To think lane hogging is inconsiderate on motorway?

why do people hog the middle lane or even worse the third lane on a four lane carriageway? If you're scared to change lanes, stay in the slow lane? Sorry but it does wind me up, especially on a long drive. One of the fee small annoyances that get to me :(

SingleMan... I do the same as you - drive in the left lane if there's nothing there. If it's busy, I'm switching between lanes 2 and 3 but as soon as there's space, I move back. I don't necessarily stick to 70mph but I don't go mad either. I try to be considerate on the road and would never, ever lane-hog. The consequences for other road users can be catestrophic.

trixymalixy · 30/10/2011 00:02

Mango quite clearly was not talking about those kinds of situations though bibbity.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 30/10/2011 00:03

Lying - if you are switching between lanes 2 and 3 then doesn't that make you a middle lane hogger Confused Confused Confused ?

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:03

I'm kind of shocked that people are arguing against the rules of the road. How is anyone supposed to drive safely if we are all following different rules.

ShellyBoobs · 30/10/2011 00:03

at 70mph I'm not in anyone's way as I already have the right of way - as I'm actually already in the lane! I think your just looking for a reason to justify speeding!

Who the fuck put you in charge of roads policing, SingleMan?

You seriously take it upon yourself to drive in the middle lane when you could be in the inside lane, so that you can self-righteously prevent others from doing more than 70mph?

Hopefully you'll be caught soon and get some points and a fine.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 30/10/2011 00:04

Quite clearly?

FatimaLovesBread · 30/10/2011 00:04

I completely agree with you OP.
DH and I were very happy after approaching a middle lane hogger on an empty M6, a police car came up behind and he still didn't get the message. They the. Flashed a message saying 'use correct lane' and had to pull in front of him and back to the left before he realised Grin

Bibbity... If I'm switching between the lanes, I'm not hogging them, am I? I'm not like a pin-ball either; my default is the left lane, it's usually not as busy as the middle lane because the hoggers are in that one.

SweetGrapes · 30/10/2011 00:05

Exactly custard. Another m25'er here. And you should see the way people overtake me and then cut in soooo close. They're obviously angry! But what do they expect me to do? Disappear?
Again, left lane is full and slow. And I am in middle lane at 70. (Oh so stupid and dangerous me Hmm)

Of course, this is all when the traffic actually manages to go above 40 - so not often really!! Smile

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/10/2011 00:07

YY CustardCake... Coming out of West London at 4pm, the M4 is like being in a car park.

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:09

bibbity that's not the scenario I'm describing. I'm talking about left hand lane being completely free. Why would I be complainin about people in traffic?

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 30/10/2011 00:09

It is preferable Custard!, I have driven on the M25 a few times and I'm always horrified by the driving. On two separate occasions I saw drivers undertake on the hard shoulder!!

puffling · 30/10/2011 00:10

My pet hate is people sat in the middle lane with no one in front of them, doing 58 mph and not shifting. It's inconsiderate and could be dangerous.

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:11

M25 and m3 late at night are not that busy...

OP posts:
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/10/2011 00:11

I think that congesion is a huge problem. Some of the motorways now have active traffic management stating that drivers should use the hard shoulder if lanes are congested.

We just have too many cars on the roads.

SingleMan25b · 30/10/2011 00:12

ShellyBoobs - your quite rude aren't you? Maybe I could draw your attention to my other posts in this thread?

Anyhow, I don't speed and therefore don't currently have any points.

SweetGrapes · 30/10/2011 00:12

The european lorries!! I'm never even sure they can actually see me. One flick of their tail and I'm out! Is it just me or are they really bigger than the homegrown ones?

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 30/10/2011 00:13

Oh well I guess I find it unimaginable (mainly London and SE driver too). I have never ever witnessed someone doing 60mph in the right hand lane as you describe - and if it ever did happen then I think I would probably write it off as one of those odd one in a million experiences in life and not give it another thought.

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:15

sweetgrapes completely agree, European lorry drivers are scary!

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 30/10/2011 00:17

I hate when people are trying to overtake, but are only going one mile an hour faster than the person they are overtaking, so it takes forever to actually pass. In these situations I always think it's actually safer to up your speed slightly and just get past even if it does take you over the speed limit.

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:17

bibbity in London, I find drivers really tolerant and understanding... Outside London, different story. London driving is tricky so people are more aware of each other, find it blissful as compared to other areas.

Op, YADNBU! It drives me nuts. Of course it's ok if the inside lane is solid and slow becuase presumably you are then overtaking them.

The problem is when people don't ever want to move or don't want to move because they know in 3 or 4mins time they'll be pulling out to overtake again. But that's what driving is all about-making safe maneouvers as and when necessary. Those people who just want to sit in the same position for 50miles and never move because they are nervous on the motorway really shouldn't be there.

Oh and all the talk about slip roads-the vast majority of slip roads on our motorway system are not the ones where the lane goes off but rather just a slip road off so no need to keep pulling in unless you mean to let others join the traffic which is just common courtesy.

What I find even worse than this on the motorway though is when it happens on a 2lane dual carriageway. People just pick a lane and never pull over usually because they want to turn right in 3miles! Hmm Hmm

lovingthecoast · 30/10/2011 00:45

I have driven up and down the M6 in the middle of the night and seen idiots driving up the middle when you only encounter another car every couple of minutes.

Yet, there they are, sitting in the middle lane, all hunched up close to the steering wheel paying no attention whatsoever to others around them. What are these people on?
