To be upset that the first time my baby laughed it wasn't because of me?

DD is my pfb and it was my SIL who first made her laugh. At first I couldn't stop laughing too and it was honestly one of the most wonderful things I've ever heard. This was earlier on in the week and since then I have tried everything to try and get her to laugh again but she won't! She went to MIL's yesterday without me (I'm not very well) and was laughing again. Why can't I get her to laugh? AIBU to feel ever so slightly heart broken that the first time she laughed it was for someone else?

You are and you aren't being unreasonable Smile

LeoTheLateBloomer · 29/10/2011 17:26

YANBU for being upset. My DD was watching me have a poo when she first laughed (Hmm) so they're not necessarily laughing at people or things that they find 'funny' as such. (I hope).

It also took ages for her to start laughing with any regularity, so don't panic! You'll get plenty of giggles yet Smile

JamieComeHome · 29/10/2011 17:28

My DS1 used to smile most at the tassels on the sofa throw.

Try raspberries on the neck. This used to make DS2 laugh like a drain

JamieComeHome · 29/10/2011 17:30

DS2 smiled, laughed, and spoke to DS1 first. Bit him first too.

Aaaaaaww

Magneto · 29/10/2011 17:34

But you see, you are mummy and therefore you are boring because you are always there and can be counted on to be their slave care. I speak as an experienced "boring" mummy here.

Dinner served by mummy is not right, but MILs dinners are fine.
Nappies changed by mummy cause hysterical tantrums but when mil does it all is calm.
Baths given by mummy are horrible frightening things and as little water as possible should touch the baby. When my mum bathes him he is practically swimming like a fish.
If mummy says no to something it is The End of The World, but he always listens to daddy.
I could go on and on and on but you get the picture.
However, mummy going to work is sooo much meaner than daddy going to work so I think I'm appreciated really!

TidyDancer · 29/10/2011 17:34

You are being very sweetly silly. Totally understandable that you are feeling sad that it wasn't you she laughed for, but there will be so many giggly moments for the two of you to have as she grows up.

JamieComeHome · 29/10/2011 17:35

true Magneto. Little sausage during the day. Daddy comes home and the light of the world shines forth from their little faces

WitchesBroomForMyChin · 29/10/2011 17:37

Magneto that explains why she howls when I change her nappy and smiles when DP does it. She won't laugh for DP though either. Perhaps we are dull dull parents, poor baby Hmm.

Did you see the Friends episode where Ross and Rachel were trying to make their baby laugh?

I think the best way is to be laughing yourself, or to make them jump (with Boo! not with a real scare!)

mousyfledermaus · 29/10/2011 17:39

so true magneto.
ds first hearty laugh was when dh took his shirt off nex to him.
such a lovely sound!

Eglu · 29/10/2011 17:40

DD would only laugh for DS1 for weeks I was gutted and she isn't my pfb. She is no. 3.

ImperialBlether · 29/10/2011 17:55

That is so funny, Jamie.

WitchesBroomForMyChin · 29/10/2011 17:57

Think I'll try that next Jamie.

I know. It really cheers you up, doesn't it. The baby's so hysterical he's nearly crying at one point.

As an aside, I also found this Watch until at least 41 secs in

WitchesBroomForMyChin · 29/10/2011 18:03

That's brilliant, especially the part where the baby attempted that swan arm movement thing she does Grin

YANBU for being disappointed, we all want all the firsts! As consolation DS2s first smile was at 2am in hospital at the doctor who'd just put his canula in.......

JamieComeHome · 29/10/2011 18:11

It just shows how adept at copying they are. Am slightly wondering at the appropriateness of baby watching sexy video

ImperialBlether · 29/10/2011 18:16

I'm crying with laughter at that baby dancing. Are you really worried about that, Jamie? She's just watching a bunch of people dancing, surely?

WanderingSheep · 29/10/2011 18:19

The first time DD1 smiled was at the HV Hmm Sad

WitchesBroomForMyChin · 29/10/2011 18:23

My DD cries whenever she see's the HV, but I don't really like her either.

Nah, I'm exaggerating Imperial. I posted it, after all...

mamalovebird · 29/10/2011 20:22

Magneto thank you - I thought that was just me. That is my life. I am evil mummy form hell and daddy/mil/fil/uncle are all sent from heaven.

Oh withces you'll have a million firsts with your DD, so whilst I understand that it jars you a bit, don't stress too much about it Smile

Unlurked · 29/10/2011 20:25

Just tell everyone she laughs at you all the time, no one will ever know. Or hole yourself up in the house with the baby for as long as it takes her to laugh at you.

I can't remember the first time either of mine laughed. I pretty much feel like The Worst Mother Ever now. Confused

Ghostfillybuster · 29/10/2011 20:26

You would be BU, bar the fact that she is your pfb and my heart goes out to you...

Don't worry - there'll be zillions of other wonderful moments with her, some will be 'firsts' and some wont, and you'll enjoy all of them. And it doesn't matter how much someone else can make her laugh, or if she takes her first steps one day and you're not there, because at the end of it all, you're 'Mummy' - just you, and no-one else, and you're the most special person of all....even if you don't make her laugh right now :)

By the way, I had a sneezing fit in the middle of a nappy change and that was the thing that finally cracked my ds up, many years ago.....Hmm
