A simple AIBU? Child's Christmas present.

my 6 year old is Miss Independent and insisted on pulling my heavy medium sized suitcase off the luggage belt, both to and from our holidays this year. Thankfully it was on castors, so she managed it fine.

She's desperate to have her own luggage case from now on, and today, in wonderful TKMaxx, I found a perfect hard case luggage on wheels in a beautiful girly floral pattern. Total bargain.

Now, is it ok to hide this and wrap it and give it as a gift? Or am I being a tight wad and giving her something that she should just have anyway.

See, a nice and simple AIBU Grin.

YANBU. But then I'm renowned for giving practical gifts for Christmas so maybe don't take my word for it!

grovel · 03/11/2011 12:03

If that's what she wants, that's lovely (and enough). If it's less than you would usually spend then FC might like a subsidy from you.

gigglepin · 03/11/2011 12:03

yanbu, she will be thrilled!

My children always have essentials as presents. I would happily give this as part of the presents you give for Xmas.

YANBU I thinks its ok - but I would fill it with some other goodies if you have the budget!

We had luggage for the Christmas before we got married - mine was filled with clothes for honeymoon and DHs with chocolates and crisps Grin, which was a lovely surprise.

DoesNotGiveAFig · 03/11/2011 12:06

YANBU. What's wrong with something useful and practical as a present? I prefer those types.

Loonytoonie · 03/11/2011 12:06

Ah good. That's decided then. Have just bagged it in usual festive binliner (black) and am going to stick it on top of wardrobe.

I can officially declare that I have actually started Christmas shopping. Grin

Ah ladies, you should see it. It's gorgeous! Bright flowers on the hard shell, and inside is divided with zip protectors and pockets. She's like DH, so loves order. This is going to put a grin on her little face.

Good idea for little goodies inside. Perhaps a hairbrush, and some new slides/bobbles and maybe her own pretty towel. Aaah my little one growing up

I think that is a great present. I bet she gets far more joy out of this that anything else she may have had.

omgomgomg · 03/11/2011 12:18

Is she asking FC for anything in particular and will she be receiving that as well ?

Chez the omg's the purchase of all fun clothing items (you know, more expensive stuff with characters on etc) and small practical needs like battery operated garishly patterned or flashing light toothbrush, fun bath/shower stuff, chocolate, replacing lost torches, craft stuff, sweeties, tickets for events, camping with cubs equipment etc etc is suspended in the run up to Christmas and FC is therefore a very generous chap who brings all this stuff in addition to the toys they have asked for.

It's good to get FC to bring practical and useful stuff as well as the latest toy they have set their heart on. It also stops them seeing you as the provider of "extras" as and when they see/want them.

Most of this stuff goes in a stocking but you have a suitcase to put it in !

Loonytoonie · 03/11/2011 12:27

Bless, my children don't really ask for anything. When we're in Supermarkets, we sometimes do the toy aisle for them to fiddle, but unless they know they have 'spends' (gift money from relatives that goes into piggy bank instead of savings, or money they've saved - DD get's 50p for doing important jobs), they always put them back on the shelf without fuss when we move on. It doesn't occur to them to ask for stuff. I think I'm lucky.

YANBU. DD3 had a Winnie the Pooh trolley case when she was 8 and she loved it. Actually used it for years and in fact is stool in our loft. She is 19 now Grin

CocktailQueen · 03/11/2011 12:33

YANBU, that is a fab gift - agree with the others and fill it with other pressies too :)

anonymousbird · 03/11/2011 12:41

Oh grief, definitely wrap i up and give it to her. She will LOVE it!!!! She will view it as something special and grown up not something that you might have got for her anyway.

I am the worst person for getting "presents" for my DC which are things they actually need... just means they might get a slightly nicer set of PJ's/bag/whatever it is than they might have otherwise done!

She sounds super, and no, YANBU at all.

DejaWho · 03/11/2011 12:47

She'll love it - you could wrap some small things up inside it and use it as a kind of Christmas stocking thing.

I've finished my shopping... is smug.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 03/11/2011 12:57

Yep, was also gonna suggest you wrap some smaller stuff and put it inside the case - she will love it :)

RalphGnu · 03/11/2011 13:03

It sounds lovely and she will be chuffed to bits! It will make her feel very grown up.

spiderpig8 · 03/11/2011 13:05

however i hate, hate, hate kids at crowded carousels.keep them well back.it is so annoying when you are trying to swing heavy suitacses off and there are little heads in the way!! And kids pulling them off is even worse, they are too slow and bash ankles.

Thomcat · 03/11/2011 13:07

Perfectly good & acceptable present imo

mumofthreekids · 03/11/2011 13:07

Oh spiderpig! This was a lovely thread until your post!

betterwhenthesunshines · 03/11/2011 13:08

great present. Instead of little things (that may well be your stocking fillers) what about any new clothes - love beautiful new pyjamas or a dress for christmas?

Thumbwitch · 03/11/2011 13:11

I was looking at two travel cases in the shop today, one was Cars themed and one was Buzz Lightyear, considering whether or not to buy one for DS for when we travel back to England. I have a plain blue one ("airhostess" style) that he currently uses, but it would be nice for him to have his own for cabin luggage.

If I had bought it (and I'm still considering it) it would be as either a birthday or Christmas present.

ReebleBeeble · 03/11/2011 13:12

Id buy it, then put all her other wrapped presents inside and wrap the lot. Tell her its her only gift and watch the shock come christmas day! :D
