To be appalled by the bad language used on this forum

I know I will probably be shot down as I am a newbie on here but I recently found this site whilst searching for something and found the AIBU threads very interesting. I find it intriguing how different people react to the same situation and it really makes you realise that we are not all the same, and the world is better for it.

What I have found so appalling though is the frequent use of swearing throughout these posts. I have been truly shocked by this as it is a forum used mainly by parents. Is this the example to set children?

There is something about swearing in writing which makes it so much worse than in conversation, although that is not nice either. It seems so much more deliberate in writing.

When did it become acceptable to use such language unnecessarily and excessively just for effect?

Alright Whitehouse, calm down. What everyone else said.

"Mummies don't swear" said the midwife to the labouring woman. "Fuck off" said the labouring woman.

^^ not aimed at anyone - i just felt like saying it.

"The Spirit of Mumsnet" is that Justine's yacht?

Cheeptrickortreat · 07/10/2011 08:51

I know i'm sorry - i just need to go into a forest and have some scream therapy right now Blush

Xenia · 07/10/2011 08:56

I never swear. It's just a sign of a limited vocabulary or inability to control yourself. It says all you want to know about the people who do. They often start to swear when they disagree with your argument but don't have the intellectual abilities to argue a point.

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/10/2011 09:00

The thing that always irritates me with OPs like this is the implication that everyone on MN swears all the time and on every thread. Which is so patently not true.

And it also totally fails to recognise what really is, IMVHO, the true spirit of MN. Such as the current thread about the Christmas appeal, or the heartbreaking threads about blankets for those who have been bereaved. In other words, that we are all decent, human and compassionate people.

So read the rest of the forum before you pass such silly and ridiculous judgements.

A little levity and adult humour is more than justifiable. This is our place, not somewhere where our children take up (yet more) of our time.

See? A whole post with no swear words whatsoever.

Pagwatch · 07/10/2011 09:01

The limited vocabulary argument is so dull and so predictable.

Using swearing as a means of propping up your conversation because you lack the wit to articulate you point otherwise is a sign of limited vocabulary.
Being perfectly capeable of making your point but using fuck because you enjoy how it sounds is not.

I often wonder if those who trot out the limited vocabulary argument do so because they lack the wit to find another.

VajazzleMyBroomstick · 07/10/2011 09:02

Well said BecauseImWorthIt and Maryz bugger off Grin

Xenia · 07/10/2011 09:03

No, we just better with words. If you go to any of my more controversial threads you will find examples of the less bright women who just give up on the argument and end up making some comment about Xenia being and then some swear word and you just think...well round one to me. As long as those who swear know in what low regard they are then held they may of course go forth and prove their deserved position. Free country.

BecauseImWorthIt · 07/10/2011 09:03

Another silly argument. I have a pretty wide vocabulary, with more than enough words to choose from for most occasions or arguments.

But sometimes, a choice swear word is by far the most satisfying.

Pagwatch · 07/10/2011 09:04

Most of us live our lives perfectly able to adjust our language to what is appropriate for the situation. It isn't difficult.

Becaroooo · 07/10/2011 09:09

pissflaps!!!

bugster · 07/10/2011 09:09

I agree with the OP anf xenia shock horror. People usually swear if they don't have any more articulate way to put things. Swearing in front of children is just going to lead to them being foul mouthed and people will judge them for it. When adults swear, even when children aren't present, I just find it really ugly. Don't believe in censorship though.

VajazzleMyBroomstick · 07/10/2011 09:19

Fuck off to work then Lissie and tell your boss he is a cunting nobfucker.

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 07/10/2011 09:24

Wow, no idea what happened there. Am at work now, served 3 customers and grated my knuckles while doing cheese.

And managed not to swear.

See, adaption to the situation.

crazynannawitchbitch · 07/10/2011 09:25

I agree BIWI...it is the humanity and true spirit of Mumsnet, such as the Blanket threads and the support offered to a member recently who had a baby born with some challenging needs that has cemented and confirmed my stance that I am sticking with you guys...and will fuck off all notion of being a part of other (inferior) parenting forums Smile

VajazzleMyBroomstick · 07/10/2011 09:25

yuck. Grated knuckle sandwich. Lissie your discustin.

Blueberties · 07/10/2011 09:26

I agree with quite a bit of what Xenia says but I do swear and I love to swear. It can be so funny and so satisfying.

"Fuck off to work then Lissie and tell your boss he is a cunting nobfucker."

This, for example, is valiant.

LissieLovettsDeliciousPies · 07/10/2011 09:29

In my head I screamed "fucking twatarsess" to the old dear I said "ouch, that stung. Tea and scone is it my love, how's the hip today?"

BatsUpMeNightie · 07/10/2011 09:36

I have a superb and rich vocabulary so the rather sad little argument about lack of such or lack of wit is somewhat redundant.
You'll generally find this point of view spewing forth from the kind of people who wear six pairs of knickers and have toilet roll dollies in their bathrooms. Ignore them. Twats!
