I had a request to join a group on facebook a few days ago, "say no to the gypsy camp in ".
I ignored it, thinking, "yeah whatever, random facebook scaremongering".

Today, three teenage boys knocked my door with a petition, to stop this (apparently it is real) camp being built near enough on my doorstep.

But I just dont care.

AIBU to not be bothered by this? Or naive?

LMAO Orm [grin[

Will you be there next week? Boys on back of float and Dh dancing somewhere but I am watching, only one I get off this year.

Peachy · 26/10/2011 20:47

Whrecamels they do often own the land,, it's the planning after that thows it

But whilst you own your home there is a system of housing if you need it- and many do, we were home owners once and could end up in LA housing- the council sites are an equivalent of that

Ormirian · 26/10/2011 20:54

Yus I will. Watching from the relative comfort of the old Prontaprint shop on Monmouth Street! With a large glass of something of course. Too long in the tooth to do carnival in the raw Grin

I will look out for your chaps.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 26/10/2011 20:56

Too early to say, Beyond. Why don't you come back here in 6 months and let us know how it's going? Then you can tell us whether or not you were unreasonable Wink Grin

Peachy · 26/10/2011 21:07

Other side of road to me, will be front row of seating (mum and dad getting on)- do wave!

LMAO at too old, do you KNOW how long I ahve to dance for some of them? Poor dh, it's gonna fair kill him, Bridgy Wink

Ormirian · 26/10/2011 21:10

Ooh! I will look out for you then! Might even be able to nip between the carts to say hello.

Tsk! What am saying? 'Nip' between them? If the delays are anything like usual I'll have hours to spare Grin

spiderpig8 · 26/10/2011 21:41

there's no point typing a reply as I know it will be deleted

Peachy · 27/10/2011 09:27

I know Orm, hence a main reason why I don't do bridgy Wink

I remember the four hour one; four hours!. I am Not That Fit that I can charleston for four hours!

needanewname · 27/10/2011 09:40

It really depends on why they are objecting. There is a site proposed nearing to me, the local residents oppose it on access issues. There are another 2 sites similar distance away from me, not heard any opposition from them.

I really would love to hear more
Positive stories though, it would help balance out the bad stories (though not make it any better). Then people could complain about genuine
Anti social beghaviour and not be classed as racist

BeyondLimitsOfTheLivingDead · 27/10/2011 10:53

I've looked into it a bit more, apparently its proposed to be on farm type land which actually isnt even that close to the estate. In fact its in the middle of "nowhere", about midway between my estate, another estate, and the edge of the next town!

This is one of three (I think) proposed locations, the others being close to the city centre! And it seems it WILL be built in one of the three.

If peopel were worried about house prices or being able to sell their house in future I could understand. But as you say that isn't an issue so YANBU. Some sites seem to have absolutely no problems and some do - depends on who is living there. As long as the council are good at dealing with problem neighbours - in case any are a problem - then it shouldn't be an issue.

OldMumsy · 27/10/2011 12:30

Probably naive from my experience, never mind you will find out for yourself.

oohlaalaa · 27/10/2011 14:12

We've got gypsies near us, who keep themselves to themselves, and never caused us any problems. The site is completely hidden away down a track, with woodland around. I think they have been there for at least 30 years (all my life).

Friends of ours, have all sorts of problems with illegal gypsy site near them.

Congratulations to your council for providing a site. Hopefully the children will get to school and develop a sense of belonging if they are able to have a quasi permanent address.

Nice wide swipe with the brush there...

HoorahHenrietta · 27/10/2011 20:35

Or some realism. Beats being an apologist. Gypsies are very open and PROUD about keeping their culture alive amongst them; they are very forthcoming about keeping out of mainstream society. It isn't some vicious rumour I've just started that will horrify the church elders.

Plenty of generalisations there, Hoorah. Do you know them all and what they want out of life?

startail · 27/10/2011 21:14

We have various small camps round here that seem to cause no trouble.
The nicest friend DS1 ever had was a girl who's family lived in a pony caravan. Solo travellers in winter working on
The fruit farm and with a group doing craft in the summer.

HoorahHenrietta · 27/10/2011 21:59

Yes Cereal. I know everything.

bubbles4 · 27/10/2011 22:17

HoorahHenrietta, you have actually shown that you know nothing about Romany gypsies and their culture.
