to think that people in food courts should clear their rubbish away

went to my local shopping centre tonight, ended up staying longer than anticipated so decided to eat there

got food with 2x DDs, went to find an empty table and all the empty ones were covered with rubbish with one member of staff trying to keep on top of it

there are about 20 bins on this food court -how difficult is it to put your stuff in the bin ffs????

I ended up clearing a table myself for us to sit down -when we had finished eating DD2 took our stuff to the bin I'm not advocating child slavery, she enjoys doing it strange child and the man cleaning up went to help her and said thank you so enthusiastically, it was as if she was the ONLY person who had put their rubbish in the bin all day!

I am intrigued by this. A little while ago there was a thread on here about people leaving mess in the cinema, empty popcorn tubs etc. IIRC the consensus was that of course you should clear up after yourself. Some even suggested that if there were no bins you should carry your drink cup and popcorn tub out into the street with you, or take it home.

But in a food court, surrounded by bins, you should just leave your rubbish there in case you accidentally cause someone to lose their job?

I may be wrong but I'll stick with my assumption that any place that provides several clearly labelled bins probably wants me to clear up. And if no bins are provided, they're probably happy to employ someone to do it.

Wow, do people really think it's perfectly acceptable to leave their rubbish behind after meals? Hmm Or that it isn't made perfectly clear in food courts that this is what's expected? How antisocial some of you sound.

The other day I went to a cafe with a group of Mum's and babies. It was very quiet apart from us. Our dc dropped lots of food on the floor so I went to ask for a broom.
Interestingly enough the cafe assistant happily went to find one for me.
She did not wrestle the broom from my hands insisting that she would be made redundant if I swept the floor around our tables.

I went to a food court with DD last Saturday. It was really busy so there was no time for any employee to clear a table between one set of people leaving and another set using the table. I always clear up after myself when using food courts/fast food places. It's never occurred to me to do anything else.

aquafunf · 06/11/2011 22:23

have always cleaned away after myself as to dds. in fact, if i am in a morrisons or similar and they are behind in cleaning tables, i will happily clear the plates left over onto the service counter, without fail the poor overworked soul who is trying to keep on top will apologise and rush over to clean the table. at this point, a smile and nice comment about seeing how busy they are cheers us both along.
and then i laugh at the people wandering up and down, not sitting down "because there arent any cleared tables."

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 06/11/2011 22:35

Am I being a bit thick here? Is this like a supermarket cafe? Where you tend to have plates and cups? What do people do then - stack them neatly in the dishwasher?

cheesesarnie · 06/11/2011 22:44

glad im not the only one who had no idea.

Towndon · 06/11/2011 23:14

Not inconsiderate, just genuinely not realising. There's a huge difference, why can't you see that? Or do you just enjoy pointing the finger and not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt?

"So many inconsiderate people who do not clear up after themselves!"

ChaoticAngel · 06/11/2011 23:39

SPBB food courts are communal seating areas that provide seating for several food outlets. The outlets tend to be places like McDonalds, or use paper plates/plastic cutlery, that can be disposed of in the bin.

thegooseman · 07/11/2011 00:04

dear work shy have a challange for you i dare you to print off a medium tent card for each table that says Would all diners please put there rubbish in the bins provided thank you. And go back and put them on all the tables and see what happens. over an hour, or two It will work i am a prof of food i have dun it before it worked for me and now it,s normal lets make history you might need to speak to some one they will still need someone to wipe down the tables let me know what you do.

LapsedPacifist · 07/11/2011 00:10

Well, I obvo never eat in these places.

Ever. Don't people who are paid to do so, clear up after you FFS? This is so weird.

WTF is a "Communal Food Court" Shock

thegooseman · 07/11/2011 00:33

thegooseman · 07/11/2011 00:37

they are places like Kfc the big mac man pizza exp all use one eating place etc

yellowraincoat · 07/11/2011 00:46

This is one of my pet hates. It is so slobby and disgusting to leave your stuff all over the table.

No, you're not giving someone a job, you are being a minger. If you picked up your shit, the staff could be mopping, wiping, serving, generally making the world pleasanter than it is.

It especially bothers me in Ikea where there are signs EVERYWHERE telling you to pick your stuff up.

wherearemysocks · 07/11/2011 01:20

The title 'self-service' restaurant really does give it away. If they have to employ more people to clear your rubbish away then costs will go up.

Anyone who doesn't clear away their own rubbish is just plain lazy, or if they 'didn't know they were supposed to' then they are obviously so self absorbed that they can't figure out what is going on around them.

And you gotta love the snobbery of 'what is a food court - oh I would never eat in one of those places'.

Even in a restaurant with waiting staff I try and clean up the extra mess that my kids may have made.

My dh goes one step further and will even collect empty glasses (not just ours) on the way to the bar.
