to not really understand the purpose of Playmobile?

I have 2 dc aged 6 and 3 and we have never gone down the whole Playmobile route. My dc both love lego and spend hours building and taking apart their creations only to rebulid something else. I have looked at the Playmobile boxes and they look really lovely though bloody expensive sometimes! I don't get it, is everything ready built in the box and therefore once you have opened the box it is up to dc to play with the items using their imagination (my dc would get fed up after couple weeks) or is it all in pieces and you have to build all the buildings and playmobile people before you can play (therefore am thinking would be really good value for money and could try some as Christmas gifts!). Would just love someone to tell me exactly what it is before I go out and waste money!

So the Dutch children get their presents on December 5th? That is the birthday of my lovely owner, who will be 11 this year. We should get that set to celebrate his birthday! Grin

If we lived in the Netherlands he would have to celebrate his birthday and Christmas on the same day though..........

madmomma · 15/10/2011 00:18

Thanks Incognit. I think I just want to play with it myself.[hsmile]

NormanBatesTheForeman · 15/10/2011 00:25

If your son is 1, he will soon be old enough for Playmobil 123 (suitable for age 18 months up)...... here

madmomma · 15/10/2011 00:28

Ooh thanks Norman. Am v tempted by the noah's ark.

NormanBatesTheForeman · 15/10/2011 00:33

I'm always happy to recommend Playmobil Smile

startail · 15/10/2011 00:41

I don't get it either, I was brought up with Lego, but DD2 loves it.
She's a sociable people person. She gives names and complex lives to her playmobile people. Drives about in their cars, sends them to school, hospital and off camping.
Lego frustrates her, it isn't realistic enough and it takes time to build a house or a car. She just wants to play with the model not build it. If I do make her something it stays made to be played with.
I'm a scientist I'm not very good at people and that kind of role play bores me witless. I love the process of building and refining Lego models, but once they look right and/or work that's it, I'll make something new.

DH is mad about Playmobil, and Lego, and Character Options, and . . . well, I'm just thankful they are small.

He's mighty peeved that the newish Playmobil "lucky dip" bags are either pink or blue with (you guessed it) most of the pink-for-girls bags containing princesses and fairies. The witch and highwaywoman are good though. But why, oh why did Playmobil have to succumb to this stupid seemingly mandatory these days segregation of toys by gender. Argh!

trixymalixy · 15/10/2011 01:16

Where is the OP?

saladsandwich · 15/10/2011 01:18

i love playmobil, ds is 2 and as quite a bit, they are so well made! ds is obsessed with cars but his speech therapist recommended i buy something with people and thats what i got for him.

those playmobil luckydip bags are abit poo, ds picked out the grim reaper the other week, he loves it but thought it was abit odd to have tht as a childs toy? maybe its just me

KRITIQ · 15/10/2011 01:23

Or the hangman then? Try explaining that to a DC!

TBH, I think both Playmobil and Lego are actually marketing their stuff more to adult collectors than to children. They've got the money! :-)

KRITIQ · 15/10/2011 01:23

Sorry, not a hangman - perhaps even more grim, it's an executioner with a big axe.

Going back to the FC conversation, in Austria & Southern Germany (& some other places) they have Krampus on 5th Dec, he (it?) punishes (scares) naughty children!

2anddone · 15/10/2011 08:05

Sorry Trixy, Wow can't believe how many people answered. I sort of get it now dd is 3 and think she would love it but might hold off til her birthday.
Thanks everyone for your answers

Hmm, I have never had playmobil, though we do have a random boat. But, having read this thread I'm convinced my Dcs need some. What would be a good starter kit iyswim?

StuntCubble · 15/10/2011 08:18

Dcs are 6, nearly 5, 2 and 1 if that makes any difference

saladsandwich · 15/10/2011 08:21

this might have been said but the aeroplane is half price in elc at the moment and the local toy master have the farm for £40 (i think)

NormanBatesTheForeman · 15/10/2011 09:52

startail, we Playmobil people in our house also have complex lives, and we all have names. I live in a portakabin with Brian, Len and Ken (all builders), Michael the beach policeman, and Cuthbert the police protection officer (although sometimes he goes off duty and is replaced by Hubert)........

Georgimama · 15/10/2011 10:11

stunt I would just go with whatever your chidren are interested in - there will be playmobil for it. So if they like dinosaurs get a little set of that, pirates, fairies, whatever. DS was given the dinosaur volcano set as a Christmas present and we have added to that, and also bought a few pirates. The pirate take along is good because it's about a tenner and you get 2 priates with accessories, a skeleton that glows in the dark and a tiny little monkey (who is chief culprit of all mischief in this house) plus a little house for them all. Single figures are about £2.50 in the shops.

ragged · 15/10/2011 10:14

DC1 didn't get into Playmobil until he was 7 (yes, SEVEN). Other DC not much bothered. 3yo way too young ime. Diecast toys better for that age.

I'd like our whole family to go for 12th night pressies instead of 25 Dec, but DC not having it (hymph).

NormanBatesTheForeman · 15/10/2011 10:19

Yes Georgi, my owner started off with the fire rescue sets when he was in a major fire engine phase, followed by the building construction sets (which included me!) when he was very much into diggers, etc. He has since branched out with his interests, but it was a good start.......

bruffin · 15/10/2011 10:35

Not one piece of playmobiles has ever crossed my threshhold! Although I did look at buying them the advent calendar once. A bit late now as they are teenagers.

trixymalixy · 15/10/2011 10:39

Sorry 2anddone, given the playmobil love on Mumsnet, I was wondering if you had just posted and sat back to watch us go! Grin

Your kids will love playmobil. Some of the fun of building up like Lego, but then toys that don't fall to bits when playing with them.

2anddone · 15/10/2011 12:26

Didn't realise there was such love on here for Playmobil (thanks for the corrections on the spelling everyone Wink) Now if I was going to start a thread and watch it go it would have been about people parking in parent/child spaces when they shouldn't while running into the supermarket to buy loads of fruit shoot and greggs sausage rolls for their dc dinner!!

That's been done to death though!
