AIBU to not want to teach because it would mean working with other teachers?

Ok, my hard hat is on and I'm ready for the onslaught, but here goes! I had a great career before my DCs came along, I loved working and was good at my job. I worked in a great environment, had really good people working with me and we all got on in and out of work. Fast forward 4 years I have been and will be for the forseeable future a SAHM, I love it and will stay home until my lo goes to school at least. Afterwards I could stay home if I want to but lately I have been thinking about future careers. I wouldn't want to go back to my old role as I would never see my kids! So here's my problem, lots of people have suggested teaching and I would love to make a difference to kids, I think I have a lot to give and I am willing to put in the hard work, but there is one big problem, other teachers! First I should say my DH is a Deputy Head and I have lots of good friends who are teachers and when I tell them my worries they tend to agree! My oh worked abroad so we were in close quarters with the school and I have done voluntary work in a few schools and I have never come across such moaning, b&tchy people in any other setting. On their own all lovely people, get two together it's a nightmare. Seriously teachers talk about work on nights out, at people's parties, in the park, probably bed if they are married. My OH wouldn't but knows not to on pain of death! I know teachers take the p out of kids, parents and anyone else they feel like. Most have never worked out of a school setting so have no idea what the rest of the world are up to. So AIBU to not want to teach because I don't like teachers or should I bite the bullet and hide in the loos at lunchtime?

There are some teachers who are just fab - professional, enthusiastic, empathetic.

Equally, I have come across teachers who make me want to shudder - patronising, bossy know it alls.

But you get a diverse range of people in any sector / random group of people. What a strange thread to start!

When people say 'I don't need to work for the money, I am only doing it to make a difference', I always wonder does this make a person more committed (because they aren't just doing it for the dosh) or does it mean that they have a higher sense of entitlement and lower commitment levels (because they expect people to recognise they are doing it for philanthropic reasons, and they have the ability to walk away when the going gets tough)?

Stealth boasti plus deliberately provocative.... interesting mix.

Feenie · 01/10/2011 17:26

For a first thread, especially. Hmm

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:27

No cup of I was asked a question, ignored it because it was none of their business, was asked again and answered.

What a weird thread

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:28

Not a first thread. First on this name.

Figures - you'd want to namechange to act like such a knob.

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:30

Stop posting if it's so weird

OP posts:
cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:31

Namechanged because not fair on DH

OP posts:
CupOfBrownJoy · 01/10/2011 17:31

Absolutely. If you're going to be a right twat, namechange first

Them's the rules...

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:31

Do people over the age of 15 actually call people knobs anymore?

OP posts:
CupOfBrownJoy · 01/10/2011 17:31

Yeah you think you're DP is moany, bitchy and boring.

I'm not surprised...

Or twats? Because around here it's only the chavs that do?

OP posts:
cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:33

Erm no I don't I think he's lovely, caring, kind and sexy actually.

OP posts:
CupOfBrownJoy · 01/10/2011 17:35

oh I'm always calling people knobs and twats but that's probably because I'm a teacher and I'm a right bitchy, moany, boring cow...

Can't help myself Sad

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:35

True

OP posts:
BerylStreep · 01/10/2011 17:36

Well I regularly call my boss a knob & a twat (only when speaking to DH) and I not a chav, or under 15. Grin

He must also be extremely patient, and tolerant of those with Peter Pan syndrome.

'Oh the cleverness of me!'

Yes dear.
Did I miss you telling us what career you had previously?

marriedinwhite · 01/10/2011 17:38

I try to use paragrpahs when they are required. It may have been appropriate to have used two paragraphs rather than one in the two posts above. However, neither post was re-read for accuracy; it's a forum not a literacy exercise and having read both posts again I don't believe either is particularly badly worded. I am more concerned about some of the teachers I have come across who in their day to day teaching have appeared unable to distinguish between a common noun and a proper noun, spell or indeed construct grammatically correct sentences let alone use paragraphs properly.

The dreadful swearwords used by some of the teachers who are responsible for shaping this country's young people lead me to comment more than a missed paragraph - what an example you set Tethersend and Oneofsuesylvesterscheerios. You certainly both give the impression of being impeccable role models.

garlicslutty · 01/10/2011 17:38

Haven't read your thread - I'm saving it up for when I'm in a bad mood later Grin

But did want to say it's perfectly reasonable to not want a certain career because you don't like the manner in which it is usually conducted. Same applies if you don't want to be a parking warden, prison officer or beauty therapist, whatever.

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:40

No because it's not of your business. As you are so determined to find out I worked in corporate policy for a multinational. Happy?

OP posts:
CupOfBrownJoy · 01/10/2011 17:40

oh please fuck off marriedinwhite...

Or do you think you're DC's teachers never swear when out of school? Hmm

CupOfBrownJoy · 01/10/2011 17:41

oh I love a boaster Grin

They're delicious with a cuppa.

cakeoclock · 01/10/2011 17:43

Had I wanted to boast I'd have said I have a great pair, but I don't so I'd be lying.
