushed throw em' a look!
