To teach my 2 year old to say "fart?"

Exactly that..that is what he says at the moment, so do we.But most of my friends are teaching"pump, trump " etc.Is fart considered a rude word for toddlers?

OP posts:
callmemrs · 28/10/2011 10:13

Trump, pump etc are all rather twee.

Nothing wrong with using the correct terminology. Fart isn't a swear word

HOWEVER I do question why you need to use any vocabulary for it at all, unless your 2 year old has specifically asked what its called! Or do you want to sit around discussing farts in your house? Call it a fart if necessary, but its not a noun or verb I would have thought you specifically need to teach a toddler.

We say 'pop' in this house. In fact, we're just watching the Gruffalo, and when he appeared on th screen, DD 2.4, said 'he made me do a pop' [hgrin]
Don't like fart or bum for kids, don't know why, just don't. It's a pop and a botty (or botty bot bot as DD calls it) here.

TethHearseEnd · 28/10/2011 10:20

I am laughing so hard at the idea of not teaching a small child a word for one of their normal bodily functions, I let one go.

Dd is 5 and has always said pop....occasionally fart but she thinks it's a rude word.

However now she's at school (year 1) she's always telling us you must say bottom as bum is rude, and def not allowed to say fart now Grin.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 28/10/2011 10:24

"Chez 'Pru we say "done a tummy shame" after the crackfox in the Boosh."

Grin
ScroobiousPip · 28/10/2011 10:25

Does no one else break wind anymore? I suddenly feel very old and square. Blush

grinningzombee · 28/10/2011 10:29

Dd (2.6) says fart. However, if she is within earshot of anyone else doing one, she claps her hands over her mouth, grins and states in that loud toddler voice "you farted" and then laughs.

I don't think there's anyhting wrong with the word - got to call it something!

CheerMum · 28/10/2011 10:40

windy-pop? i thought that was a burp?

personally, i don't like the word fart, we use trump (and believe me, in THIS house, it gets used A LOT!!!)

usingapseudonym · 28/10/2011 10:41

I don't like the word "fart" coming from children but we haven't found a better alternative yet. So far its a "noisy" but we use that word for other things too obviously!

I hadn't realised "bum" was considered rude anywhere. I've always said to my daughter "shall we change your bum bum" and she later went on to say "fresh bum" for a new one. oops?!

Velvetbee · 28/10/2011 10:41

Fart is fine surely. Everything else is way too twee. Bit of a class/geographical thing maybe. My posher friends say fart, not so posh say 'fluff', 'bottom burp' etc.
I was brought up to say 'pop' so perhaps I'm aspirational..

Jacanne · 28/10/2011 10:41

We have always said "fart" but, as a word of warning, they don't tend to look so kindly on the word in school so we had to find a new word for her to use as she was quite upset by her friends' reactions to it.

HeidiHole · 28/10/2011 10:58

ooh we werent allowed to say fart! had to be break wind!

spiderpig8 · 28/10/2011 10:59

we say trump but i think 'guff' is fab!!
fart is horrible, i imagine flatulence is the correct terminology if we're getting pedantic.

DogsBeastFiend · 28/10/2011 11:04

I don't like the word and would never encourage my DC to say it but then again, like carpwidow, I fail to see why you need to teach a 2 year old that or any other related word at all.

Lillyofthevalley · 28/10/2011 11:09

I hate the word 'fart', I even inwardly grimace when an adult uses it. It just sounds so crude to me.

Certainly would not let my ds use it, (its 'prump' in our house) but he's not allowed to say 'shut up' or 'idiot' either as I think they sound horrible coming from a childs mouth.

ImperialBlether · 28/10/2011 11:11

Just what DogsBeastFiend said. What's wrong with just saying "Ooops!" and laughing if they do it? It's a horrible word and it sounds common.

jubilee10 · 28/10/2011 11:12

"Some one I know calls them 'windy pops' I shit you not..."

So do we - and we don't say "shit" either.

(or do I know you)

Getdressed · 28/10/2011 11:15

Ha ha. It is windypops in this house. Do you know me ScaredBear? :o

Although tummy shame might be my new fave!

HairyBeaver · 28/10/2011 11:22

We call it "pop off" in our house [hgrin]

ujjayi · 28/10/2011 11:23

Always used to use the term "fart" because I can't bear anything twee. However, I was acutely embarrassed when I heard DCs using the term outside of home - it just sounded vulgar and wrong. As others have said, it's a normal bodily function and children do find it funny and want to make comment. So we changed to "pop" which is far funnier and more accurately descriptive IMO.

Would NOT use prefix "windy" under any circumstances though!

TethHearseEnd · 28/10/2011 11:28

Hilarious! You don't teach your children any word for a perfectly normal bodily function? Really?. So does this extend to burping? Or pooing?

This is really bizarre.
