Going to school, parents all dressed up in warm clothes, coats etc but their children are just in a school fleece. Sorry but it's bloody cold in the mornings and the wind blows right across the playground from the fields so it feels even colder, it's not as if you have to pay a lot for a warm coat nowadays (for £16 I got a bundle with warm coat, 2 shirts and trousers). It really makes my blood boil to see these kids all hunched up and cold. So maybe they don't want one leaving the house, getting into the car etc but they still go out playtimes and lunchtimes. My children don't always want to wear one but I insist and usually they are glad they have them once we get out. Rant over, thank you.

Its October. My DS goes out in a shirt, jumper and blazer. He comes home with his jumper in is bag. Most kids don't like being "mummified". Grin

Twattingcuntybollocks · 18/10/2011 12:29

Well I can see where you are coming from, but as a mother to an almost 4yo DD who does not feel the cold I think YABU (a bit Grin I like it here on the fence Grin)
I struggle to get DD1 to wear a cardigan/jumper let alone a coat to school, I think she take after me in that I too don't feel the cold much.

DD2 on the other hand would wear a jumper, cardi and coat on what I would class as a warm day, she feels it so much more.

Hungrydragon · 18/10/2011 12:29

yabu
ds is wearing a light jacket today. the school inside is boiling and a proper coat would be too hot to run around in.

oh get me ,

I made a parenting judgement for my child having listened to him, quite possibly the parents of inadequately coated to your satisfaction children at your dc's school did too Grin

Bucharest · 18/10/2011 12:30

You do know you are more likely to get sick from being swaddled in clothes than not?

And that most children's base temperatures (or whatever it is, the fact of how hot/cold they feel) is higher than adults? (ie I am frozz, chilled to the bone and dd is sweating)

And that if other people's children not wearing coats is all you have to get gobby about you lead a pretty charmed life?

MadameCastafiore · 18/10/2011 12:31

DD has left her new coat at school and I am not buying her another one - they have to have someone unlcok lost property apparently and they couldn't do it this mornig (and in secondary school no one wears coats apparently!).

DS left his coat at school too - his in between coat - and wouldn't wear the ski jacket I have bought him to wear whan it is really cold.

So what t do?????

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 18/10/2011 12:31

Is the OP being so unreasonable if it's raining and/or due to rain?
Is it fair for a child to sit in wet clothes all day?

pallymama · 18/10/2011 12:31

YABU.
If it really makes your blood boil, just stand a bit closer to them and they'll be plenty warm. Grin

Have to admit I saw some girls running round the playground earlier in summer dresses and light jumpers and that made me feel cold myself. However, I doubt they were worried they certainly looked happy enough.

DD is 5 so young enough to be made to wear a coat but I suspect it gets harder as they get older

HalfSpamHalfBrisket · 18/10/2011 12:32

sorry should not have been and/or, just or.

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 18/10/2011 12:32

I didn't start liking coats until I hit 24/5. As a child I would strip off socks, tights, gloves, scarves and coats. Unless there was snow on the ground I wasn't interested. I seem to have passed this on. I make sure the small ones have thermal vests and leggings on under their clothes. The older ones, meh. I'm sure they'll tell me if anything goes numb and falls off.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 18/10/2011 12:33

If they have walked (or run) to school they might be hot anyway. I set off with my coat on and then take it off as get too warm when moving.

Wallace · 18/10/2011 12:33

My ds2 is playing outside in a T-shirt. It is freezing here - snow on the hills Shock

AKMD · 18/10/2011 12:35

I made my 20mo DS donate his coat to Oxfam. He refuses to admit that he's cold and says that he feels the warmth of the love in his heart. Bless him.

Sniggers.

YANBU.

ouryve · 18/10/2011 12:36

HalfSpam - most schools wouldn't have the kids playing outside in the pouring rain.

harassedandherbug · 18/10/2011 12:38

My dd is 5 and one of those naturally hot people that never feels the cold. She's taken her coat because they have to this term, but I doubt it'll get worn.

My boys are old enough to have left home, but as teenagers coats were bought and if they didn't wear them and got cold then tough! Mind you the reason the wouldn't take a coat to school was because there was nowhere to leave them (no lockers) so they would have had to carry them around all day.

I was more worried about the kids being sent to school in full winter uniform, including woolly tights and thick anoraks, when it was boiling the other week.

Kidsandpets · 18/10/2011 12:38

My 6 yr old chose to go to school in his short sleeve shirt and shorts today. His jumper and raincoat were in his bag and he could have put them on if he was cold. He just doesn't feel the cold.

QuintessentialShadyHallows · 18/10/2011 12:38

Mine wear merino wool base layers under uniform......

SusanneLinder · 18/10/2011 12:38

Just trying to work out what on earth it's got to do with the OP, whether other people's kids were coats or not.Hmm

If it's affecting your life that much, you need to calm down :)

mrsruffallo · 18/10/2011 12:38

My son is five and since he was a toddler he has refused to wear a coat. This morning I insisted he put it on before he left the house as it was very cold. Once we got outside he declared that I was mistaken and that it was actually warm and the coat was off within minutes.
Funnily enough, he rarely catches a cold, so please don't get all huffy on his account.

AKMD · 18/10/2011 12:40

Yes! Someone said it! MN bingo WINNER!

aldiwhore · 18/10/2011 12:40

Our school won't let kids out when its raining or snowing. I think children SHOULD go outside in the snow and rain (though the freezing ice of last year was an exception I suppose) so long as they have right attire.

Cold is relative though, I am feeling the cold more as I get older and since I've discovered a love of knitwear. When I was younger I simply didn't feel it, and never got ill (unless WET and freezing).

My kids take their coats to school, but rarely wear them. My 4 yr old takes his off the second he's out of the car.

wigglesrock · 18/10/2011 12:40

My almost 4 year old appears to run at a higher temperature than most. She wears a coat if its really cold but otherwise nope - she's a real sweaty betty. Her 6 year old sister would wear her coat all day if you let her and if she wears it inside, she just won't get the benefit Grin

piprabbit · 18/10/2011 12:42

It's hard at the moment. The mornings are so cold, but by lunchtime it is quite pleasant with the sun out.
DD has a lovely winter coat - but complains that it is too warm for lunchtime and afternoon playtimes (I always have to carry it home).

We've compromised and she is wearing a gillet in the mornings. But I keep pushing the winter coat as a better option.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern · 18/10/2011 12:43

Most kids don't feel the cold anywhere near as much as adults and if they do, they can put their coats on - I'd hate to be made to wear a coat when I wasn't cold, just because someone else was.

The only thing I don't like to see is babies/children in pushchairs inadequately dressed because they can't do anything to keep warm (like running around).
