To think Strictly is getting too sexy for Sat teatime?

Following on (sort of) from the Facebook thread, what are your views on this?

We all watch Strictly in this house, however I've noticed in the past year or two it's becoming quite overly sexy and I'm starting to wonder if it's suitable viewing for my dds (10, 8 and 4).

I don't know if anyone saw Holly Valance last week - she was wearing a revealing black outfit with black bra and she was in a cage at the start of the dance.

I know I'm old-fashioned and I accept that but I do try to monitor what is and isn't suitable for my children and I sometimes feel uncomfortable about them watching it. I really want them to hang on their childhood and innocence for as long as possible and whilst I accept that sex is everywhere these days, there is a time and a place for them to know about certain things.

I'll probably be alone on this one I suspect, but hey I did ask!

To be fair it was Broadway week and she was doing Chicago - so she was in the very well known costume for that show and it wasn't a cage, it was prison!

The dancers' costumes are usually incredibly revealing and the dances can be sexy, lots of gyrations and writhing. That's kind of the point isn't it?

CherylWillBounceBack · 20/10/2011 17:26

It's nowhere near sexy enough. The Argentinian version had deliberate - not a wardrobe malfunction -full frontal nudity. I might start watching if ours gets like that.

MrsCarriePooter · 20/10/2011 17:28

Nancy and Anton + full frontal nudity = shudder

GreyRosesAreMyFavourite · 20/10/2011 17:33

Ballroom and Latin dancing is just like that. Go to any of the hundreds of competitions on every week and it'll be the same.
Doesn't bother me (but I WAS a dancer when younger!!! And know loads of the pro dancers).
If my children want to dance there are very strict rules regarding dress and shoes until they are 12. But they are still able to watch others - but not being explicit at all themselves.
Strictly is just normal to me Grin

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 17:51

I am beginning to feel the same as you Dancergirl.

GypsyMoth · 20/10/2011 17:55

Grey speaks the truth!

I grew up in the world of dance as both parents are professionals, did the competitions ( people change in the corridors, there is no shame)and now have own dance school.

My mothers costumes even back in the 80's and 90's left little to the imagination! It's how it is

WipsGlitter · 20/10/2011 17:56

You are viewing it through your own eyes. I doubt your children know what "sexy" means. They just see the pretty girls and the sparkly dresses. As others have said it is the way dancing is supposed to be. Now, Christina Aguleria on X factor last year... Totally different story.

Catsmamma · 20/10/2011 17:58

tis the only reason dh watches it!

I don't think it's that bad though really, no excessive bumping and grinding.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 20/10/2011 17:58

YABU.... You're interpreting an outfit and set as 'sexy' because you are an adult. It will not be what your children are thinking at all.

CailinDana · 20/10/2011 17:59

I agree with WipsGlitter - you're interpreting it as sexy but they won't be - they're too young. They'll just see it as movement.

JamieComeHome · 20/10/2011 18:01

My 11 and 8 year olds (boys) find the outfits "embarrassing", which suggests to me that they are getting "funny feelings" about them

LaWeasel · 20/10/2011 18:02

Yes, it bothers me a bit too.

However, I still iPlayer it the next day for my toddler because she loves dancing around the living room with her dad and really enjoys it... she doesn't know to think they're wearing sexy outfits. Just sparkly ones!

DorisIsTheDarkDestroyer · 20/10/2011 18:07

What MrsCarriePooter said.

not really an issue it's not over the top, the costumes are skimpy but if you took them to the costas there'd probably be as much (if not more) flesh on display.

YABU (and a bit mary whitehouse Wink)

Dancergirl · 20/10/2011 21:16

It's not just the costumes, the judges regularly say sexy when giving their comments.

A year or two ago one of our dds, one of the older two can't remember which asked us what sexy meant... Shock

I'm sure the old Come Dancing was never like this....!

Hardgoing · 20/10/2011 21:25

My dd1 (who is nearly 8) says she doesn't like the costumes for the men when they show their chests, and also when the ladies have no back on their costume and it just looks like a bra. I guess she doesn't see this in any other context, except perhaps the beach and it looks odd to her. I don't think it is harming her to see it though (as we have chatted about how these are dance costumes) and I can always turn it off if I think it inappropriate.

GypsyMoth · 20/10/2011 21:27

Come dancing was just ballroom dancing, what's known as ' modern'

They didn't have much Latin dancing on, and that's the sexy stuff!

GypsyMoth · 20/10/2011 21:28

I agree about the bare chests. I used to love seeing my dad in his tail suit! Was v proud.

Sevenfoldedbloodybodies · 20/10/2011 21:30

yabu
why do people want everything to be made for children.
use the off switch if you don't want them to watch it

Hullygully · 20/10/2011 21:35

It's disgusting.

We don't watch it in opur house. We pray and beat ourselves instead.

gothicangel · 20/10/2011 21:35

i agree its got too "sexy" but holly was amazing doing the tango, and the tango is a very sexual dance anyway,

plus it was from Chicago.

But on the whole it def got more racey

x

CaveMum · 20/10/2011 22:33

If you look at a lot of the costumes they are not as revealing as you first think, with flesh coloured panels rather than actual flesh on display.

I agree with what a lot of the others say, if you went to a competition you'd see exactly the same thing, it's not a tv thing.

halcyondays · 20/10/2011 22:49

Children don't see it as sexy dancing or revealing costumes, they just think it's some people dancing in sparkly clothes. And Strictly isn't that bad, I have no problem at all with my dds who are 5 and 3 seeing it, but I wouldn't want them watching a most of the pop videos that are around now.

ilovesooty · 20/10/2011 22:56

I hope Anton's out before we have to watch him do the rumba.

squeakyfreakytoy · 20/10/2011 22:59

Both my parents were latin dance teachers, so I grew up in the 80's and the costumes were just as revealing then. It is part of the ethos of dance.

Would rather see a bloke baring his chest than a bloke in a ballet tights any day!

edam · 20/10/2011 23:05

I was at a conference last year where Darren and Lilia from Strictly were the after dinner entertainment. Fab but OMG I have NEVER seen a woman wearing so little in public - basically a gauze bodystocking with a bit of embroidery around the tits and where pubic hair would be if dancers didn't wax. Fantastic routine, felt really special to see the performance but I must be getting old because I was Shocked.
