To loathe seeing rivers of slimy snot cascading from children's noses?

I did once know someone whose child apparently had a nasal problem which caused this. Yuk. Poor things. But surely this can't be the cause in all children? Why do so many noses go unwiped?

YANBU

My poor nephew seems to always have neglected boogers, and I'm ashamed to say that over the years it's made me noticeably (to me anyway) less huggy with him than I was with my other nieces and nephews.

Dee03 · 29/10/2011 13:14

YRNBU. I can't stand snot....
I work in a pre-school and have to deal with it on a regular basis, it makes me heave Sad

akaemwahahahafrost · 29/10/2011 13:18

YANBU! I have often though this when seeing snotty toddlers at the park. My dc never had snotty noses, honestly the didn't! They were wiped and noses blown at the first sign, certainly never got a chance to dry ! Horrible for child too though surely? Not just horrible for us to look at.

Whatwillwedo · 29/10/2011 13:18

I hate it too, but unfortunately both of my dc were snot monsters, I was constantly wiping their snouts...it didn't make any difference though!

microserf · 29/10/2011 13:19

children with cleft palates can have real problems with this as well.

i do my best to follow my lot about with tissues, but can anyone tell me what to do when the nose is raw from being constantly wiped? (seriously, i'd welcome suggestions here).

akaemwahahahafrost · 29/10/2011 13:19

Yes and you don't want to touch them do you? Poor kids.

akaemwahahahafrost · 29/10/2011 13:19

Wet wipes do not cause raw noses ime.

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 29/10/2011 13:20

YANBU

but all I asked for, of my unborn child, was that he not be one of those DCs.

well, he was one. From 18months to 3YO, green snot all the time, wretched child. You'd wipe it, and there'd be more.

And Constance, wipe his nose yourself, FGS!

DrSeuss · 29/10/2011 13:21

YADNBU. Wipe the kid's nose for God's sake! How hard is it?

Iggly · 29/10/2011 13:21

Yabu

Wet wipes do cause red raw noses IME.

What you can do is give the nose a good clean then smear in Vaseline. Makes it easier to clean and no crust Grin

cookielove · 29/10/2011 13:22

Vaseline on nose and upper lip area can be good to prevent raw noses!!

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 29/10/2011 13:22

microserf, I use wet wipes on the baby, and I did spend out on those balm tissues for DS and they did make a difference. He wouldn't let me put any cream on him, so I used to slick lansinoh under his nose when he was asleep [hgrin]

ConstanceTenchOfZombies · 29/10/2011 13:24

I did a few times Murder in the "oh let me get that one for you" sort of way, but soon got royally slapped down by SIL for it Blush

microserf · 29/10/2011 13:24

thanks, appreciate the tips. ds is miserable when i try to remove his snot crust when he wakes up from his nap!

Thzumbazombiewitch · 29/10/2011 13:24

YANBU - but i can say categorically that those rivers of snot can appear in milliseconds. I am amazed by them! DS isn't particularly snotty, and I have ishoos with it so when he does have a cold I keep on top of the nose-wiping thing - but I can turn around and suddenly there's a green slug hanging out of one nostril!

Disgusting.

I use aloe vera treated tissues - that stops the red rawness rather effectively - I've been very impressed with them!

MrBloomsNursery · 29/10/2011 13:25

Well I don't know...My DD went through a stage of having a snotty nose. No amount of wiping would get rid of it - especially when she didn't understand what "blooooowww" meant. Then she went through a stage of sucking in through her nose, as she thought that was blowing out...It's very hard.

When they get older and they understand it's easier to keep their noses clean and you can teach them to wipe themselves.

I think YABU. Although outside the house, I would constantly strive to keep her nose clean so she didn't look unkempt and neglected Grin.

ConstanceTenchOfZombies · 29/10/2011 13:27

Yes, the balm tissues are really good.

BTW, when do they learn to actually blow their noses rather than just wipe?

Thzumbazombiewitch · 29/10/2011 13:29

DS is 3.11 and I still can't get him to blow his nose above one in ten times of asking. He just blows through his lips. I've tried demonstrating, explaining, holding my hand over his mouth, pinching his nose closed (not while he's snotty!) so he can feel the pressure - it just doesn't seem to get through to him.
But he can get the crunchy bits out by himself now, which is a bonus.Grin

MrBloomsNursery · 29/10/2011 13:30

My daughter began blowing her nose when she was about 2.5 years.

purplewerepidj · 29/10/2011 13:35

YANBU, ndn's toddlers always seem to have a crust of snot, yoghurt and general stickiness to them. However, I have (privately held) Opinions about my ndn's and their parenting...

Jacanne · 29/10/2011 13:35

I feel the same way and my dd usually has rivers of snot - I would be wiping her nose all the time to have any chance of keeping up with it - I think it's one of those things you have to accept about small children - that and constantly have snail trails all over your clothes (yes MIL, I too look forward to the time that I am not constantly covered in baby snot - )

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 29/10/2011 13:36

TOP TIP!

get the kid to blow out a birthday cadle with their mouth shut! not attached to cake, obviously, that would be disgusting

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 29/10/2011 13:36

or a candle. either would be good.

Thzumbazombiewitch · 29/10/2011 13:37

ooo - thanks Murder! will give that a go and see if DS can manage it. :)

MurderBloodstabsandgore · 29/10/2011 13:37

yum, thumbwitch. yum yum [hgrin]
