£30 spent on World of Warcraft of his grant!

I'm i being unreasonable or is it ok for an 18 year old to spend his grant how he wants?

Part of me thinks 'he's 18 , it's his money don't fret' but the other part of me thinks 'you have just paid hard currency to a stupid game get a grip'

Considering most of them spend it on alcohol, at least he has a hobby and it wont give him a hangover...

He will soon learn though, when he wants to go out, and cant afford it..

So long as you dont cave in and sub him...

lesley33 · 30/10/2011 15:17

Its his money, so up to him. As long as you don't sub him. tbh I think its better he learns the lesson now about spending money wisely, rather than spend money on non essentials when he is skint with future DCs.

If you don't sub him,he will soon learn that not budgeting will leave him very short at times. And some people seem to need to learn this from experience, rathder than being told.

Misschief101 · 30/10/2011 15:17

WOW is the game where he will mostly sit hour after hour playing... At least if he's playing that he's not out doing z,y&z! He will become a hermitt like the rest of the players. Can you tell I have 2 grow ups who play this game forever!

CreamolaFoamless · 30/10/2011 15:18

haha

squeaky he got drunk once .......it was a complete mess , paramedics the works .

But £30 0n World of Warcraft ..is that normal?

worraliberty · 30/10/2011 15:18

What Squeaky said

Don't cave in and he'll soon learn Grin

DownbytheRiverside · 30/10/2011 15:18

WOW is a fantastic game that a lot of people enjoy and share. Would you have been happier if he'd bought 3 bottles of vodka instead?
Or hair extensions and some luvverly make-up?
You are the one who needs to loosen the grip on the back of his neck, he needs to learn to manage his own money.
Is the poor sod still living at home?

Trills · 30/10/2011 15:19

YABU, clearly, an 18 year old can spend their money as they like, and you shoulnd't hit people.

usualsuspect · 30/10/2011 15:20

He can spend his money on what he likes

YABU

RustyBear · 30/10/2011 15:21

Would you have judged him if he'd gone to the cinema five times over the year? It would cost about the same and he'll get a lot more hours of entertainment out of the game than five films - plus it'll help him make friends with other WOW fans who can't afford the game & want to come and play it.

EssentialFattyAcid · 30/10/2011 15:22

??? I thought there were no longer any student grants? Is this thread from the 1980's?

YABU - his money, his choices surely?

ZillionChocolate · 30/10/2011 15:22

What should an 18 year old do with his money? Take out a subscription to the FT? Invest it in the stock market?

YABU. Let him spend his money as he wants. Learning how to budget, or the consequences of failing to, is all part of growing up.

Misschief101 · 30/10/2011 15:24

CreamolaFoamless £30 is about right. I think it's the never ending game. I think it's not bad value for money when you think about it.

ragged · 30/10/2011 15:25

Are 18yos on "grants" not allowed an entertainment budget?
Plenty of them blow 30+ quid at the pub every weekend evening.

Dawndonna · 30/10/2011 15:25

Actually, £30.00 on WoW isn't a great deal, I know quite a few people who spend a hell of a lot more than that.
Poor thing, let him alone!

CreamolaFoamless · 30/10/2011 15:25

up

yes he does need to learn how to manage his money but this is a government grant not wages ......

OP posts:
DownbytheRiverside · 30/10/2011 15:26

If it's his grant from the government then why is it your business?

CreamolaFoamless · 30/10/2011 15:27

ok so I am unreasonable I still want to slap im for wasting his money

OP posts:
HildaOgden · 30/10/2011 15:27

YABU.

Now,if he was spending the 30 quid on Heroin ,then you might have a point.

BertieBotts · 30/10/2011 15:28

£30 is about normal for a game. The thing with WOW is that you also pay an £8 per month subscription which I think is mad. DP played it all through uni though and said it actually ended up saving him and his friends money, since they were staying in more playing their game, student nights out can get very expensive!

DownbytheRiverside · 30/10/2011 15:29

Does he get to slap you the next time you buy something he considers pointless?
Another handbag? A trombone? A selection of fancy knickers?

SchrodingersMew · 30/10/2011 15:30

Bertie I think WOW is free to play now until you get to level 20. Confused I might be wrong though.

CrosswordAddict · 30/10/2011 15:32

Hope he's not studying economics Wink

CreamolaFoamless · 30/10/2011 15:33

@essentialfattyacid Scotland is a bit different to England

OP posts:
Kayano · 30/10/2011 15:35

YABU

I love wow Grin I'm 26 lol
DH plays too

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 30/10/2011 15:36

OP, I understand why you feel that way! It is a pointless waste of money in your eyes and in mine, quite frankly. But I would have to take the advice of the other posters here when my DS reaches your DS's age - it is his money and he will have to learn how to manage it himself.

Still, it would drive me ballistic and I would want to smack him round the head (meataphorically speaking of course Grin)
