to not hand in £5 to the local police station?

On the way home from school DD1 (9) found £5 outside the local pub. I told her to keep it. DH thinks she should hand it in to the local police station.

I will honestly tot up the answers and do whatever the majority tell me to do!

BTW, if it was a wallet or purse I would hand it in.

We recently found a small key holder with a door key and Tesco clubcard and & £20 in it, we took it to the police knowing the owner could be traced from the clubcard. The owners had reported it missing and were kind enough to give my DS(9) a reward of £5, it taught him a good lesson. In your case I would hand it in to the police if it is not claimed within so many days it becomes yours anyway and you could then keep it or give it to charity.

LadyEvilEyes · 19/10/2011 20:53

Keep it of course.
A waste of police time to hand it in.

Collision · 19/10/2011 20:54

Keep it.

Am not sure I would hand in less than £30.

Angel786 · 19/10/2011 20:56

Yanbu. :I a friend found fifty quid in a cash machine, kept half and gave half to charity, but a fiver, just pocket it Blush

MrBloomsNursery · 19/10/2011 20:56

Who walks into a police station looking for £5? Hahahaha. My SIL lost £20 the other day and never thought about going to the police station. Let her keep it.

thecatatemygymsuit · 19/10/2011 20:58

Confused keep it, fgs. Anyone who says otherwise is lying!

grumplestilskin · 19/10/2011 20:58

keep it! I'ld never go to the police station looking for a lost £5 - I'd just kick myself for the rest of the day! so if it was mine I'ld say let her enjoy it!

thecatatemygymsuit

Me too.

maresedotes · 19/10/2011 21:00

Thank you very much for your responses. A rough tot up is 6 = charity (I like the idea of spending it in a charity shop), 6 = police, 1 = keep a bit and then charity and 13 = keep it.

Will look in morning and then go with majority.

Thank you!

Angel786 i A friend also found £20 in a cash machine, she stood around for a while for someone to come back then kept it.

ImpYCelyn · 19/10/2011 21:04

Keep it, it's not worth the time it'll take the place to take your details and sort out returning it to you when it's unclaimed.

Lost money goes around and comes around. She'll lose a fiver at least at some point in her life.

ImpYCelyn · 19/10/2011 21:05

For goodness sake ^ place police

DressDownFriday · 19/10/2011 21:07

Keep it.

Let her buy what she wants with it.

That IS theft - that would have been tracable ie the last person who used the machine left it in the tray .... might have been someones last 50 quid.

I've done that before, walked away with out the money - turned round and gone back and some scumbag has thieved the money. And I would have been in sight. Morally bankrupt scum.

Floggingmolly · 19/10/2011 21:11

The money in the cash machine could surely have been traced by the bank? They'd know by the time it was found whose account was last used. That should definitely been handed in.

Bue · 19/10/2011 21:12

I'm sorry but the idea of handing in a fiver to a police station or someone going in to report it missing has me in absolute stitches! I understand that because there's a child involved you want to teach honesty. etc. but that's absurd. A bank note on the ground is truly a case of finders-keepers.

And I find it quite hard to believe this might be someone's hard-earned pocket money considering it was found outside a pub :)

Floggingmolly · 19/10/2011 21:12

Ah, cross posted.

MercyDulbottle · 19/10/2011 21:13

erm, money found in a cash machine should be handed in at the bank, they can tell who it belongs to because the card details are logged when the card is used. dh has had money returned to him that way. I have had it nicked. there is also cctv at cash machines which will film you helping yourself to it.

agree to keeping a found fiver, though.

MsTownmouse · 19/10/2011 21:17

I would make her hand it in.

I get the point about it is only £5 and who is going to claim it but I think it will teach her to be honest. I have gone into a bank when I founf £20 in the cashpoint from the person before and given it back.

  1. It is the honest and right thing to do.
  1. Frankly for £5 do you want her to learn a lesson that is whatever you find you keep.

Am sure I will be disagreed with here but I would encourage her at 9 to do the right thing.

(and I know I am in the minority)

usualsuspect · 19/10/2011 21:19

I would keep it

onefatcat · 19/10/2011 21:25

Keep keep keep!

The police would look at you as if you had gone mad if you handed it in- probably tell you to stop wasting police time!

There really are some complete and utter pc gone mads on mumsnet- probably the same people that think driving across an empty carpark is is a terrible rule to break.

upahill · 19/10/2011 21:25

It would cost me best part of a fiver to drive to the police staion and back to hand it in!!

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 19/10/2011 21:25

Keep it. Im very keen on honesty but i dont think anyone would look for under £30. And I don't think that choosing to spend it on a charity donation is morally any different to choosing to spend it on something else. You're still spending it. Let her use it for what she likes.

hauntmenow · 19/10/2011 21:30

Hand it in. She'll get it back in four weeks. You're setting a bad example otherwise.

thecatatemygymsuit · 19/10/2011 21:31

I would buy fags with it (pack of ten, obv)
