To wish this country was more dog friendly?

I know some dogs are badly behaved, but surely not all dogs should be tarred with the same brush? My dog is a very well behaved labrador. On the continent dogs are allowed into lots of pubs and cafes and in places like Paris dogs are regularly walked along City streets. But in the UK, lots of people do not seem happy to let dogs share their space anywhere, which I think is vvu.

They don't make good pets, some people think that just keeping them in an aviary is fine, but they need exercise and to do what they do best which is to fly. All my birds have been rescued and to me they are members of my family and are treated as such, with as much love and attention I can give and they are willing to accept.

ViviPru · 01/11/2011 11:55

Thanks, sounds hard but rewarding

ditavonteesed · 01/11/2011 11:59

slightlymad, sounds amazing.
seeker I was joking, I couldnt believe that someone would go to that much trouble just so she could give us sweets.

TheScaryJessie · 01/11/2011 12:01

Seeker, I think Dita is making a joke about being deprived about the chance to stroke the staffie.

"If I go with just my Staffie, I have seen so many parents literally grabbing their precious darlings up in the air out of our way, and looking down their nose at me.... yet when we take MILs Cocker Spaniel with us too, its all "awwww look at the lovely doggies"... "

I find itninteresting that people who know about dogs a so rude and disparaging about people who don't. If you saw a snake that looked like a poisonous species, nobody would mock you and go on Internet forums discussing how stupid you were if you whisked your children out of reach- even if thensnake turned out to be harmless.

MillyR · 01/11/2011 12:41

Well I have to admit that comparing a cocker spaniel to a poisonous snake is entirely new and can't be ticked off on a dog bingo sheet.

I would be alarmed at anyone walking a snake of any kind at a National Trust property.

squeakytoy · 01/11/2011 12:49

I did not say they were stupid Seeker.. you said that. :)

And you (purposely I imagine) have missed the point I am making, that people make assumptions about a breed, without knowing the facts. The fact is, a child shoving its hand into the face of a cocker spaniel is more likely to get bitten, than if it shoved its hand into the face of a staffie.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 01/11/2011 12:51

I love well behaved dogs.

I don't love owners who don't pick up their dog's crap/dogs who can't walk to heel and bound about all over the place scaring other dogs and people/vicious dogs/owners who can't control their dogs but maintain 'he's just being friendly'/owners who leave their dogs alone all day even when they get distressed/dogs who bark all the time, from early in the morning til late at night.

I imagine I'm fairly typical in my opinions of dogs.

Right, I know I haven't read the whole thread (although I already know pretty much how it went) but I have to ask chickens about this post:

Hmm. I've just got back from LA, and dogs are allowed pretty much everywhere there. They are walking around shops, sitting under tables at restaurants (outside) and in one disturbing encounter for DH, using the urinals. And flushing.

WAS THE DOG TRAINED TO USE THE URINAL??

My mind is well and truly boggled.

And OP is NBU.

We love the fact that we can take Daphne everywhere here in Switzerland, she is less fuss and more hygienic than our children anyway.

Andrewofgg · 01/11/2011 12:57

Hello there, DBF, I hope you and your little menagerie (including the DCs) are well.

I?m not going to say what you think I am going to say. I am just going to say how fascinated I was by the reference to ?the dog?s bank account?. How the hell did s/he sign the money-laundering form?

DejaWho · 01/11/2011 12:59

Paw print on the signature space of course.

seeker · 01/11/2011 13:00

You are deliberately missing my point. It is no more ignorant and risible to not know the difference between breeds of dogs than between breeds of snake.
And as I have said, children should under no circumstances touch any dog they don't know without asking.

Quenelle · 01/11/2011 13:01

YABU

I don't mind dogs but they can be irritating. (Especially the one that pulled my tights yesterday because it wouldn't stop jumping up.) And I find dog lovers even more irritating. I have a friend who points out every dog she sees. And her husband points them out for her too.

I like trees but I don't feel the need to say 'Look at the tree' every time I walk past one.

tearsbeforebreakfast · 01/11/2011 13:01

You want the UK to be MORE dog-friendly? Really? You want them to rename it United Dogdom...no country is more dog friendly than the UK. Most people seem to prefer dogs to other people.

MmeLindor. · 01/11/2011 13:02

ooooh, are we on to cute dog pics already?

That is the "I wasn't really digging in the garden" face.

DejaWho · 01/11/2011 13:02

And now this thread is starting to progress as anticipated... usual suspects begin to emerge saying the same lines that are always said, the same intentional point missing, the same accusations of intentional point missing.

On to page 7 where the cat poo appears.

SarahStratton · 01/11/2011 13:03

With fairly good reason tbh.

SarahStratton · 01/11/2011 13:04

That was in reply to tears.

MmeLindor. · 01/11/2011 13:04

tears
It really isn't at all dog friendly.

Do you know how difficult it is to go for a cup of coffee in UK when you have a dog with you?

And there is no reason for this. There is no law forbidding dogs in restaurants and cafes, it is up to the cafe owner.

wordfactory · 01/11/2011 13:04

I had always assumed that breed had very little impact upon propensity to bite.
That this was about individual dogs.
Is that not right then?

HazleNutt · 01/11/2011 13:06

Tears, have you actually been to any other countries?

seeker · 01/11/2011 13:06
