To think Strictly is getting too sexy for Sat teatime?

Following on (sort of) from the Facebook thread, what are your views on this?

We all watch Strictly in this house, however I've noticed in the past year or two it's becoming quite overly sexy and I'm starting to wonder if it's suitable viewing for my dds (10, 8 and 4).

I don't know if anyone saw Holly Valance last week - she was wearing a revealing black outfit with black bra and she was in a cage at the start of the dance.

I know I'm old-fashioned and I accept that but I do try to monitor what is and isn't suitable for my children and I sometimes feel uncomfortable about them watching it. I really want them to hang on their childhood and innocence for as long as possible and whilst I accept that sex is everywhere these days, there is a time and a place for them to know about certain things.

I'll probably be alone on this one I suspect, but hey I did ask!

I agree that the judges seem to say 'sexy' all the time and I don't like it either. I hate the word anyway.

Dancergirl · 21/10/2011 09:08

sevenfolded - not 'everything' is made for children. But I would argue that Strictly IS a family show on at 6pm not 10pm.

Do you agree then it's not suitable for children? Because if so you are agreeing with me and you should have said YANBU lol!

The costumes they wear are dance costumes - as in, they are made by the same companies that Latin / ballroom dancers go to. In fact lots of the pro girls are their own that they had made for shows etc.

SCD reflects what is worn in the Latin / ballroom world.

GypsyMoth · 21/10/2011 12:33

The target audience isn't children though is it? Just because they are up and about doesnt mean everything has to be aimed at them. Parental control is yours you know!

I agree with sevenfold.

Dancergirl · 21/10/2011 13:23

No that's true tiffany but I think it's fair to say it's supposed to be a 'family' show, ie aimed at children AND adults.

I would like to see EITHER no-holds barred sexiness and put it on at 9pm (ie aimed at adults) OR tone the sexiness down and keep it at its current time.

Just my view anyway.

BupcakesandHaunting · 21/10/2011 13:27

It's not remotely sexy.

If you can glean something for the wank-bank out of seeing Edwina Currie being hauled around like a petrified sack of spuds or from Lulu dancing the jive like a demented troll on acid, then you get yer kicks too easily.

I am a lot bit pissed off that Dan Lobb got voted off before I got to see him thrusting to Hot Stuff in too tight trousers and split open shirt.

Proudnscary · 21/10/2011 13:28

It's just dancin' in skimpy dance outfits that have been around forever innit?

It's not really sexy time.

Strictly chill, OP.

Witchofthenorth · 21/10/2011 13:50

Bupcakes......me too! Was looking forward to a bit of Dan Lobb too tight trousers action. Alas, it wasn't meant to be.....perhaps a small note to the daybreak wardrobe department? Hmm

RedOnion · 21/10/2011 13:54

Grin at "glean something for the wank bank".

BupcakesandHaunting · 21/10/2011 14:00

Who the fuck voted him off?! That's what I want to know... I thought he would be a favourite of the key demographic. I'm not even watching now.

ASByatt · 21/10/2011 14:01

We've never watched it before this year, but DD (8) felt so left out the last time it was on (all her friends recreating it at school apparently, and the single topic of conversation) that this time we record it and then she watches it, zooming through all the waffly talking bits, which works well. Interestingly, I walked past as she saw the Holly Valance dance from last week, and DD really didn't like it, she thought that HV looked 'horrible' and it 'wasn't a nice dance'....?!?!?! She whizzed past it.

substantiallycompromised · 21/10/2011 14:14

arf at HullyGully

Actually I sort of agree with you op. Think they need to decide whether they are going for adult or family viewing. Atm it's a muddle of both.

It's a shame there are so few family shows on the tv that you can all watch together and this used to be one of them. But I am wavering now (more owing to comments and innuendo rather than costumes).

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 21/10/2011 14:25

I don't dislike the 'sexy' stuff for moral reasons, but I do object to it on aesthetic grounds. I don't need to see men's chests and women's fake-tit cleavages. It's never a good look. Harry should have worn a white T-shirt last week for the authentic 50s Grease look.

Sorry, that's not a very helpful contribution is it? But no, OP, I don't think YABU. Part of the genius of Strictly is that it's firmly in a tradition of family, slightly cheesy, entertainment, basically innocent if a bit cheeky. In recent series I feel that they've drifted away from that and tried to 'sex it up', with pretty dismal results.

I still watch it religiously though. Grin

GypsyMoth · 21/10/2011 14:37

My biggest gripe is you can't see the feet!!

FancyForgetting · 21/10/2011 14:43

I tend to agree OP, but wasn't sure if it's because I am biased as it feels to me that the ballroom aspect (my favourite) is increasingly taking a back seat - although the dances remain, there always seems a lot of 'faffing about' in them, to quote Len, and the costumes often seem more suited to Latin. I really enjoyed James and Alex last week (apart from his purple tails Shock), because it was just about the dance and that under-stated simplicity made it all the more moving to me.

I wonder if the pro dancers' own costumes are maybe more suited to the stage than TV close-up? Just as sometimes the dancers themselves seem too 'exaggerated' for the small screen to me, especially when they first start - the way that some brilliant stage actors are just too 'OTT' on television/film if they don't modify?

Anyway, YANBU IMO, but I am just an enthusiastic viewer Grin. I really loved (and miss) Lilia, but would also be Shock at seeing her so up-close-and-personal!

FreudianSlipper · 21/10/2011 14:47

no no at all

a lot of dance routines/movements are sexual

we used to copy hot gossip when we were young, their routines (on the kenny evert show) were very naughty but we just thought it was dancing

GypsyMoth · 21/10/2011 15:33

AW my mum used to know Lilia. She was lovely I'm told.

I'd love to see the lot of them try to get to grips with the 'old tyme' style of ballroom dance! No two steps, valetas, glides or proper waltzs in sight!

substantiallycompromised · 21/10/2011 17:47

Oh agree about Lilia - she was my favourite!

GypsyMoth · 22/10/2011 18:54

Is 6.30 teatime?

squeakyfreakytoy · 22/10/2011 18:56

My biggest gripe is you can't see the feet!!

Very good point... I think if you are a dancer yourself, or can dance, you dont even really notice the costume because you are watching the footwork.

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/10/2011 19:01

YANBU

Lordy - just saw far more of the one show lady than I ever wanted to.

Really no need for so much boob on display and there certainly wasn't in earlier series.

I thought I read this week that they'd been told to tone it down a bit.

GypsyMoth · 22/10/2011 19:14

Yes squeaky! I'm from a dancing background.

Just watched the foxtrot and couldn't see much! It's all in the feet. My dad is. Teacher and hates how it's all about the costumes and showmanship.

But guess the public don't want to know about the importance of heels, rise and fall or ball of foot.

yellowkiwi · 22/10/2011 19:20

I've turned off tonight. Don't mind in the least about the costumes or the dances but I cringe every time I hear the word 'sexy'. I only really watch it because it was something we could watch and enjoy as a family. I'm sure we can find something better to do with our Saturday evenings mumsnetting.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 26/10/2011 19:55

I'm sick of the slebs and pros alike harping on about the rumba needing to be 'sexy. It's patently obvious that that's what terrifies most of the slebs about it ? you'd think the pros would realise by now that they needed to change tack to get better rumba performances out of their partners. Couldn't they tell them it's about love, romance etc?

JamieComeHome · 26/10/2011 19:59

I love the dresses, but some of the Latin Ones aren't actually that attractive. I'm thinking Ola (fab as she is) in her bleedin' catsuits......

I too would like to see the feet.

I have a strange crush on Len. Not sexy, but warm and fuzzy. His turn of phrase reminds me of my Grandad
