if she is walking back by herself then yeah. thats what i say to my 11yr old.

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 16:14

It's going to be a very long and restrictive Winter for her isn't it?

Does she have a mobile and can she ring you as she leaves her friend's house?

Trills · 03/11/2011 16:14

If she goes to a secondary school with a schedule anything like mine then YABU because in December that will mean that she has to be home before the end of school, and therefore darkness is not a suitable way to decide the curfew.

fuzzynavel · 03/11/2011 16:17

My DS is nearly 14 and whilst maybe you aren't being unreasonable I certainly am. I still like him home before dark.

cheesesarnie · 03/11/2011 16:19

she finishes school at half two so she still has 2 hours to do what ever- 'hang'.
she does have a mobile.true

Yes. If she's at secondary school it may not finish until about 4 anyway, and there might be after-school activities (e.g. sports clubs, matches) she wants to attend. If you're uncomfortable with her making her own way home I think it's only fair to pick her up.

samandi · 03/11/2011 16:20

School at half two?? Good lord, things have changed.

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 16:22

My DS is 12 and he's at debate club now...won't be home until 5pm.

Mind you, the high road he walks along is still busy and buzzing with people.

Do you live out in the sticks OP?

cheesesarnie · 03/11/2011 16:23

yep kind of in sticks, its a 'market town' but not townyGrin.

MRSMONEYPENNY73 · 03/11/2011 16:23

Not being unreasonable.

The way I look at it is there is roughley 10/11 weeks before it's light again at 5pm again and that's going to fly by. Of course I don't suppose an 11 year old would see it like that. Mine are only little but I know when they do reach that age I'd still like them in before it gets dark.

Can't help how you feel about these things.

worraliberty · 03/11/2011 16:24

The clocks go forward at the end of March, don't they?

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 16:26

2:30?

Mine's never home till 4:45 anyway. Luckily her best friend lives in the same quiet street as us and we can watch them come and go. If she's there later in the evening (sometimes after 9 on the weekend) even though its so close either I'll get her or friend's dad will escort her.

My daughter would love a curfew like that. Here we only get a bit of dusky sunlight for a few hours in the middle of the day. The rest of the time it's darkness like you wouldn't believe. Absolute total pitch black.

cheesesarnie · 03/11/2011 16:29

Grin fantastic idea fidgety!

I'm a bit foxed by secondary school children finishing school by half two every day?

That's earlier than the primary school DD just started and DD2s preschool doesn't finish til 4...

What am I missing?

cheesesarnie · 03/11/2011 16:31

she starts at 8am.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 03/11/2011 16:32

Whereabouts is this? Is it a usual thing? I was (obviously naively) thinking that the DDs would be home later once they started secondary, not earlier!

Kladdkaka · 03/11/2011 16:33

They've gone continental. That's how it is here. Start at 8: finish around 2

SardineQueen · 03/11/2011 16:34

Blimey.

So shorter hours than primary school then? This is coming as a bit of a shock!

cheesesarnie · 03/11/2011 16:34

west country
dont think all the secondary schools round here do it just that one.she was delighted starting secondary school and finishing earlier.

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 03/11/2011 16:35

I think I will have to check out what the schools around here are doing.

Feminine · 03/11/2011 16:36

I would want mine home.

11 is still young ...I don't think its a massive hardship.

In a few years ...the dark world can be all hers!

GrimmaTheNome · 03/11/2011 16:36

SQ - I don't think its the norm. DDs is 8:45 till 3:30 - AFAIK that's still about standard

Ephiny · 03/11/2011 16:36

Get her a torch if it's as dark as all that!
