To think lane hogging is inconsiderate on motorway?

why do people hog the middle lane or even worse the third lane on a four lane carriageway? If you're scared to change lanes, stay in the slow lane? Sorry but it does wind me up, especially on a long drive. One of the fee small annoyances that get to me :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe - It's nonsense to think that a lorry can't move into the middle lane? Moreover, at 70mph I'm not in anyone's way as I already have the right of way - as I'm actually already in the lane! I think your just looking for a reason to justify speeding!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/10/2011 23:49

Milly... You would always let cars in from the slip road although they don't have right of way but, whether you pull out to the second lane or slow down in the first so that they can get in, either is fine.

Tanith · 29/10/2011 23:49

When I was at school, my friend's mum was pulled over by the police for hogging the middle lane. There were no cars in the left hand lane and she was told in no uncertain terms that she should be keeping to the left. I remember her being quite outraged about it.

If I get someone driving inches away from my boot, I flick the hazard lights on. 9 times out of 10, they back off sharpish. It makes me think that they're actually not aware they're doing it but are on some sort of auto-pilot or half-asleep or something.
Of course, the rude what-sits who flash their lights and sound their horns are just ill-mannered roadhogs. Best to get out of their way asap and pray for a speed-trap round the next bend Grin

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 29/10/2011 23:49

Oh ha haa! I SEE what you mean now!!!! Hmm.

Roffle at the idea of any motorway lanes ever being clear.

trixymalixy · 29/10/2011 23:50

Exactly Milly, lane hogging can be just as dangerous as exceeding the speed limit, but the idiots doing it are so oblivious they don't realise.

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 23:50

It's a simple rule, I'm actually concerned about motor way driving from hearing your responses.

unpa1dcar3r - why should I or anyone else accommodate your speeding?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/10/2011 23:51

SingleMan... The Highway Code section relevant is already posted. You drive in the left lane unless you want to overtake. You are in people's way hence the flashing lights and beeping (which is rude, yes), but you're not driving according to the rules either.

trixymalixy · 29/10/2011 23:51

My Mum was once pulled over by the police for middle lane hogging too.

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 29/10/2011 23:52

Why is it more dangerous to overtake a car in lane 2 than it is to overtake a car in lane 1 - can anyone explain that to me?

Singleman why would you think it ok to just sit in the middle lane? It's against the law just as much as speeding. In fact much more than me doing 72MPH!

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 29/10/2011 23:54

Exactly CustardCake. But Mango seems unable to grasp this simple truth.

trixymalixy · 29/10/2011 23:54

I'm from Scotland Custard, so the middle lane hogging scenario is much more common up here and in the north of England where the motorways are quieter.

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 23:55

custard not on the journey I've just done, believe me...

MillyR · 29/10/2011 23:55

What do you mean bibbity? Do you mean when somebody in the inside lane drives faster than a person in the middle lane, or do you mean the relative dangers of using third lane to overtake somebody in the middle lane compared to using the middle lane to overtake somebody in the inside lane?

SingleMan25b · 29/10/2011 23:56

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe - if there's nothing in the left hand lane I drive in it - but it's seldom the case. I also overtake in the third lane but at 70mph.

Why do you speed?

bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 29/10/2011 23:56

Your second point Milly. Everyone knows that undertaking is against the law, surely.

MangoMonster · 29/10/2011 23:57

bibbity it really depends on the road and time of day. I am not stupid, as I have made clear in my earlier posts.

OP posts:
SingleMan25b · 29/10/2011 23:57

unpa1dcar3r - as above - why do you speed?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/10/2011 23:58

Bibbity... Generally because the traffic is faster in lane 3 than in lane 2 which is faster than in lane 1. I don't think it's more dangerous as such though, just faster speeds.

Personally I think that middle lane hoggers take their life in their hands. Lorries are apt to pull out with little warning, there's quite a bit of undertaking due to the hoggers and people are generally aggressive towards those who take it on themselves to restrict other vehicle movements by sitting in one lane - middle or third.

MillyR · 29/10/2011 23:59

I suppose it depends on the way the person in the middle lane is driving. If you can see that they are overtaking somebody then you can predict their behaviour more accurately because they are following the rules. If they are driving in the middle lane for some unknown reason then it is harder to predict what they are going to do next and so more dangerous to overtake them.

Undertaking is not absolutely agaisnt the law

268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

Which means most motorways at peak times

MangoMonster · 30/10/2011 00:00

Most people drive a little over 70, it's a fact.

OP posts:
bibbitybobbitybloodyaxe · 30/10/2011 00:00

I am not saying you are stupid but you seem to have failed to take on board that on many motorways it is impossible to drive at more than 55/60 mph without staying permanently in the middle lane. There is simply no time or space to get back into the left hand lane without immediately having to pull out again.
But at last you have now acknowledged that.
