to be sick of all the grooming?

Disclaimer; I'm not actually that stylish or well groomed, however
I am sick of the shaving, plucking, waxing, trimming, moisturising, manicures, pedicures. I've been doing it for 25 years, and I'm tired of it
I am also sick of the haircuts, highlights, blowdrying every bloody day. Trying to find shampoo and mousse that give my hair some kind of volume.
I got my haircut short recently so it would be easier, and it's already outgrown the style
I'm sick of trying to find comfortable clothes that are flattering, comfortable shoes that are stylish
I currently have no mascara and no foundation, need a haircut and highlights
and I have no money to buy any of the above

would I be unreasonable just to let it all go to pot
who would care, who would notice?!

I've just read this through and it does sound like I am trendy and stylish, I can assure you that I am not.
I spend all Summer in flipflops, I have very fine greasy hair, so I have to wash and blowdry everyday
I don't usually wear makeup, just usually mascara, but I had a job interview and went out on Sat and I had no foundation

Don't do it then

Does someone have a gun to your head ?

witchyhills · 18/10/2011 12:14

If I don't do it, I feel like a slob, I look like a slob.
I need every bit of help I can!

shampoo for blondes doesn't seem to work for the fine greasy hair, just makes it flat

I do that greatdomestic. But not with the cheapest of the cheap lotion. Ok.. I do it with Keihls ..Blush I sooo can't afford it!

Ok, If you were on a desert island and could take only one cosmetic/grooming product with you, what would it be? (Assuming you would take anything.)

screamingbohemian · 18/10/2011 12:17

ah lesley nice tip on the conditioner, ta!

I moved to France recently and you would not believe how much grooming I did that first week! ooh la la, I did feel a beast among the beauties

But it's been inspiring actually, I find women here concentrate on the basics good skin and hair and minimise the rest of it.

Sometimes it's not even the amount of time you have to spend, it's the sheer number of things you get used to doing.

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:19

I have a mobile beautican who comes to my house about once every 6 weeks.
She starts work at 7.30 and is willing to work up to 9.00pm so depending on what time I'm in work determines if I have a morning or evening slot and I get everything done in one hit.
I get my eyelashes permed every 3 months and tinted every 6 weeks so I am not messing about with mascara and my eyelashes look groomed.
She also does my waxing so that is out of the way, no body hair worries for a couple of months.
Pedicure and manicure are done. It is much cheaper than a salon and becasuse I use her a lot she is quite accomadating.

Every 9 months / year a have a make up lesson at Bobbi Brown. They show new trends and how to do a quick easy but effective routine.

Once you are organised grooming isn't a big deal but can make one feel much better than if they didn't .

grubly · 18/10/2011 12:24

get a good hair cut and a good bra and let the rest go. people will think your hairy legs are ironic.

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:30

Let everything go!!1 Shock No chance!!!

I will go to my grave craddling my Bobbi Brown Luminous Moisturizing Foundation

witchyhills · 18/10/2011 12:31

eyelashes permed?!! seriously? or is that a typo?

OP posts:
AnyPhantomFucker · 18/10/2011 12:32

upahill what will it say as your epitaph ?

here lies upahill, she had good skin

Grin
AnyPhantomFucker · 18/10/2011 12:33

here lies upahill, she had no body hair worries

Morloth · 18/10/2011 12:35

So don't do it.

I don't and I look just fine, I am clean and tidy, I wear my hair long enough for a pony tail.

Each morning I brush my hair and put in pony, then I have a shower, whack on some deodorant and if I am not gymming I put some moisturiser/sun screen on.

That's it.

I look good.

No shaving/plucking/dying blah blah, that's a mug's game.

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:35

Grin at Anyphantom!!

Yes I get the lashes permed once every 3 months or so!!! They look great.

Hey I am low maintence once everything is done!!!

I forgot to mention I get my lip and chin threaded but I just call in at a salon on spec on my way home from wherever and get it done as needed.

minipie · 18/10/2011 12:39

Focus on one or two things that are really important to you, and forget the rest.

For example, stick with the daily wash and blow dry if you feel your hair looks dreadful otherwise. But forget about everything else. Or at least only do it once a month or so.

What does it really matter if your nails and cuticles look a bit raggedy? If your heels have hard skin? If your legs and armpits and bikini line are a bit furry? Deal with these things once a month and they will not be too bad.

SardineQueen · 18/10/2011 12:40

I have stopped doing loads of stuff in the last few years and actually it makes very little difference to me and I'm sure nobody else really notices and if they do they don't care!

Big plus is that when you do make an effort for a night out or whatever everyone goes you look wonderful Grin

SardineQueen · 18/10/2011 12:41

I used to get my eyelashes permed and dyed.

Upahill is not imagining things Grin

BettyCash · 18/10/2011 12:42

Totally agree with minipie - what do you want to do for YOURSELF? Hair wash, long hot baths, clipping nails and toenails and keeping your fringe out of your eyes? Don't do more than you want to.

Morloth · 18/10/2011 12:44

Hoe the tuck do you perk an eyelash? Are there teeny little rollers?

Why would you work an eyelash?

People do weird shit.

Morloth · 18/10/2011 12:45

Oh dear, I am on my phone.

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:45

I wouldn't ignore hard skin on heels to be honest.

A few years ago my feet were in a right mess and I didn't tackle hard skin on my heels.
The heels split and were so painful.
I ended up on antibiotics. About once a week after a bath or shower I just have a quick exfoliate with a foot file and then put a rich cream on before bed.

I often use a cracked heel cream such as CSS (I think it is ) or a Scholl one.

It's not worth the pain to ignore hard skin.

AnyPhantomFucker · 18/10/2011 12:45

here lies upahill, she had curly eyelashes

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:47

Moreloth -- Yes it is a tiny roller!!

It really open up the eyelashes and makes them look nice. It only takes about 20 mins or something once every 3 months or so. It's not a big deal but I like it

upahill · 18/10/2011 12:47

Anyphantom.......... and no hard skin on her feet!!! Grin

screamingbohemian · 18/10/2011 12:48

Ow ow ow, yes I've had split heels, it hurts!

You don't need pedicures though, like upahill says, foot cream is your friend.

My Granny was right when she said 'work smart, not hard' when it came to personal grooing, I've yet to meet a more elegant lady.

OP your hair sounds like its an issue you to, and really I don't have the expertise to advise you on that, but I would invest in it as a great cut that suits you is key to slobby yet chic. I'm lucky with mine, but I find when its longer I have more options and am not so reliant on good hair days!

Make up can be cut to a minimum, a half decent all day tinted moisturiser, mascara (in brown, you won't need eye make up to soften it then) and a tinted gloss that you can use on your cheeks.

Plucking, shaving, waxing... meh, its winter, only remove the bits you don't want to be on show, so for me, anything other than the odd chin hair and eyebrow pluck gets left for special ocassions - plus its warm!

Manicures and pedicures... again I only have them for special ocassions, I use clear varnish and keep an emery board and nail file in my bag. Invest in a good quality quick absorbing hand cream.

Comfortable flattering clothes are tricky, I live in jeans and leggings, and at this time of year with my boots (clarkes, flat, gorgeously comfy and not UNtrendy) and my new nice fitting coat it doesn't matter what else I'm wearing, though I've developed a penchant for jumper dresses that can be dressed up or down. To feel more like an outfit I have knitted some nice hats and scarves (which also hide any bad hair days).

I'm not ever going to be a style icon, but I don't look too bad. I keep it simple. I never wear tracky bottoms or shapeless jumpers, or trainers if I'm not going to the gym or staying indoors all day. (I don't care if others do by the way).
