A simple AIBU? Child's Christmas present.

my 6 year old is Miss Independent and insisted on pulling my heavy medium sized suitcase off the luggage belt, both to and from our holidays this year. Thankfully it was on castors, so she managed it fine.

She's desperate to have her own luggage case from now on, and today, in wonderful TKMaxx, I found a perfect hard case luggage on wheels in a beautiful girly floral pattern. Total bargain.

Now, is it ok to hide this and wrap it and give it as a gift? Or am I being a tight wad and giving her something that she should just have anyway.

See, a nice and simple AIBU Grin.

Lovely idea OP Smile

Yes spiderpig...you shouldn't use this thread just to have a big rant that's not really relevant.

Anyway. Moving on.

muffinflop · 03/11/2011 13:24

If I gave either of mine a suitcase for Christmas they'd assume there was a ticket for a holiday inside Grin

allnewtaketwo · 03/11/2011 14:27

I think it's a great idea
In fact DS asks me for his own suitcase every time he sees a child's one. I'm going to add it to his Christmas list!

yanbu..... but ive bough ds some (sonic the hedgehog)underpants for christmas !

thegingerone · 03/11/2011 14:44

What a lovely gift and she'll feel soooooo grown up (which was sooo important to me when I was her age!) Love the idea of other little gifts inside.

I'm also one for useful but lovely presents. There is only so much plastic tat I can stand in the house!! The suitcase will get much more use than the "toy du jour".

JjandtheBeanplusPud · 03/11/2011 14:47

YANBU I got ds the toystory hard wheely suitcase for his 3rd birthday and he loves it! We wrapped and hid buzz lightyear inside it, his face was priceless!

DejaWho · 03/11/2011 14:48

Of course there's one fatal drawback of it as a present...

You're going to have to find some occasion sooner rather than later for her to use it with now aren't you?

boschy · 03/11/2011 15:11

great present - and also BIG, which is important at that age I think?! nice big parcel, you cant go wrong!

AnotherEmptyNest · 03/11/2011 15:17

Yes, buy a wheeled suitcase but please, please, do not get a pink flowered girly one!!. Don't stereo type her, please!!

Goldenbrown1981 · 03/11/2011 15:21

Have you seen the Trunki? Not sure if I missed how old your DD is but I bought one for my 2 year old niece and it is apparently suitable for up to 6 and they come in all kinds of designs. She loves it and takes it to the CM every day

pantomimecow · 03/11/2011 15:21

'Yes spiderpig...you shouldn't use this thread just to have a big rant that's not really relevant'

I think his/her point is relevant and in any case who made you boss?

Thumbwitch · 03/11/2011 15:35

The trunki is a lovely thing but not (IMO) appropriate for longhaul cabin luggage, the ostensible reason my lovely friend bought one for DS - because it has to be taken down and unclipped both sides in order to open it. I find the thought of it on a plane more than irritating - but it's perfect for car travel or anywhere else travel. The airhostess-style bag with double zip is far better for planes - never have to take it down once it's up, just open the zips a few inches and rummage.

DS's trunki is an orange tiger :)

Goldenbrown1981 · 03/11/2011 15:40

Re-reading the OP the DD is probably too old for a Trunki.

DN has used her Trunki between canada and UK and it seems like it was fine (although to be fair I was not travelling with her). Parents said it was great for in the stopover airports. She has the ladybug

Thumbwitch · 03/11/2011 15:46

To be fair, other people have said they're fabulous for airports as well, and I have no doubt that they are - I just can't handle the inconvenience on the plane, as I have mostly travelled solo with DS, so I need everything to be as simple as possible on the plane. I can handle him ok in the airport, he's a pretty good traveller for a nearly 4yo! Although not sure how we'll cope with the next trip, whenever that is, as he'll be too big for his umbrella-fold buggy... eep! But he does love to pull his own case along by the handle, so am still seriously considering the Buzz Lightyear or Lightning McQueen one...

mummytime · 03/11/2011 16:07

We got an original trunki for the airport, when DC3 was too big for a buggy but got tired walking around airports. They can sit on it and ride it. Ours had a shoulder strap so you could carry it onto the plane, and it contained all her stuff for the flight (and some of mine).

Loonytoonie · 03/11/2011 16:31

Thanks everyone. Case is duly hidden, and ready for Santa to collect and deliver on the day!

I'm afraid it is flowery.. BUT.. it's really bright and not very girly (if a flowery pattern can't be girl Hmm, IYKWIM) and it's also got a black background, so rather funky too.

DejaWho you're nuts! Grin How on earth can you have finished when I'm only on my first purchase?! And yes, we're going away a couple of weekends into the New Year for a long weekend, so she'll get the chance to use it.

Huge thanks for the suggestions to fill it - It's duly noted and to be honest, I wouldn't have had the imagination to do it. Can't wait to start looking for essential bits and bobs that she will love.

spiderpig I understand where you're coming from and I agree. In fact, the whole mob-thing at the carousel annoys me. It only takes the strongest in the party to queue at the belt, so why everyone has to bustle to the front I don't know. I always load the DC up on the trolley a good 10 metres away. Safer and we stand and have a gawp at the mob pushing for space at the belt. Nutters.

Oh, and the trunki is a no-no for DD - she's 6 now but has followed her Daddy in the leg department. Hers would've dragged along even at age 3 (we tried one) whilst little stumpy ol' me could probably still use one Grin

Sorry, I was being overstroppy. (if that's a word).

I was just enjoying the nice vibe of the thread, it seemed a shame to say something so negative iyswim.

but anyway, sorry.

confusedpixie · 03/11/2011 18:39

Do it and put some 'travel items' in it as fillers. Maybe a couple of travel sized games to go with the hairbrush, towel and bobbles? And even miniature bottles of her body wash (filling a small bottle from boots that cost a quid each Grin) or something, so that she feels that it's all for her next adventure! Maybe I'm getting carried away but it's a lovely idea!

agedknees · 03/11/2011 18:45

This thread is getting me all excited about Christmas. YANBU. It sounds like a lovely gift, and good idea to put in little pressies.

Loonytoonie · 03/11/2011 20:27

confused that's a lovely idea, thank you, and agedkness - it's got me a little festive too. Fab!
JaneB - aaah don't worry, I know where you're coming from. No real harm done, I'm sure.

Anyway, I'm now thinking up more things for my brood.

Anyone ever use a Teasmade before? I'm toying with the idea of one for my eldery MIL.....
