I don't get why she is so universally vilified (aside from her jungle antics.) Ok the poo thing is a bit much and she is too skinny which isn't the best advert BUT I think she does those morbidly obese people good on You are what you eat. It is definately better to be on the thin side than morbidly obese.

When you see their diets laid out on the table and there is NO fruit and veg but tons of greasy fast food, I think she does them a great service telling them to sort their diets out. It could greatly reduce their chances of disease and even death.

I think she is vilified because people don't like to be lectured or rather they don't want to face up to or change their crap lifestyles.

I have started thinking about this recently as mum recently died of cancer so I am taking an avid interest in health and fitness and I do think that there is some sense in the notion that you are what you eat.

OP posts:
fatlazymummy · 29/09/2011 18:20

Well it's common sense really. If you eat disgusting quantities of deep fried beige food you will probably end up being obese. If you eat steamed fish, seeds and lots of fruit and veg then you will probably lose weight.
TBH I used to quite like her programmes [minus the poo bits]. The people did lose weight and look much healthier. I do think she was too extreme, thoso her recommended diet would probably work better as a short term detox. I also used to like her attitude, some of the dieters were a bit childish and whingy. Plus, by the time it got to the 2nd series people know what she's like. If you don't like her then don't apply for her programme.
Having said all that, yes it is naughty to claim false medical qualifications.

Waltraut · 29/09/2011 18:26

She has fraudulent "qualifications", she makes incorrect assertions eg that chlorophyll is good for the blood, she isn't a scientist, she is a good-enough self-publicist who got caught out so many times talking rubbish and was called to account. And fair play to her, she stopped calling herself 'doctor' and changed her website...but then wrote hilariously petulant tweets and tried to pretend they didn't come from her...she'd have been fine even 30 years ago but the Internet just did for her, frankly.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/09/2011 18:30

What is it Dara O Briain calls her, a whiney, naggy, seed pimp bitch! :o

SardineQueen · 29/09/2011 18:31

She is a fraud. And her show was "stating the obvious + looking at shit". Great viewing Confused

My mum always laughed because she would look at their "before" diet and start going on about "oooh you must be farting all the time, it must stink, you great big farty stinker" and the fat person would not sadly.

Then Gillian would go on to prescribe a diet of beans, cabbage, cauliflower, sprouts etc etc. oh yes That'll sort the farting out a treat Grin

CogitoErgoSometimes · 29/09/2011 18:32

YANBU and McKeith does have a point. She's fundamentally a TV entertainer who is to dieticians what Jeremy Kyle is to counselling.... Hmm But, putting all personal animosity to one side, sometimes people need a bit of a kick in the pants to change their behaviour - not wait until they're on a hospital trolley. And the ones she has on her programme are all volunteers so I refuse to feel sorry for them. :)

SardineQueen · 29/09/2011 18:33

would nod sadly

CristinadellaPizza · 29/09/2011 18:38

I know someone who had a primary cancer that was treated and then began eating a macrobiotic diet. She lived most of her life on an island that was low in carcinogens and kept herself fit (played tennis and swam every day). She died of cancer when she was 55.

Sometimes, if cancer is going to get you, it's going to get you and eating Trill (love that, Rhubarb) isn't going to make a blind bit of different.

CristinadellaPizza · 29/09/2011 18:38

difference

ouryve · 29/09/2011 18:41

I might have a tiny little more respect for her if she didn't out her name to overpriced pigeon food being sold as healthy snacks.

QueenofJacksDreams · 29/09/2011 18:46

Try reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre hes got a whole chapter of Gillian McKeith and why shes a fraud along with several other health lies we're fed including the 5 a day rule.

WilsonFrickett · 29/09/2011 18:52

I have never heard the 'arse or face' expression before but will certainly bear it in mind!

The whole programme was based round the two tables - beige food and nice food. Visually, that was amazing and made everyone watching go 'See! SEE! Just eat niace ham and greens and you won't be a fatty boom boom'. After you saw it 20 odd times it began to pall. And she is a quack. (She also has a humpy back but I guess that's a personal insult. Unless she got it by not eating enough calcium).

madmomma · 29/09/2011 18:56

ridiculous personality, mail order 'doctorate'.

kirsty75005 · 29/09/2011 19:16

I haven't seen the program so can't comment, but isn't Gillian Mckeith the one who thinks that leafy vegetables will photosynthesise in your colon and who shares professional qualifications with Ben Goldacre's dead cat?

minimisschief · 29/09/2011 19:18

The only thing that table full of food makes me want to do is make a fry up or order a takeaway lol

cutandpaster · 29/09/2011 19:31

my bil is some sort of doctor working in a university. About 7 years ago he was awarded a grant to lead a team studying asthma in Ethiopia.

SexualHarrassmentPandaPop · 29/09/2011 19:35

I dislike her firstly because she's a fraud and secondly because I doubt she does the morbidly obese people much good. I wonder how long those people stick to a diet of miso soup and quinoa after the cameras switch off?

Deesus · 29/09/2011 19:36

Oooh me too minimisschief!

Gillian McKeith is the best example of 'you end up with the face you deserve' I've ever seen.

cutandpaster · 29/09/2011 19:38

I chatted to him about the conclusions.

  1. Don't smoke
  2. Eat oily fish
  3. Eat fresh fruit and veg
4 Exercise 5.Cross fingers
  1. If you are only expected to show up at work four days a week, spend the free day on the golf course (he used to be a non-golfer, but was given this advice)

I already knew all of these except 6. No point being rude about it

TakeThisOneHereForAStart · 29/09/2011 19:38

faverolles - you're not standing next to her are you?

maighdlin · 29/09/2011 19:58

It could greatly reduce their chances of disease and even death.

reduce your chance of death?? i didn't know she could make someone immortal.

pollyblue · 29/09/2011 20:07

Many good, properly trained and qualified dieticians - such as Jane Clarke - have debunked many of Gillian's claims.

She's also obsessed with many expensive, unusual foods while vilifying the perefectly good, healthy produce that is easily available. So in her own way I think she actually makes a healthy diet seem all the more unobtainable to many people.

OP, if you're interested in giving your own diet an overhaul I would recommend Jane Clarke for a sensible, straightforward approach. FWIW, she helped Jamie Oliver when he was working on his school meals crusade.

madmomma · 29/09/2011 20:16

Yeah Jane Clarke's ace, and her books are good too. She writes about healthy food that you'd actually want to eat.

madmomma · 29/09/2011 20:16

Plus she is absolutely radiant with good health.

WilsonFrickett · 29/09/2011 20:18

And she doesn't make you have miso soup for breakfast!

*Disclaimer, Wilson is very fond of miso soup. Just not for breakfast.

FagAshLill · 29/09/2011 20:19

She's a liar and for that reason alone I never want to mention her again.
