To have a glass of champagne every day at 5 o-clock when I start cooking to get a little relaxing buzz?!

I love it but worry it's a bit of an unhealthy thing, I look forward to my glass for about an hour beforehand, is this wrong?!

armageddon Like a boiled egg in a deep-pile towelling robe.

bigbadbarry · 27/09/2011 18:47

If I am going to have a drink - and I often do though certainly not every day - it is 5ish, when I cook, or never. That is when I like it and especially when I am on my own, it just takes the edge off tea-bath-bed :) I don't think that is any more likely to lead to a slippery slope than a glass when you sit down in the evening or a night cap. I have one glass. (I sometimes have another when I sit down later in the evening, but mostly not.)

Argos · 27/09/2011 18:49

Look forward to, not crave it! Yes I do the spoon, have I been wasting my time?!

I don't smoke, eat well & excercise everyday. Sometimes I'll have two glasses but It's not like I'm glugging the bottle in one go, I haven't been drunk in years, just like to unwind with a glass.

good for you - enjoy it!

Argos · 27/09/2011 18:52

Find prosecco a bit sweet, I prefer a brut champangne or cava!

Your post makes me think of my own dear paternal Nana aldiwhore. She had one sherry and one cigarette every evening and died of natural causes when she was 90. She was still living independently in her first floor maisonette in Clapham. One morning she said to her cleaner that she felt a bit dizzy and funny, cleaner called an ambulance, Nanny died before she got to hospital. She was 4ft10" and had 5 children (in London, during the war) and one of those was charged with taking her sherry bottles away periodically because she didn't like to put them out for the bin men incase anyone thought she was a lush! An amazing lady.

madmomma · 27/09/2011 19:22

sounds like a fucking superb idea to me. Cheers!

Icancancatchbabies · 27/09/2011 19:42

Sounds lovely. Yanbu, does the rest of bottle go flat ?

madmomma · 27/09/2011 19:53

stick a metal teaspoon in the bottle after you've had a glass. No idea why it works but it does Smile

aldiwhore · 27/09/2011 19:55

madmomma it doesn't make a blind bit of difference, aparantly, according to my scientificcy friends who've done experiments to disprove the theory. Looks better than cling film though.

GeraldineAubergine · 27/09/2011 19:56

I think you should alternate it with a glass of port and a cigar, otherwise you are missing out on vital vitamins and minerals.

madmomma · 27/09/2011 19:56

oh. that's burst my bubble. (see what I did there?)Wink

aldiwhore · 27/09/2011 19:57

Sorry madmomma mine was burst too..... have to admit, I still do it ocassionally for old time's sake.

Pedicuri · 27/09/2011 19:58

G&T for me at 7pm when Mr Pedicuri gets home. Yum.
It is my sanity!

YABU Champagne should be a treat on special occasions.

I would have cava or prosecco instead as I secretly prefer them to Champagne anyway Grin

SexualHarrassmentPandaPop · 27/09/2011 20:04

As you've asked I would say YABU but only because I have experience of alcohol dependency in a close relative and think that generally drinking therapeutically to relax you a bad idea. Also looking forward to it an hour before hand seems a little dependant. You don't have to be drinking masses for alcohol to have a hold over you - very few alcoholics start off that way.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 27/09/2011 20:04

YABU stick to special brew like the rest of us...
