Had a call from friend earlier today to say another friend of ours has a tumor on her spine. GP has fobbed her off for ages :(
Same happened with dh, and my gp misdiagonised gallstones and sadly i ended up very unwell.
DD2 we were told had a virus but instead she had pnemonia, and so spent a week in hospital.

Cancer seems to be the thing they miss most often, especially if you dont fit target age ect.
I always feel GPs dont refer or do tests because of funding and people are dying, getting very unwell because of it.

Would just like to add to this thread that my GP is fab. There is one at the surgery that I don't like but I just ask not to see him. Receptionists are lovely, Drs are lovely and nurses are great.
My old GPs though missed DS pneumonia, fobbing me off with teething of all things. My DlateM's GP told her for 18 months she had piles. It was only when she had a secondary tumour come up that my DSis found out and kicked up such a stink that it was diagnosed as cancer. Too fucking late.
Thank God for having a sister that is a paediatrician and oncologist! And if this outs me to her then !

I don't necessarily agree Hidden. In the absence of symptoms, a low or borderline PSA has little meaning. And I doubt much would be gained by doing a rectal examination on a man with no symptoms. That said, I wouldn't personally refuse the blood test, as long as a patient was aware of the limitations.

hiddenhome · 02/11/2011 23:09

Hmm, I need to see the gp this week regarding the crepitus and pain in my right knee. I wonder what she'll suggest. Paracetamol or antidepressants Hmm We shall see.

hiddenhome · 02/11/2011 23:12

Yes, well he was refused the blood test and was told to watch and wait. This is unacceptable for a man with my dh's family history. The gp didn't even ask which type of cancer they died from (aggressive) and dh didn't volunteer that information, so everybody (apart from me) is labouring under the idea that everything is fine and dandy.

MidsomerM · 02/11/2011 23:12

What would you like Hidden, an arthroscopy there and then? Or would that represent a loss of diagnostic skills?

I sense that with you we can't win.

Why don't you see a physio instead if you have so little regard for doctors?

hiddenhome · 02/11/2011 23:13

I did see a physio for my back and he sent me to the Pilates studio down the road Hmm

and no, you can't win because I've seen too much failure and too many mess ups.

My knee was injured as a direct result of being in care as well.

Everybody screws up.

hiddenhome · 02/11/2011 23:17

You stfu.

The RVI in Newcastle messed up my son's challenge test.

DazzleII · 02/11/2011 23:17

Timidviper, could I just ask who decides which letters are scanned onto a patient's records? Surely that can't be part of a GP's workload?

Hiddenhome, I'm really sorry to read about the sexual assaults on you. Sad There are others on MN who have experienced similar; I have read their posts.

hiddenhome · 02/11/2011 23:18

Continue with your doctor worship.

I'm off to bed.

timidviper · 02/11/2011 23:18

Well if you've already decided that all of us who work in healthcare are rubbish hidden then it's fairly pointless having a discussion with you isn't it?

Have you ever considered that maybe your attitude might be contributing to your problems?

3monkeys · 02/11/2011 23:18

Dazzle, all post goes through the doctors and in our practice, those letters would be passed to reception to be scanned on

DazzleII · 02/11/2011 23:19

All of them?

3monkeys · 02/11/2011 23:20

Yep

DazzleII · 02/11/2011 23:21

Thanks. That's weird, then.

timidviper · 02/11/2011 23:21

Same in ours 3monkeys. Goes to GPs who initial it to show it's been read then send it for scanning and send a copy to any other practitioner in the practice who needs it.

DazzleII · 02/11/2011 23:23
Confused

catsareevil · 02/11/2011 23:25

Why is that weird? Its routine throughout the NHS for paperwork to be initialled by the relevant HCP before filing.

DazzleII · 02/11/2011 23:27

No, I mean it's a weird ending to my own little story outlined in previous posts. Not worth catching up on, though. Smile

grovel · 02/11/2011 23:32

When GPs don't get it right first time I suspect it's mostly because we (and particularly men and the elderly) don't present our symptoms particularly well.
My DH would hate to seem feeble by admitting to a minor symptom to a GP. The symptom might well be the clue the GP needs for a proper diagnosis.
I know it's part of their role to question us but they need our help in this process.

timidviper · 02/11/2011 23:36

Getting back to the OPs question as to how often GPs get it wrong to save funds. I have never once known any investigation to be delayed or witheld on the grounds of costs.

I have, on the other hand, known amazing demands from some patients and total disregard of the investment the NHS makes in all of us.

dikkertjedap · 02/11/2011 23:43

I agree with the poster who has more respect for the vet. Our vet provides 24 hour care, is always on the ball, has up to date records, excellent service. GPs don't work long hours where I am, no out of hours care - you have to go to GP in nearest hospital almost 1 hour drive.

3monkeys · 02/11/2011 23:58

Myvet charges me a small fortune for a routine vaccination. They also failed to realise my kitten was dying of feline leukaemia. And then charged me hundreds of pounds for doing the test and telling they couldn't do anything.
I saw 32 people today and didn't charge them a penny!
