Shameful for all the reasons below:

a) Ruins Christmas by exposing the truth about Santa's existence.
b) Encourages debt fuelled consumerism (easy payments)
c) could pressurise people out of guilt to spend more than they can afford
d) Attempts to make presents which are ridiculously look like the norm
e) Suggests that we should pass our hard earned up a generation by putting laptops on the knees of grandparents. Rich old people can buy their own electronic tat if they so choose.
f) annoying tune that gets stuck in the head.

I bloody hate that ad.

Let's see if MNHQ agree.

Never mind THEY, look at thyself.

And why beholdest thou the mote that is in THEIR eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

CherylWillBounceBack · 08/11/2011 09:59

Oh and the fact that the one you confirmed as true has stated that you are a shill, i.e.

"A shill, plant or stooge is a person who helps a person or organization without disclosing that he or she has a close relationship with that person or organization. Shill typically refers to someone who purposely gives onlookers the impression that he or she is an enthusiastic independent customer of a seller (or marketer of ideas) that he or she is secretly working for. "

Means that your posts are deceitful and are the ones which I have no doubt will be looked at closely. Good luck with that.

We know it's christmas! Littlewoods seem to have forgotten though!

I've never been this Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells before. I like it.

claig · 08/11/2011 10:04

'Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's laptop, procured from Littlewoods catalogue'

If Cherie Blair can afford such presents, why should Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells object?

claig · 08/11/2011 10:06

I'd raher be a shill than an empty shell.

Reported yet again.

CherylWillBounceBack · 08/11/2011 10:15

And once again, given that you have confirmed that your interest in this discussion is less than honourable, best of luck!

OP posts:
claig · 08/11/2011 10:18

The just need no luck.

BupcakesandCunting · 08/11/2011 10:22

Cherie Blair can afford to buy a laptop. Many customers of Littlewoods cannot.

Think about it; there is usually a mark up on goods in catalogues. For example, the Samsung laptop I bought from Currys for £399 (and it is retailing at this price across the board) is £449 in Littlewoods. This is because people will want to buy it but on a BNPL scheme. They want the laptop but haven't got the lump sum of cash upfront. So if they want it, they have to buy it from shite-mongers such as Littlewoods. On top of that, they have to pay 39.9& APR. So they will end up paying a lot more than the normal retail price.

Littlewoods and the like play on the "need" for such items via awful advertising such as this. They also target families with low incomes. If you could realistically afford a laptop, you wouldn't be buying one from Littlewoods, let's face it.

claig · 08/11/2011 10:26

Good point

claig · 08/11/2011 10:28

What is the Samsung laptop like? I have had my eye on that for a while.

CherylWillBounceBack · 08/11/2011 10:34

Err...I think Samsung make more than just the one model. Nevertheless, here's some advice, just make sure you get one with a Geforce 560GTX in it, and then overclock it until it starts to lose stability.

I was able to play Crysis at 1920 x 1080 with 8xAA and detail set to Ultra at over 60 FPS. It's scores on Battlefield 3 and MW3 are outstanding too.

isthisrude · 08/11/2011 10:35

I HATE this advert. I've gone through the Littlewoods website (yes, I'm that annoyed) and totted up how much it would all cost. The mother has run up over £2000 of debt.

It is cruel and morally irresponsible to encourage poorer families (who can't afford pay for items instantly) into debt.

The encouragement of greed, lack of genuine Christmas spirit and clumsy emotional manipulation in the advert is disgusting. I've never seen one that gets it so completely wrong. Where is Littlewoods' sense of corporate responsibility?

Besides that, what ever happened to Santa?

claig · 08/11/2011 10:38

I think there should be regulation of these high APR rates. But not all BNPL policies are bad. For some people it is the only way to access goods, and some goods such as laptops can be a learning investment that pay off in the long term.

It's like companies, some are triple A rated and get lower interest rates than others. But the fact that interest is available to others means that they are able to access it and buy capital equipment that is an investment in the future.

claig · 08/11/2011 10:39

Cheryl, I've been looking at the 17'' ones.
I have never had a 17'' screen and think that might be better.
But I am worried that they might overheat. Don't know if that is a problem with them or not.

claig · 08/11/2011 10:42

'I was able to play Crysis at 1920 x 1080 with 8xAA and detail set to Ultra at over 60 FPS. It's scores on Battlefield 3 and MW3 are outstanding too.'

I want to play bingo. Sounds like that will meet my needs.

CherylWillBounceBack · 08/11/2011 10:43

I have a 17" screen on mine. It's fab if you've got poor eyesight like me and if you're not moving travelling with it a lot then you don't really need to be concerned about the extra bulk. You can get a laptop cooler for 20 quid that sits under the machine and lets the fan's operate optimally, but i've never really had a problem.

excellent thanks Cheryl. I think I will take the plunge and go for it.

isthisrude · 08/11/2011 11:18

Someone may have mentioned this before, but a Facebook group has formed to try to get the advert removed:

Ive only recently seen this advert and what a total load of crap it is. Totally disgusting encouraging people to get into debt when so many are struggling to survive at the mo also the fact small children are banging on about the bling that mummy and daddy brought them for xmas!!? Totally takes away the real meaning of xmas .

I think what upsets me most is the equating of being a lovely mum with ridiculous gifts. When people are vulnerable- having to cancel kid's activities, say no to school trips, etc- that's just mean. I know some people on MN do the suck it up thing but we had to do that with ds2's classes this year (subsidised but still too much) and it bloody hurt and made me feel like El Shitto Mother.

Now, Dh and I did the credit mess before we had the lower income so we've learned our lesson and learned it bloody hard; others might be less battle hardened.

BupcakesandCunting · 08/11/2011 14:24

This is the Facebook page that I set up. So it is MN endorsed. Wink Grin

Doowrah · 08/11/2011 14:46

Couldn't agree more OP...glad to see a thread about it. Get it off air!

CherylWillBounceBack · 08/11/2011 14:48

Don't forget to include my original point (f) in any correspondence with the Advertising standards agency. This horrendous ditty has insidiously wormed it's way into my brain, so much so that I'm beginning to fantasise about sticking an xbox under my tree and giving my dad my laptop. I'm weak, but please stay strong the rest of you.
