To loathe seeing rivers of slimy snot cascading from children's noses?

I did once know someone whose child apparently had a nasal problem which caused this. Yuk. Poor things. But surely this can't be the cause in all children? Why do so many noses go unwiped?

Constance your SIL sounds special... :)

OhYouBadBadGhostie · 29/10/2011 13:48

I used to ask dd to blow through her trunk like an elephant. Strangely it was quite effective but the poor child was a snot monster - turned out to be allergic rhinitis.

shuffleballchange · 29/10/2011 14:00

You wouldn't want to see my 10 month old DS2 at the moment then, he has silvery lines of snot through his eyebrows, over his cheeks and in his hair. I do keep trying to wipe his nose though as i agree 'snot candles' are vile Grin

nah Ghostie, that wouldn't work with DS - he does the elephant noise with his mouth, he'd just do that. We've tried huffing like a rhino - that didn't work either. He's a peculiar laddy - he does the opposite of what you ask him to, but trying the opposite tack doesn't work either. E.g. "open your mouth" - he closes it. "Close your mouth" - he closes it. ARGH!! Unless I actually want him to close it and then he opens it of course. It's a skill.... or something.

oo, that's reminded me of the incredible yo-yo slug I remember seeing on someone's child once - they'd snort it back up, it would descend again, snort, descend, snort, descend... it was fascinating in a horrible sort of way!

ha ha oh yes, snot bubbles dd has a cold at the moment and is producing a spectacular amount of snot, really lovely lime green colour as well and fabulous snot bubbles!.

dp was taking her out yesterday and actually ended up stopping hte car and getting out to wipe her nose as a huge amount had come out and she was starting to eat it and it made him feel sick!

there is something quite fasinating about it, i hate colds etc but when i have one myself i LOVE those few days where your cold is clearing and you just have to keep blowing your nose and you can get amazing amounts of snot come out, i always revolt my children by exclaiming loudly about how much has come out and asking if they want to see it Grin

colken · 29/10/2011 15:06

If I have a child with a snotty nose in my house (not one of mine - they were always clean), I will wipe it before the mother has even noticed. I will not have muck around my lovely chairs, table, carpet photographs ......

It's the same if they eat a banana without holding it in its skin. Hands everywhere! Ugh!!

marzipananimal · 29/10/2011 15:07

YABU (well YANBU not to like it - it's gross) it doesn't mean the parents aren't wiping the child's nose. We've wiped DS's about 100 times today but it keeps on coming. He often struggles while I'm wiping too so it gets smeared around his face

Ilanthe · 29/10/2011 15:22

My DS can not only blow his own nose at 23mo, but also asks for a tissue at appropriate moments.

I am lucky indeed as I hate snot with a passion.

YANBU to loathe it, YABU to believe to be anyone's fault though. I admit to being a bit judgy about this subject before I had DCs. I try so hard with both DDs, but sometimes it is just constant!

cerealqueen · 29/10/2011 17:17

YABU - I loath seeing it to, but sometimes it is just that - an unstoppable river, you wipe, you turn your back, its back. I know when I've had a bad cold I've called it a 'streaming cold' for the same reason! You do what you can.

Nice to know that even on this somebody is judging you on how quickly you can whip a tissue out.

When did mothers get so judgey on eachother?

oldraver · 29/10/2011 17:39

I cannot stand it. A child ran up to my DS at school jutted his chin out showing off a huge collection of slime from his nose running over his lips

He then wiped it off and ate it

Ilanthe · 29/10/2011 19:36

What can I say Bluddy, I've already got his name down for Oxbridge. Grin

he learnt it at nursery not from me

Woodlands · 29/10/2011 20:08

Since my DS started at nursery three months ago he has had constant rivers of snot. He's only actually been ill enough to need to stay home once (so far, touch wood), but he has a constant sniffle. It's infuriating!

BleedyGhoulzombiez · 29/10/2011 20:09

Who said anything about being judgy? Tsk. Do read my OP properly. Slapped wrist to all those who added a judgemental tone to my OP! Wink

It is gross, and I'm glad to see I'm not alone in thinking this! Have I just been lucky with my two? There was a time when DS had a short-term allergic reaction which turned his nose into Niagara Falls but I never left it hanging there (mmm...yum!) - probably because the sight of it made me feel so ill! I also remember watching someone's little girl eating a sandwich - complete with her own home-grown condiment pouring onto it!
Boakety-boak!

Thzumbaaaaaaaaa!!!! Grin Yes, I've not been around these parts for a while. Life has been so busy and I've been trying to stay in touch with news events, etc. How's life for you and your two? Grin

madmomma · 29/10/2011 20:14

YANBU it's gross, and that's what ultrabalm tissues are for. The worst thing is when they lick it.

madmomma · 29/10/2011 20:15

Grin at Boakety-boak. Are their mums blind!?

MysteriousHamster · 29/10/2011 20:17

My son has a problem with his adenoids that means whenever he has a cold he is always like this! It's not pleasant but as a snotty kid myself (also adenoids), I'm kinda used to it.

We do wipe it at every possible moment, but it reappears pretty damn quick. Horrible when he's trying to kiss you! Bleargh.

scuzy · 29/10/2011 20:20

christ almighty oh to be so perfect. bet you all went around with candle sticks running down your faces when you were younger also.
