To have a glass of champagne every day at 5 o-clock when I start cooking to get a little relaxing buzz?!

I love it but worry it's a bit of an unhealthy thing, I look forward to my glass for about an hour beforehand, is this wrong?!

actually you can keep the bottle fizzy by putting a (metal) spoon in

(barman's trick)

I think life is about the small pleasures so why not. Not sure you'll be able to stick to only one glass forever though.

Quintessentialist · 27/09/2011 17:27

That nice buzz from one glass will not last long if done daily. Then you will find that you start chasing the Buzz with a second glass, then a third. Then it never comes, but by then you are too far gone to care....

So slippery slope, and IABU.

Thingumy · 27/09/2011 17:29

YANBU

I find a can of special brew peps me up while waiting for our takeaway...

Hullygully · 27/09/2011 17:29

The metal spoon is a LIE!

Bad science. Tests have shown fizzy keeps its fizz for no longer than 3 days regardless of spoon.

other than that, Cheers!

Iggly · 27/09/2011 17:34

Yabu. As Quint says, it could easily become 2, then 3 etc etc.

I never understand the whole drinking every day thing. I may be biased though as I've seen alcoholism first hand and it started out with a glass an evening. Escalated when things got tough then downhill from there.

bibbitybobbityhat · 27/09/2011 17:37

When I am going to have a drink (some days I don't) it will usually be at about 5.30 - 6.00pm, or when I start cooking.

I never drink beyond 9pm, unless I'm out somewhere.

dreamingbohemian · 27/09/2011 17:38

Hully no! It's a lie????

oh god, i've told so many people over the years

I feel dirty and ashamed

sorry OP, as you were

CogitoErgoSometimes · 27/09/2011 17:40

"I don't get why the time is such an issue? "

Rather than enjoying a glass of wine in a sociable way over dinner or with a partner it becomes the stereotype of the bored, lonely housewife, knocking back a couple of gins to get her through the afternoon

bluecake · 27/09/2011 17:43

What cogitoergosometimes says. Try going a week without and see how you feel? If you are really missing it, it's an issue. If you can take or leave it, then happily carry on as before if you want.

AlpinePony · 27/09/2011 17:46

Yabu to be lying to yourself that actually you crave alcohol and down a bottle a day.

Don't worry though, you don't have a drink problem - that's for people who drink fortified wines.

StillSquiffy · 27/09/2011 17:46

ROFL at 'slippery slope'

These days I can't drink more than 200ml of wine without getting a crushing hangover, so the rule in this house is that if I can only drink a small amount, it has to be the very best. I usually have champagne at 7 and one bottle lasts for two days, then gets thrown (usually down throat of DH)...but sometimes it's Sassicaia instead...sometimes Galpin Peak.... sometimes Cloudy Bay...

kalidasa · 27/09/2011 17:54

I also like to have a small drink while I cook (Cinzano for me - very retro!). I never have any desire to have more than one small one though, it's just the initial feeling of relaxation I really like. Tbh I don't think it's that different from looking forward to my coffee when I get to work or a cup of tea when I get home - obviously it's habit-forming but so is any routine. I wouldn't worry about it personally but I suppose it depends - bit more worrying if you never skip it and feel you'd find it hard to go without.

ErnesttheBavarian · 27/09/2011 18:07

Fisharefriendsnotfood, i think with alcohol time is an important factor. How would you feel if you had a firend staying and in the morning you offered her a cuppa and she asked if you had any champagne instead? Nothing like a bit of a buzz to statrt the day off., or going to someone's for a cuppa at3 pm, but instead they get out a can of lager and say they've been looking forward to that all afternoon. Of course you'd wonder f they had a real drink problem.

Op, i reckon craving a glass of wine at 4 every day, I wouldn't be saying 'cheers!' but more watch out.

aldiwhore · 27/09/2011 18:18

If its one glass, fair enough. It doesn't always lead to increased drinking, or a problem. My Granny had a G+T at 4pm everyday since she got married... she never drank much more (apart from VERY special ocassions) and lived a happy healthy life until she was 96.

In fact a 4pm Gin and Tonic is rather normal in some circles...

Personally I couldn't open (or afford) a bottle of champers and not finish it, therefore, for me it would be a bit wrong, however, I am partial to a G+T whilst cooking 'supper' for DH and I and rarely would have more than one on a school night.

MmeLindor. · 27/09/2011 18:22

I have a small glass while I cook most evenings. It is not a slippery slope. I just enjoy it.

Depends if you say you are craving it at 4pm or looking forward to it, there is a difference I think.

As for the spoon - it has to be a silver spoon.

We get champagne from a colleagues sister who has a vineyard in that area, and charges ?100 for a case of 6. It is our cheap everyday plonk.

MmeLindor. · 27/09/2011 18:23

No, I tell a lie. It is ?80 for the normal one. ?100 for the better one.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 27/09/2011 18:25

Yes, but cogito one's afternoon is contingent on when goes to bed.

Bearcrumble · 27/09/2011 18:27

It's all a bit 'Joan Collins with her wig off' if you ask me.

ArmageddonOuttahere · 27/09/2011 18:29

I don't drink anymore but I always treat myself to a little bowl of olives or nuts when DH is dunking DS in the bath and I'm listening to The Archers.

It's the ritual that signifies the end of the mum-day and I look forward to it, so in that respect I totally get what you mean, OP.

MmeLindor. · 27/09/2011 18:29

I knew a woman in Germany who swore by a glass of champers every day for her "Kreislauf" - circulatory system.

In fact, I know a few German women that say that. One was a auxilliary in the hospital and would have a piccolo with her morning coffee.

Georgimama · 27/09/2011 18:30

This thread is making me want a drink tbh.

ArmageddonOuttahere · 27/09/2011 18:30

"mum-day" fucking hell, that sounded so twee I might have to start on the booze again Confused

ArmageddonOuttahere · 27/09/2011 18:31

ARF at the image of Joanie, Bearcrumble

catgirl1976 · 27/09/2011 18:31

YABVU but only because I am 33 week pregnant and would LOVE a nice glass of champers Envy. I may take up your habit once DS is born

Apart from that - carry on - sounds like a lovely little pleasure to me :)

MmeLindor. · 27/09/2011 18:32
