to think that this check out assistant was really quite thick?

So I was paying for my shopping in Morrisons this week and DD was with me with Robert, her black dolly. On taking the money the assistant looked at me and did one of those stage whisper kind of things, you know when they whisper quite loudly, really emphasising the words with overly full on mouth movements, and said "I'm not being racious or anything" and yes, she really did say Racious, not racist, "but I thought they they'd banned them now", pointing at Robert!!! Bit of an open mouthed look from me and she said "yes, I thought they'd banned black dolls these days".

I could only muster up a weak "no, I don't think so", before wandering off, shaking my head in disbelief Shock

OP posts:
ElaineReese · 30/09/2011 11:29

She's confused it with a golly.... the whole 'haven't they banned them' thing comes straight from the Daily Mail though doesn't it?

She does sound dim. But enough with the rude comments about people on checkouts.

GinSlinger · 30/09/2011 11:29

I think I'll have to set myself the target of getting racious into a conversation today and see what happens

PissesGlitter · 30/09/2011 11:29

yes it was a bit thick of her to make that comment

BUT not because she works at a checkout for fucks sake!

i have been working in shops on checkout and supervising for about 8 years and i am disgusted that my customers may have thought i am thick because of this

AmazingBouncingFerret · 30/09/2011 11:29

She must of got the doll confused with a golliwog doll.

As for some of the comments on here about checkout assistants! Shock

ViviPru · 30/09/2011 11:30

I bought Julien the Dog for my best friends' newborn.

I can't find them now, but at the time there were a couple of ridiculous reviews of Julien on Amazon that didn't seem like a wind-up (in that they were otherwise relatively sane) suggesting that he was a bit too 'black' when he arrived and might only be suitable to give to 'black children', and another saying he wasn't appropriate at all.

'WTF' doesn't even cover it Confused

ElaineReese · 30/09/2011 11:31

kits I know you're not - but some posters seem to have a confused Venn diagram of Idiots and Check-Out Operatives in their heads.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 30/09/2011 11:31

If they do, PissesGlitter, that says WAY more about them than it ever could about you.

Nasty snobby comments on this thread.

That wouldn't have been made if she was almost in any other job.

But yes, OP, she was thick.

LineRunner · 30/09/2011 11:42

I believe wankerchief was doing what's known in some circles as 'Taking the Piss,' SpanishPaella!

cheesesarnie · 30/09/2011 11:43

op didnt say the all chech out assistants are thick!she said the lady(who happens to work on a check out) was a bit thick.

im thick and i havent taken offence-not all thick people work on a check out!

love the name robert for a dolly.
the lady who happens to work at a check out was bit silly.id have said theyre not banned but using non words is a jailable offence'.

cheesesarnie · 30/09/2011 11:43

i ment check out not chech out

ViviPru · 30/09/2011 11:43

LineRunner - I'm in two minds as to whether she is or not?!

kelly2000 · 30/09/2011 11:47

I do not think the OP had an issue with the fact she worke don the check-out, I think her attitude woudl have been the same if her doctor had said it.

But i really do not see what the issue is with working on the check-out, maybe she is studying, has studied, live sin a place where there are few jobs (if we were all fired, would we turn down working in a shop because we thought we were too clever, or would we still need to eat), or maybe she likes the job. maybe it pays Ok, she likes the people, it does not stress her out, she can choose her shifts, is near to wear she lives etc. For some people their job is just that, a job that pays their bills and lets them get on with living their life, for other people their job is what they feel defines them. It takes all sorts.

Also are gollywogs banned, as i thought they were not?

wankerchief · 30/09/2011 11:48

LineRunner I wasn't taking the piss. I got my degree got a good job earning 70k a year then my boyfriend got hit by a car- a drunk posh woman in a range rover ploughed right into him at 50mph . had to quit and move out of London to get by and be able to help him recover.

Work in sainsbury's to make ends meet now to try and stay off benefits. They give me flexi shifts so i can be around for him.

With 'people' like Spanishpaella around i wonder why i bother

kelly2000 · 30/09/2011 11:48

where not wear!!

LineRunner · 30/09/2011 11:48

Bet you 50p, ViviPru! [Virtual, of course. The MN Bank of Bluff is now open.]

LineRunner · 30/09/2011 11:49

wankerchief I'm 50 virtual pence down, now!

ViviPru · 30/09/2011 11:49

kerCHING off to get me a mini-milk with the winnings

BupcakesandCunting · 30/09/2011 11:50

OP didn't say that checkout workers are thick by proxy but other people have done coughspanishpaellacough.

I work in a shop. I am not thick. However, I do get lots of muppets who assume that I must be thick because I am not doing something more worthy with my time. I'm definitely not working in a shop because it's something I can do around school hours and is actually a nice way to make extra cash. It's definitely because I've got tripe for brains.

Definitely.

wankerchief · 30/09/2011 11:51

sorryGrin

50p? Mini milks are 75p at my local shop - daylight robbery, broken Britain...

Hammy02 · 30/09/2011 11:52

I don't think anyone can make a judgement about someone's education just based on the job they are doing. Especially given the mess our economy is in. I am back to earning what I did 15 years ago due to redundacy. Not complaining but nor am I going to sit on my arse doing nowt because the job is 'beneath me'. Just thinking about the guy in that daily mail article who has been out of work for 3 years!

LineRunner · 30/09/2011 11:53

I'm bloody useless, I am.

wankerchief Don't mind me, it's me hormones. I though you were being playful. And anyway I completely agree with you that working in a supermarket is a good job for lots of people at various times of their lives, and it's not nice to make judgements.

The OP encountered a rather odd comment from a person who just happened to work in a particular place.

And I'll get me coat...

LineRunner · 30/09/2011 11:54

Thought FFS, not 'though'. Aaagh.

Now I look thick.

ViviPru · 30/09/2011 11:59

Ah, AIBU. There's absolutely no way of knowing which direction a thread can lead, as proven by this one :)
