to not hand in £5 to the local police station?

On the way home from school DD1 (9) found £5 outside the local pub. I told her to keep it. DH thinks she should hand it in to the local police station.

I will honestly tot up the answers and do whatever the majority tell me to do!

BTW, if it was a wallet or purse I would hand it in.

I don't think you should make her give it to a charity. She found it; either let her keep it or hand it in to the police.

My DH did that last year (though with considerably more money - add a couple of zeros!) and we got it back because no-one claimed it.

We did use that as a 'moral lesson' for our DDs but to be honest for a £5 I wouldn't bother! I vote let her choose what to do - if she wants to keep it, so be it, but make the '£20 rule' clear.

OldGreyWassailTest · 19/10/2011 22:25

I am quite appalled at the people who say keep it, the person won't miss it. What about teaching the child a lesson in honesty? I really am quite amazed at the attitudes on here!!

Growlithe · 19/10/2011 22:26

Ha ha fourkids, unfortunately not! Just these daft plastic coins covered in silicone all DDs school are into at the mo. The head as just banned them - thank goodness [hsmile]

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:26

dd found a 2p coin on the way to school? AIBU to have let her keep it?

Some of you will be Shock to know I did!

Get real folks.

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:28

Shocked and amazed that someone found a fiver and kept it???? REALLY??? Hmm

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/10/2011 22:31

tbh i would prob say keep it but spend in a charity shop as only a £5

but

agree that its not teaching the child honestly - and only a £5 could be a huge amount to someone and maybe better to hand into police and then seems would get back in 28days

would people really go to a police station and say theyve lost £5

saintmerryweather · 19/10/2011 22:33

I found £20 in the asda cash machine that someone had obviously walked off and left - was I BU to hand it in to the security guard? I think not! I'm quite :O that people would steal as much as £30, cause it IS stealing when you take it from the cash machine

Bue · 19/10/2011 22:38

This idea of handing it in being 'the right thing to do' is ridiculous. Is it also the right thing to do to hand in a two pound coin? In our society no adult would hand in five quid, so why on earth should a child? 9 is plenty old enough to understand the difference between a few quid and someone's wallet.

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:44

Can you imagine the chaos at the police station if everyone who found a £2/ £5/ £10 or even £20 went there to hand them in??
YABRidiculous!

susiedaisy · 19/10/2011 22:45

bue I agree.

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:45

(cash machine fines exepted as they should be taken into the bank!)

acrunchieandacupoftea · 19/10/2011 22:45

I think if it was YOU then keep it. But you should teach your child to do the right thing, and the police will probably say thank you and she will have had a positive interaction with the police. That's a good experience I think.

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:45

finds

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 22:46

What if your child SAW you find the £5?

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 19/10/2011 22:51

Keep it

It's a fiver, outside a pub.

Money in a cash machine or a wallet is entirely different.

Growlithe · 19/10/2011 23:05

Another good lesson, when you are a grown up, watch your money when leaving pubs!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/10/2011 23:43

I would have handed it in at the police station. Ds3 found a tenner once, and we handed it in - a month later, he got it back because no-one had claimed it. I thought this was a good lesson for him to learn.

When I was a student, I managed to leave a tenner in a cash machine - and believe me, as a student, that was a lot of money. The woman who was next at the machine took it into the bank, who checked the machine, worked out it was mine, and credited it back to my account. I had no way of contacting this woman to thank her, but I was so grateful to her. It would really sadden me to know that there are people who'd keep that, because it isn't that much money.

And keeping £50 you found in the cash machine?? That is theft, pure and simple. Even if you couldn't go straight into the bank, you could have gone into the bank (probably even another branch of the same bank) and told them when you found the money, and in which cash machine, and it could have gone back to its rightful owner. I would not be able to sleep at night if I knew I had that much of someone else's money. You should be ashamed.

I would hand it in. It's the right thing to do. What if someone couldn't afford to have lost that £5? If it isn't claimed your DD will get it back.

porcamiseria · 20/10/2011 08:48

Oh FFS its a fiver

spend it, buy some crack :-)

MonaLotte · 20/10/2011 08:50

I would hand it in too as it sets a good example.

Angel786 · 20/10/2011 08:59

Oh sdtg relax. I sleep just fine at night.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/10/2011 10:56

How sad.

MollyTheMole · 20/10/2011 11:06

Angel786 · 20/10/2011 11:07
