You and me m'dear
they will probably argue that the tourism generated will bring more £ into the economy than it costs though

Towndon · 01/11/2011 19:05

I'd much rather watch the Jubilee celebrations than the Olympics TBH :)

slavetofilofax · 01/11/2011 19:05

Im happy if they want to use some of my taxes for it, it will be fun.

redyam · 01/11/2011 19:09

It will be a fraction of what we pay in our taxes for the unemployed and housing benefit. Stop being a misery and enjoy the spectacle!

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 19:09

Towndon....me too

EdithWeston · 01/11/2011 19:10

I hadn't heard about anything equestrian - can you remember any more about what the event is?

Here's an overview of the official events. I couldn't find out anything about who is paying. I suspect a lot will be paid for by the Palace though.

ssd · 01/11/2011 19:14

what spectacle?

I dont live in London Hmm

MenopausalHaze · 01/11/2011 19:16

Oh God - another one of these threads! Didn't we have one before the wedding? Of course we did. Just get over it OP - it's going to happen and you - YOU personally you understand - well it's not coming straight out of your purse....and if it didn't happen neither would the money be going into your purse. Leave it be ffs.

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 19:18

Op, it will be all over the media. You don't need to be in London!!

And what have 'children's centres' got to do with anything? They are unsustainable and the queen was here first!

ssd · 01/11/2011 19:19

Oh God - of course its coming out of my purse, I pay taxes

and I wont leave it be ffs

OP posts:
ssd · 01/11/2011 19:20

oh well tiffany, never mnid all the the centres closing around the country, the queen was here first

have heard it all now

OP posts:
crazynanna · 01/11/2011 19:22

Well,it will be coming out of my pocket, too, and I'm not happy.
I would rather my taxes go to the poorest in society...not the richest...and certainly not to some Royal almighty knees-up!

Pay for it all yourself,Liz...please.

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 19:23

What did those mysterious centres DO anyway??

they offer respite for families who need it

they offer a place to go for lone parents to meet others

they offer a lifeline to some families and they are closing due to cut backs

OP posts:
ssd · 01/11/2011 19:28

but who cares, as long as the queen has her celebrations eh

NinkyNonker · 01/11/2011 19:30

I think children's centres do a great job, it is a real shame some are closing. However I also think the Jubilee should be celebrated. The Queen is an international figure, it would look odd not to do something. It is all from different pots anyway.

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 19:30

I wonder how we ever managed without them thenHmm

EdithWeston · 01/11/2011 19:32

How much money are we talking about?

What is the estimated cost to the public purse, and how much is being funded by other means?

And which event has the horses?

crazynanna · 01/11/2011 19:35

I would rather abolish tax payers' funding the Monarchy than the abolishment of services that help some of the most vulnerable in our society. Any day of the week.

NotJustKangaskhan · 01/11/2011 19:37

I suspect the gifts, like horses, from overseas are probably from Commonwealth countries (and their taxpayers) rather than us.

natation · 01/11/2011 19:38

There are far greater misuses of tax payers money than the Queen's celebrations. From both ends of the spectrum.... I

wish more was spent on chasing tax evasion among the highest earners in the country and among certain large organisations... plus

wish housing benefit would be be quickly removed from those living in accommodation only those who had to pay could actually dream of living in, wish the WTC system were scrapped completely and replaced by a system which encourages people to work more than the minimum number of hours, wish incapacity benefit be removed from the goodness knows how many 1000000000s of people claiming it who are capable of working etc etc etc etc

PeneloPeePitstop · 01/11/2011 19:39

Erm.... taxpayer.
Funny how we can afford to pay for this overblown extravaganza but not for services essential to some - home help, cardiac clinics being cancelled left right and centre.....

LifeHope11 · 01/11/2011 19:39

I am very unhappy about what it is going to cost us. Comparing it to the expenditure on benefits etc is not relevant as these benefits are for essential services. There are a lot of very needy people in this country and their numbers are growing, the recession is hitting people hard, benefits are being cut back. It is only going to get worse over the next year and I predict that this Jubilee extravaganza will cause a LOT of ill feeling, rightly so in my opinion.

And it will NOT benefit tourism or boost the economy; they said the same about the Royal Wedding, now it is admitted that this event was partly responsible for slow growth in the last quarter; so had a detrimental effect on the economy overall. I have just found a job after a long period of unemployment following redundancy, there are many many people in a similar position. I bitterly resent digging into my pockets to pay for this as should everyone. The extravagance is unaffordable, besides being in bad taste and out of keeping with the times.

tyler80 · 01/11/2011 19:55

"The Beacons - for example - don't cost you anything."

I wouldn't be so sure about that, each local authority has been asked to arrange 6 beacons (to make up the 2012 total0. In the absence of local groups willing to make the arrangements I expect the council, i.e. the taxpayer will be picking up the bill.
