To have let DS 3 wee in the street?

Was at the shops with DS today, he really needed a wee and both shops we asked wouldn't let us use their toilet because of health and safety. The only cafe I couldn't get my buggy with sleeping DS2 in so I took him around a corner and let him wee against a wall beofr ehe wet himself. I recieved a couple of dirty looks, was IBU?

duvetday compleatly agree with the dog comment!!!

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 18/10/2011 22:25

YANBU - not at all. He's only little, anyone that objects clearly has their own issues that need dealing with!

shushpenfold · 18/10/2011 22:28

My dd1's habit of being desperate for the loo and having to go in the drain between parked cars (swinging gently between her mothers arms!) was the running joke at my dc's first school.....ds could hold on, dd2 could hold on but dd1 - nope. She's always had a bladder the size of a small pea and is still not great at 9yrs old. Having said that - neither am I! Don't worry...you'll soon be like me, grinning widely at all parents with little tiddlers!

MamaMaiasaura · 18/10/2011 22:31

YaNbu - had to do this with my ds's too. When u have to go, u have to go at that age. And agree, anyone who objects clearly have issues. Dogs piss against everything and people don't tend to have issue, why on earth when a tot needs to go would they have issue?

Fifis25StottieCakes · 18/10/2011 22:34

YANBU, i do it with dd 3 if she gets caught short, what can you do if theres no toilets and they cant wait.

Daisy1986 · 18/10/2011 22:37

Nope YANBU, I bet those people who gave you filthy looks are the ones that let dogs poo all over the street and don't clear it up. By Saturday night they'll probably be grown men/women doing the same or throwing up, a young child doing it isn't a problem

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/10/2011 22:38

Yanbu, we had to let DS doe this a few times, usually in a bush or hedge (not in someone's garden, but maybe in car parks etc). We used to make sure it was somewhere where no one would have to walk in it. He outgrew the habit. Never had to do it with DD, she has a bladder of steel, which I am quite envious of.

Kaekae · 18/10/2011 22:40

YANBU...I think it's cruel making them hold it and causing them pain. I agree with the dog comments too!

shaz298 · 18/10/2011 22:41

YANBU, but having a boy makes life much easier. I also have DS. He has SN and has problems with his bladder and can't hold on. I always take a bottle when we go out ( oasis ones are good - wide neck) and he can pee in that. Still may have to do it in public but no-one can say we are fouling the streets!!

I have just bought this (www.amazon.co.uk/Uriwell-Childrens-Happy-Pee/dp/B002NWDI70)

Health and flippin safety Angry
It depends on who you speak to on the day.
There was one shop in town that let me be violently sick in their loo (hyperemisis with DD) but then refused to let DD pee.
I had to take her to a cafe near by. It was BOGGIN' I would have been as well letting her pee in the street ( I held her over it rather than let her wee bum touch anything near it).
I couldn't believe they refused me, I practically begged and nada. She was 2 FGS!

I did get cross one day when I saw a boy of at least 9-10 pee outside a shop when I know that they have a loo that they let their customers use.
The mother clearly didn't ask, just sent him outside. Though, in fairness, she did direct him to the drain.

minimisschief · 18/10/2011 23:13

duvetday has pretty much summed it up

EdithWeston · 18/10/2011 23:16

YANBU - but I think it would have been better done down a drain, rather than against the wall (less smell if it doesn't rain for a while).

Girls you have to hold out over the drain (clothes down to ankles, fold the child in half (IYSWIM) and point it away from your own ankles).

Then just cross your fingers that the child doesn't decide it's a really cool way to wee and demand it on every single trip out the next three weeks!

HipHopOpotomus · 18/10/2011 23:21

I sit dd on the edge of the curb - legs stretched out, it's quite discrete and she stays dry. Nearly 4 she does seem to have a rather weak bladder, so despite insisting she takes a pee before we go anywhere she is often caught short.

SucksToBeMe · 18/10/2011 23:34

Op, you have managed not to offend anybody!! You do in fact appear to be very very reasonable!!

My DS has the odd al fresco wee too Wink

CointreauVersial · 18/10/2011 23:40

YANBU. He's 3!

Have held DD1 over many a drain.

SurprisEs · 18/10/2011 23:43

OP YANBU. I've Had to let DD we against a bush or in an alley way a few times. And it's damn hard with girls!

Health and safety has replaced kindness and common sence! I'm aware it's not the most hygienic thing to do, but it's better then an accident in the middle of a shop floor and wet smelly shoes.

dramatrauma · 18/10/2011 23:48

Anyone under 5 can pee pretty much wherever. I thought that was a law. If you hadn't used the wall, it would have a bus seat or a shopfloor that got it!

SurprisEs · 18/10/2011 23:57

Confession. I once had to pee behind a bush at the age of 20. Was 8 months pregnant at the time.
SIL had her baby but me and DH ha ran out of money so couldn't afford the travel. I HAD to see that baby, don't ask me why, but I HAD to. So I decided that me and DH would walk there. 7 miles.
Half way there I needed to wee. It was an industrial estate and that particular section was more like a field than anything so I went. Whilst doing the wee DH shouts "there's a car coming, hurry up!". So without thinking I pulled my knickers up without stopping to wee. Blush

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 00:04

Confession - i once was so drunk i ran in out the taxi yanking at my pants only to wee on the toilet seat that was still down. I was so drunk i staggered to the settee and fell asleep with my pissy pants still round my thighs and a puddle on the bathroom floor

catinthestripyhat · 19/10/2011 07:16

I once made my son go in a fruitshoot bottle in the changing rooms in New Look because he was desperate!!

ghoulionine · 19/10/2011 07:22

I think at that age it still ok, although not very pleasant for child in this cold weather!

I am wondering though why some places have toilets they refuse to let people use for "health and safety reasons" are they so dirty that they are a health hazard for users? There is a coffee shop in my village who does that too ,they are happy to sell you drinks (at a high cost) but will not let you use the toiletShock! I have not gone back there a second time as it is ridiculus IMHO.

LoveInAColdGrave · 19/10/2011 07:39

Hmmm. You were BVU if it was someone's garden wall. We have a terrible problem with people (which have included a mother letting toddler wee) by our gate, which is under a covered archway. It stinks and is disgusting - we have to hose it down as it's covered so the rain washes it away. It's horrible and is contributing to me starting to think about moving.

But if a random alley, then just about ok - although straight down a drain would have been better.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 19/10/2011 07:55

Agree that down a drain is more considerate. But I end up doing this quite often with my 3 year old.

pigletmania · 19/10/2011 12:56

Love no different to a dog peeing near your gate are you going to stop them? The rain will soon cone and wash it away. It's very difficult fir a young child simtimes to hold it until they find a toilet. If the gave to go they have to go. Just try and do it discretelt
