Agree, Life, I think it's pretty indefensible, really.

Why on Earth should we spend millions on one of the most priveleged people in the world in order to 'keep up appearances' when many families are struggling to survive financially. Yes, the amount spent wouldn't cover all the needy forever, but it could make a difference to so many.

And I can't believe the 'The Queen was here first' comment. How utterly irrelevant. Because the Queen is old, we should spend all our money on her?

EdithWeston · 01/11/2011 19:58

I think I've found the horses!

It's going to be part of the Windsor Horse Show, an annual event which is not supported by the tax payer.

JLK2 · 01/11/2011 19:58

Most people will enjoy having an extra day off work and celebrating the Queen's 60th anniversary of coming to the throne. Other people will just be bitter about it.

It's a one off event. It will be watched by millions around the globe. It is good for Britain and gives us a uniqueness in these days of globalisation. Why should we get rid of it, and in favour of what? More politicians? No thank you!

ssd · 01/11/2011 20:00

well obviously Tiffany you manage very well without them Hmm

but to some families they are vital and they're being cut back drastically whilst the queens celebrations are being funded by who knows where

No, in favour of helping the ill, disabled, very young and old and other vulnerable of this country.

Many of whom will have a spent a lifetime actually contributing to the tax pot.

JLK2 · 01/11/2011 20:01

And if anyone is worrying about things us costing lots of the money next year, there's a small event happening in London from 27th of July to the 12th of August that is costing us just slightly more than the Queen's jubilee.

ssd · 01/11/2011 20:02

the queen and the royal hangers on are supported by the tax payer enough without all this too

crazynanna · 01/11/2011 20:02

But how many more "one-off events" does this privelidged family need? The Royal wedding last year was a "one-off"...and here's another "one-off".

JLK2 · 01/11/2011 20:03

^No, in favour of helping the ill, disabled, very young and old and other vulnerable of this country.

The Queen is 85, and has worked her whole life, paying a hell of a lot more tax than most people on benefits ever have.

SlackSally · 01/11/2011 20:04

Fair point, JLK2, but that at least is to celebrate greatness and achievement and dedication by the world's best sportsmen and will leave us (hopefully) with a legacy (e.g. of improved transport in East London).

And it's not being lavished on a single, already incredibly privileged, individual.

JLK2 · 01/11/2011 20:05

The celebration is for the benefit of the people of Britain. I can't imagine the Queen being that bothered about it all, especially stuff like "beacons" being lit all over the country that she will never see.

SlackSally · 01/11/2011 20:07

How much tax has the Queen paid, exactly?

And how much tax, that she may or may not pay, is revenue purely from the fact that she owns so much land that she did, ooooh, pretty much fuck all to earn?

ssd · 01/11/2011 20:11

JLK2, well done you, you managed to get a little benefit bashing in there too!!

ill, disabled, very young and old and other vulnerable of this country must all be on benefits eh Hmm

most of the royal family are on benefits, paid by us, only theirs is called the civil list

OP posts:
EdithWeston · 01/11/2011 20:14

Grin at the comparison to benefits, especially as the BBC was reporting this week that HMQ is within a whisker of being in fuel poverty!

nancy75 · 01/11/2011 20:17

the celebrations are not really for the queen (she always looks bored silly by it all) A jubilee, like the royal wedding will attract tourists , I can't comment on other areas of the country, but i live in london and for quite some time after the royal wedding central london tourist attractions & shopping areas were much busier than i have seen them for a while. I am no fan of the royal family, but they do generate income through tourism, and events like the jubilee do give the country a bit of a morale boost.

MrBloomsNursery · 01/11/2011 20:17

Didn't she have a celebration for something in 2002? I don't ever remember her celebrating things like this before when I was a child.

MenopausalHaze · 01/11/2011 20:20

Ooh I do love the smell of bitter Republican in the evening after a whole day's stewing on the injustices of life!
Hark at you lot - like you're going to feel it in your purses

EdithWeston · 01/11/2011 20:22

The last (and only previous) Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria's.

For this Queen, there was the Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Golden Jubilee in 2002, and the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Flisspaps · 01/11/2011 20:27

I think George Osborne should pay for it out of his pocket money.

Alternatively, using the money to re-open centres and provide much needed services as a way of celebrating the Jubilee wouldn't be a bad idea.

ssd · 01/11/2011 20:28

MenopausalHaze, the only thing I can smell is the shite coming off your post

OP posts:
PeneloPeePitstop · 01/11/2011 20:30

I just fail to see why both the Jubilee and the Olympics have to be this extravagant given the economic climate at the moment.

slavetofilofax · 01/11/2011 20:33

Childrens Centres are not vital.

They didn't even exist when I had my youngest child 9 years ago, and our local once certainly doesn't provide respite. Single Mums can go to the park to meet people, like my Mum did when she was a single and I was 2, and met people that she is still friends with today.

There isn't a Royal Family anywhere else in the world like the one we have. I'm proud that we have them, and I love the big events. So do lots of other people, as evidenced by the amount of people worldwide that watched the Royal Wedding.

cantspel · 01/11/2011 20:35

Well i am happy for my taxes to pay for the celebrations.

The Queen has spent the last 60 years working for the good of this country. She is now 85 and still doing so. How many of you will still be expecting to work at 85?

ShellyBoobs · 01/11/2011 20:49

I'm more than happy to see taxes spent on celebrating something as special as the jubilee.

Taxes are wasted on far less worthy things than that.

GypsyMoth · 01/11/2011 20:50

Slavetofilofax.......VERY WELL SAID!!
