To think letting agent shouldn't have entered the house when dsd's were the only ones up.

Agent called in at about 9am to inspect house (we have no idea if we forgot this appt. or if they forget to tell us) DH was still asleep after working a late night. Eldest dd (12) answered the door and agent asked to come in to do house inspection. Dd said dad was asleep and she didn't want to wake him. The agent asked to come in anyway. So did.

I feel very uncomfortable with the fact he did this. I don't prescribe to the pedophile on every corner train of thought but I am pissed off he came in anyway knowing the adult in the house was unavaliable.

I also think he was very stupid to put himself in the position of being alone with two young girls, as a teacher I am aware of the possibility of false allegations. This being why you are advised not to be in a closed classroom with a student.

I'm also pissed off that when dh rang to tell him that we weren't comfortable with what happened he didn't take it seriously at all.

We will discuss with dsds about not letting anyone into the house they don't know. I can't imagine that they haven't been told it before but may need reminding.

Would I be unreasonable to follow up the phone call with an email as dh was left feeling dismissed or am I over thinking this?

Nope - i've called you hysterical once mumbling - and whether you choose to 'discourse' with me or not is a matter of complete imbuggerance to me! Carry on.

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 19:49

Oh and I know we didn't get a letter if it was sent recently, if it was sent 6 months ago then we are more than likely to have forgotten. I think asking for a reminder phone call is a good idea.

They must give you enough notice. 6 months isn't on. I'd be much more worried about that!

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 19:50

Imbuggerance! Great word, what does it mean?

Anon, we once had an agent who got shitty with me because I refused to let her bring people round that evening.

I would not have gone in - for my own protection - but I cannot see where the suggestion of reporting it to the police comes from. For the life of me I cannot see a criminal offence here - just a very great folly.

MenopausalHaze · 01/11/2011 19:52

I have no idea what it means, if anything, but it perfectly conveys my feelins re further discourse with that particular expert in the field!

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 19:54

Andrew, exactly my thought. Aren't you a teacher too?

Font - that agent sounds a charmer. Hmm

I think they often push their luck like mad. You don't need qualifications to set up as a lettings agent and the worst of them can be really crap.

Ours today got me to pay resign fees (120 quid) and said brightly 'that'll be a three pound charge for a debit card, 5 pounds for a credit card and we don't take cheques'. She looked gobsmacked when I said I'd go away to a cashpoint and come back with cash! So cheeky.

You sound lovely, btw. I am realizing how much of my posters are underlaid with me thinking 'fat chance of getting that out of a LA', which is probably very unfair as there must be decent ones out there. Somewhere.

NadiaWadia · 01/11/2011 19:59

Like mumbling and auntipicklebottom say, the agents can ask for an inspection, but are not allowed to just turn up if they don't get agreement from the tenant.

Unfortunately, a lot of Letting Agents are quite unprofessional and have very limited legal knowledge. Anyone can set up as a lettings agent with no qualifications at all. More government regulation is needed to protect tenants (and landlords too!).

The Letting Agent should have gone away as soon as he realised the situation. Not very sensible of him to continue with his 'inspection' with two young girls effectivly 'home alone' either.

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 20:01

Our is charging if you pay in CASH!!! Pretty much direct debit only. Plus we never resign, ways go to a rolling contract, they still have to give 2 months notice and you only have to give one and they don't charge. That particular agent made my blood boil, dh had to deal with her in the end as she always rubbed me up the wrong way!

No Font I'm a lawyer. Terrible thing to have to admit . . . :)

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 20:03

Better a lawyer than a letting agent though. :)

Did your DH wake up when the agent inspected the room he was asleep in? If so what did he say about a strange man in his bedroom Shock

I remember lying in bed feeding DS when he was two weeks old and LL walked into the room with a potential viewer (we were moving out so house up for let). They gave us no notice they would be coming round and it was 8 am! Funnily enough they weren't interested after that Grin

Andrewofgg · 01/11/2011 20:07

Thank you Font - that makes me a lot happier.

BreeVanDerTramp - Excuse my curiosity, but that of course is beauty of online, no looking anyone in the eye - bf or ff? And especially if bf what gender were LL and viewer? :o

AnonWasAWoman · 01/11/2011 20:07

We obviously need to swap - you can pay mine cash and I'll do yours cheques!

Ours has ganged up with our landlord and will readvertise the property if we don't pay resign fees. It does not make me look fondly on the profession.

I just suspect they would go with 'but your DD gave him permission to come in and your DH was there, and we did let you know to expect us'. You can hope, though.

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 20:08

Argh, Bree, that's dreadful! I don't know who would have been more shocked what with dh sleeping in the buff, he didn't however feel the need to inspect upstairs...which suprises me as if the pile of washing up was anything like it was when I got home then we will be getting our eviction notice soon.

OP posts:
BreeVanDerTramp · 01/11/2011 20:11

Grin I wish he had gone upstairs! Ours is coming on Thursday we are having to hide the dog from ours, as apparently responsible adults who manage to pay there rent on time, keep the house freshly decorated and well looked after and bring up two children aren't capable of stopping an old lab from destorying the house Hmm

BreeVanDerTramp · 01/11/2011 20:13

Andrew I should have been clearer Grin BF and both male! Lets just say I wasn't the one blushing!

TandB · 01/11/2011 20:15

Font - there was a suggestion made on the first page re: reporting it to the police.

Andrewofgg · 01/11/2011 20:20

Bree PMSL!!

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 01/11/2011 20:29

So, Font, what have you said to dsds re letting people they don't know into the property?

FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 20:33

Missed that Kungfu! Police never crossed my mind, I wasn't upset about it in that kind of way.

OP posts:
FontOfAllEvil · 01/11/2011 20:36

Well bibbity, if you read the thread you will see that they don't live with us full time but the next time that they are here DH will talk to them about not letting strangers into the house. I have already (including in my OP) stated several times that dsds will be spoken to about it. Does that answer your question satisfactorily?

OP posts:
bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 01/11/2011 20:39

Ooooh, just exactly how arsey are you?
