To wish this country was more dog friendly?

I know some dogs are badly behaved, but surely not all dogs should be tarred with the same brush? My dog is a very well behaved labrador. On the continent dogs are allowed into lots of pubs and cafes and in places like Paris dogs are regularly walked along City streets. But in the UK, lots of people do not seem happy to let dogs share their space anywhere, which I think is vvu.

Oh god, YABU IMO, dogs are bloody everywhere here and they get on my nerves. Every beach covered in dog poo, the park, the roads, everywhere.

And I'm from a 'doggy' family btw, my family are all responsible with their dogs but they are still really annoying.

aquashiv · 01/11/2011 09:43

Kidding arent you? Dogs were we live our king. They even get their own bins. Its children everyone hates.

DejaWho · 01/11/2011 09:43

Oh God you've done it now.

By the end of page 1 it'll be horror stories of how a staffy once looked at my child.

By the end of page 3 we'll get the earth shattering revelation that "a dog is not a child"

By the end of page 5 it'll be special needs and allergies.

By the end of page 7 it'll be poo, dog poo, with a detour down cat poo alley

Oh and we'll have the same old dog-haters, trotting out the same old stories, with the same old levels of gross generalisation as an ongoing basis throughout the thread.

(and by the middle of page 1 half the planet will have clicked the hide this thread button)

Remember we live in a world where dog owners have to apologise for daring to even own a dog in the privacy of their own home (see the Trick or Treating evil dog owner daring to have a dog claptrap).

YANU

CogitoErgoSometimes · 01/11/2011 09:44

YABU... They're only animals.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 01/11/2011 09:45

I like dogs. As long as you pick up their shit and don't let them off the lead when they should be on one, then fill yer boots, I say!

startail · 01/11/2011 09:47

Sorry that was a bit brief, it's just that I have a DH and a DD1 who don't like dogs and a DD2 who'd love one. So the less we run into them the more peaceful life I get.

wordfactory · 01/11/2011 09:47

Well it depends what you mean by dog friendly.

I'm a dog owner and I still belive all owners should keep their dogs under control at all times, pick up their dog poo etc.

YABU
In Germany dogs have more rights than kids. They're in supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, public transport, doctors surgeries, parks, ... And not all dog owners bother to put them on a lead when around other people, and many certainly don't bother to remove their crap. I'd love a euro for everytime I've had a dog bound towards me and the kids with an owner somewhere 50m away yelling either, "he won't do anything" or "he only wants to play". Meanwhile the kids are terrified and in tears.

MillyR · 01/11/2011 09:50

I find that the area where I live is very dog friendly. You can take them into lots of pubs and I see lots of dogs around.

I had to take two springer spaniels, two children and luggage on the train the other day, which was hellish. I assumed I would enrage everyone with my large exuberant dogs, but people were really keen to pet them and were smiling at the dogs. So the hellishness was purely on a practical level, not because of people making a fuss.

I think MN is unique in its level of dog vitriol.

SansaLannister · 01/11/2011 09:50

YABU. I don't want your grotty dog around me. Keep it in a park, it's not a person. Yak.

duvetdayplease · 01/11/2011 09:51

I think Dejawho is right. I really like these dog conversations. They are utterly pointless. But don't get me started on cat poo. That's even worse than dog poo.

DrinkYourWeakLemonDrinkNow · 01/11/2011 09:51

Well I'm not a big fan dogs but DejaWho's post really made me laughGrin.

'with a detour down cat poo alley' Rofl!

manicbmc · 01/11/2011 09:51

It goes both ways. May be more places should be dog friendly (I am not a dog person really) but then may be more dog owners should be slightly more considerate?

MenopausalHaze · 01/11/2011 09:51
VFVF · 01/11/2011 09:52

God I miss my dog Sad I'm worse than DD when it comes to passing strange dogs, am desperate to pat them all! (after asking of course!)

DejaWho · 01/11/2011 09:52

Can we just skip forward to about page 15 where it gets taken over by the dog lovers and we discuss fluffy, furry, slobbery balls of woof?

Wouldn't take my two into a cafe anyway - one's got a breadbun fetish, the other one drools too blooming much.

Annanymous · 01/11/2011 09:53

YABU. I hate going to a hotel or B&B that accepts dogs. All that bum shuffling stuff across the carpet where my bare feet have to tread. (That's a lie actually. I don't go bare-footed in public places.

slavetofilofax · 01/11/2011 09:53

YANBU. It's horrible when people say 'they are only dogs'. They are living feeling creatures that become a part of peoples families, and who have as much right to inhabit this planet as children do.

fedupofnamechanging · 01/11/2011 09:57

I am a dog thread virgin. The OP has opened up a whole other world, for when I get bored of MIL/SAHM v WOHM/P & T parking/bf v ff threads Grin

HazleNutt · 01/11/2011 09:58

YANBU. Thank god I don't live in UK, the hatred is just horrible. How dares anybody own a dog, what if I happen to ring their doorbell uninvited or maybe I - gasp - see their (surely horrible slobbering filthy aggressive) dog when walking outside. My eyes, my eyes!

maddy68 · 01/11/2011 09:59

I regularly take my dog to france belgium and germany
He has been on an open top tour bus, he has been in the poshest restaurants - he is very well behaved and just lies under the table. Its so lovely to be able to enjoy his company while on holiday without locking him away in my caravan and rushing back throughout the day

HazleNutt · 01/11/2011 10:00

Dogs have more rights than kids? So you can't take your kid to a supermarket, docor's surgery, park, cafe or public transport in Germany?
