Just got a whiff of monster munch from the baby, could smell stale tea when pregs in living room, and was too embarassed to mention to dh but could smell rum n raisin ice cream on the stairs earlier... No one else can smell them so am I the only one with smell-lucinations?

Officially they olfactory hallucinations, I get them as side effect of sleep deprivation Hmm

Most strange but kind of nice sometimes

AgentZigzag · 30/10/2011 01:51

My mum and dads old house had a weird smell that was only in a certain part of their house, and only when visistors came.

I'd like to be able to say it turned out to be my dad, but that would be untrue and not kind Grin

I don't think they found out what it was, but the possibility of it being a ghost was the explanation they preferred Grin

Linnet · 30/10/2011 01:56

I used to smell Johnsons baby powder in my old house aftermy mum died. I didn't have any baby powder in the house but my mum always used it.

My granny would occasionally smell cigarette smoke in her house after my grandad died. Grandad had given up smoking a few years before he died and my granny has never smoked, but she would smell it now and again.

Solo · 30/10/2011 01:56

I sometimes smell my Dads pipe smoke in my car. It is the brand he smoked years before he died. I find it both sad and comforting.

I also get cigarette smoke in my car and at home and at my Mums house and I believe it's my now dead exh.

WeAreNewHere · 30/10/2011 02:56

I occasionally smell my late Dad's cigar smoke in my car. It doesn't last long but I'm always delighted to be reminded of him.

Bearskinwoolies · 30/10/2011 03:19

It can also be an aura, a warning sign that a migraine or seizure is about to happen.

25kilopumpkin · 30/10/2011 04:16

Yes bearskin I heard that, my nephew 7, told me, with incredible earnestness, that if one smells bacon and no one else does, ones brain is about to explode. Shock unless of course you just ordered a fry up I assume?!Wink how weird/lovely about the smoke reminding people of loved ones

Bearskinwoolies · 30/10/2011 05:08

although I sometimes wish for it when I do have a migraine!

ChildofIsis · 30/10/2011 05:51

I have 'ghost' smells too.
Whenever I've tried to explain to people they think I'm weird; which is fair enough; but I do smell stuff that others can't smell.

I can smell oranges at the top of the stairs sometimes and stale fag smoke in the kitchen, I've lived here more than 20 years and have never smoked or eaten oranges at the top of the stairs.

25kilopumpkin · 30/10/2011 07:11

I have read something about oranges...er, it's definitely a "brain" thing that one, it's to do with neural pathways or something. Not dangerous or sinister tho, Smoke I don't know but it's obviously v common. When I'm pregs I can smell cig smoke from miles away...ex smoker, sigh.

It can be a sign of a problem, i would get it checked out if it persists.

smugmumofboys · 30/10/2011 08:33

I frequently smell cigarette smoke but noone smokes in our house.

I made the mistake of cooling it and it threw up all manner of potentially life limiting conditions.Hmm

I think I'll go long with the sleep deprivation explanation.

smugmumofboys · 30/10/2011 08:36

Cooling it?? Sodding autocorrect.

Googling it.

Dawndonna · 30/10/2011 09:16

I smell bacon cooking before a migraine. No idea why.

TruthSweet · 30/10/2011 11:13

Some people smell things as part of an aura before a seizure/migraine. I think it would be best to get it checked out just in case something is going on.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/10/2011 11:18

I've had a burning smell sensation for about a year now. I'm on the referral list for a specialist. It's really unpleasant and I'm not getting the thrill I did from my perfumes and yankee candles anymore... :(

BOOareHaunting · 30/10/2011 11:19

I sometimes smell burning and a collegue reckons that ones a sign of a brain tumor. It maybe? but I have been smelling it for about 3 years now sporadically and have started mild migraines over the past 18 months so have just connected the 2.

BOOareHaunting · 30/10/2011 11:20

x posts with lying.

Morloth · 30/10/2011 11:23

I get a metallic/blood sort of smell as an aura for the really really bad migraines.

When I get it I know it is time to take evasive action.

worraliberty · 30/10/2011 11:23

I used to smell stale tea all the time...it turned out it was my son's deodorant?

It must be some sort of ingredient because I smell it in other deodorants too...usually the ones that try to copy Lynx?

Lunabelly · 30/10/2011 11:42

Stale tea, isn't that a patchouli base note?

OP, totally likely to be nothing, but a quick check-up wouldn't hurt.[hsmile]

ElsieMc · 30/10/2011 12:05

My late dad used to have auras before a migraine and complain of various smells in the house. Some are unexplained though.

We lived in a very old cottage for a number of years and sometimes I would wake up in the morning a smell a distinct odour of wet wallpaper. It was very strong and my children could smell it too. It wasn't there all the time though. We even got a ladder and actually sniffed the walls to see if there was any possible explanation. It was so distinct that I asked a friend, who was a chartered surveyor, to pop into my home when I was on holiday and have a look. He tested for damp and there was absolutely nothing. He smelt it too.

fortifiedwithtea · 30/10/2011 13:18

make a diary of what and when you have these phantom smells. Also would help if you note if there are any common cirumstances likes being tired, stressed or eaten anything that's a trigger. This maybe a symtom of migraine or seizure activity. For peace of mind you should see a doctor and a diary would help.

lookbutdonttouch · 30/10/2011 13:21

I too smell stuff that others don't. Some of it is real and I just smell it more deeply (if that's possible), and some don't seem to exist at all.

We live in a Victorian house and occasionally there is a horrid, rotten almost smell in DD's room but no one else can ever smell it. To me it is so bad I want to move furniture to find the source.

But instead I accept I an just odd.
