If a garment goes in the washing basket inside out, it is washed inside out and then ironed, if needed inside out and put away inside out.

I will not waste my time putting everything back the right way.

DDs do their own washing. Grin

LineRunner · 02/10/2011 19:18

Nothing needs ironing if shaken out and hung properly after line- or tumble-drying and either nicely folded or hung up.

Only stuff left on the line to dry to cardboard or left lying to crease at the bottom of the tumble drier for hours needs that kind of domestic intensive care.

youarekidding · 02/10/2011 19:18

YANBU and thanks to this thread I'll never spend waste 5 minutes taking the bedding from inside the duvet cover again. Grin

I have got good at not ironing but school shirts/ t shirts are always done as are cotton combats - which I live in!!

swingingcat · 02/10/2011 19:19

I make a point of buying non-iron when we buy school uniform!

Life is too short to waste it ironing!

troisgarcons · 02/10/2011 19:25

I buy non-iron - they look worse than the cheap ones.

ladies, share your secrets with me!

I dont iron anything that doesnt need it - I mean, ssome people iron tea towels Hmm and bed linen Hmm I have one friend who is an iron freak who irons her bras??????? HmmHmm

PureBloodMuggle · 02/10/2011 19:31

I work with someone who says that if you hang it and dry it properly you don't need to iron, and you really can't tell.

You can though with certain things.

I do then if you put it in inside out it stays inside out with DH's stuff - not DSs yet but when they are old and capable of turning it the right way I might

Rolled up socks though are a nothing thing totally, it's hard to get rolled up socks dried, really don't like unrolling worn sock though!

PureBloodMuggle · 02/10/2011 19:32

Hmmm how does a person iron a bra? And for what purpose?

ScarahStratton · 02/10/2011 19:33

Jesus, how big are her bras? Shock

yellowraincoat · 02/10/2011 19:35

So many things simply do not need to be ironed. Shirts, yes, jumpers, no. Some dresses, some trousers, but honestly, in this house, ironing takes about 10 minutes a week.

And we do not look crumpled.

FlyingPirates · 02/10/2011 19:38

TBH, and I am going to get flamed for this!, it takes two seconds, so does it really hurt to do it? Tell them, sure, but it is not worth the grief to get het up over it and when they have to do their own washing, your wise words will come back to them and they will do it! I would rather focus on other more important things than whether their top is inside out or not. Like tidying up after themselves in the kitchen - THAT is a battle worth having! (the difference being it affects other peoples living space)

thederkinsdame · 02/10/2011 19:42

We had an all-time record for ruining of crisply ironed short last week. DS got dressed, had breakfast. Lo, and behold a new shirt was needed because his was covered in raspberry jam. Angry It's banned now on school days. Grin

Dawndonna · 02/10/2011 19:42

Here, if it doesn't make the basket, it doesn't get washed. They're learning.
As for ironing, again, if sleeves are still rolled, they have to sort it.

I do, if I'm using the dryer, fold everything before it goes in. If folded and creases smoothed, cuts the ironing by half.

chelen · 02/10/2011 19:47

Wow, some people actually look at the clothes before they ram them in the washer? I wouldn't know if they were inside out and small child usually helps load washer anyway so miracle if anything gets in, OH hangs it up, OH rescues his shirts and irons them, big child sorts all dry washing and puts away (in random places, sometimes quite funny).

Now I've typed this I can see what's the cause of my mum always looking a bit ashamed when we go to visit.

tradesmansentrance · 02/10/2011 19:50

So relate to this thread. I'm a non-turner of clothes and if socks go in the basket rolled up, they stay wet in the drier and get returned in a soggy ball. Dh has not changed his habits despite 10 years of this and we've reached a status quo about it. He irons his own stuff too and would happily iron mine but I don't like ironed clothes. We deserve each other.

laptoplover · 02/10/2011 19:56

flying pirates.......I don't get any grief over it I just thought about what I was doing when the clothes were being put away.........nobody ever says anything.

I have no bother in the kitchen everybody does their bit but thanks for your concern.

I do unroll the socks though.

BUT

I never match socks up just put them in piles of whose is whose.........

You are supposed to wash stuff and iron it inside out. saves on wear to the outside surface from washing and also from shine marks from ironing.

only exception is creases in trousers and that is done with damp tea towel to prevent shine.

Duvet covers - if you wash them inside out, dry them and iron them inside out, makes it easier to put them back on the duvet. you put your hands inside the duvet cover, grab the top 2 corners of the cover, and sock-puppet style grab the corresponding corners of the duvet then shake cover down over the duvet, final flick and then then do poppers infernal buttons up and voila!

laptoplover · 02/10/2011 20:08

Iron a duvet cover....................mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...........I don't think so!

OP posts:
purpleknittingmum · 02/10/2011 20:11

No, don't iron duvet covers either!

HerHissyness · 02/10/2011 20:12

no, neither do I,(hastens to add) i get them straight out of the machine and hang them over the bannister.

FlyingPirates · 02/10/2011 20:23

Sorry laptoplover - I wasnt saying you had issues in the kitchen! I was just saying that that is what I focus on more! I have no idea what your kitchen is like but I trust you when you say it is fine Grin

iFailedTheTuringTest · 02/10/2011 20:24

I turn everything inside out to wash, it protects the colour and texture of the fabric.

Don't iron. If you hang stuff up then it don't need ironing.

I only iron interview shirts :)

Bogeyface · 02/10/2011 20:28

Am I the only person who doesnt get the DC dressed until AFTER breakfast? And makes them change into a "it doesnt matter" outfit before dinner?

White shirt + Raspberry Jam breakfast = What the ACTUAL FUCK were you thinking?! :o

oneofthosedays · 02/10/2011 20:42

DH's stuff goes in as found be that inside out, sleeves rolled up, undies inside trousers etc then goes back to him dry like that - he does all his own ironing so I couldn't give a stuff if it means it's more creased Grin. I do check pockets though, I refuse to pick bits of tissue off everything, more time efficient to check pockets.

Yes to ironing but only certain things, if it looks ok or will flatten down with folding then it doesn't get done. School skirts and trousers - if hung/folded the right way then no ironing needed (I dry DS's trousers leg to leg along the creases so no need to iron them back in).

Ironing of duvet covers/sheets - what the actual fuck?!! Folded carefully they sort of press themselves and if there's creases, well, there's only going to be more when I sleep/shag DH on them!! Grin And no-one else is going to see them anyway! I do wash them inside out though as they are easier to put on the duvet that way, you kind of just shake the cover down and it's on in a minute or so.

I spend less than and hour a week ironing, I refuse to do more.

Bogeyface · 02/10/2011 20:52

Ironing bed linen never gets done but it is my "lottery win luxury" because when I win (which I will, keep the faith) I will employ a lovely competent person to iron my bedlinen and change it every single day. I do love freshly washed crisp ironed cotton bedlinen but the chances of me ever doing it are less than zero!

YouDoTheMath · 02/10/2011 21:00

The timing of this thread couldn't have been better.

I was hanging out DH's washing today and at least 50% of it was inside out.

It used to just be the case with socks - but now it's pants and tops, too.

He's never complained that I don't correct his socks - am waiting to see if the same rule applies with T-shirts!

Seriously though, the whole process would take me twice as long if I turned them all the right way. I hate this phrase, but life is too short.
