Dh asked if I could please make him a nice sandwich.

So I made two pieces of baguette:

  1. Brie, tomato and mango
  2. Ham, tomato and mango (possibly not very nais ham)

He did a Hmm at my efforts?

Would you have any thing against mango in your sandvich?

Mango and ham? Sad
I don't think fruit and meat should ever be friends, least of all in a sandwich.
Sweet + savoury = wrong

My cafe would be lovely. It would have zinc tables and a tiled floor & huge hams hanging from the ceiling. Your sandwiches would be made by handsome young men with long green aprons & their shirt sleeves rolled up to expose a muscular, tanned and gently hirsute forearm.

& no, there would be no sliced bread, there would be sourdough or rye or lovely fresh baguettes & many delicious cakes & pastries & much excellent coffe & tea.

There would, however, be chorizo, beetroot, mayo, gherkins, crisps & tomatoes. But I would not make you eat them.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 27/09/2011 10:16

I'm coming to your cafe as long as you don't slip chorizo into my sandwich.
Can you also sort out some walnut bread? That really does go nicely with brie.
thecatate what about roast pork and apple sauce? do you really not think they are lovely together, or chicken and sage and onion.
The last doesn't really highlight what I'm trying to say, but you get the idea.

spiderslegs I would come to your cafe. I like gherkins too but not sure they go with tea/coffee. You may have to get muscle men to serve wine too.

Fruit & meat bad?
Are Parma ham & melon not good??

thecatatemygymsuit · 27/09/2011 10:27

I know, I am probably the weird one, but cannot entertain any kind of fruit/meat combo. Certainly no apple sauce with pork, cranberry with turkey etc. Parma ham and melon? Nein danke! Angry
Ok is an onion a fruit? I love onion in stuffing etc, but it is savoury, surely, or at least neutral?
My worst food nightmare would be finding a raisin in a savoury dish. There must be other fruit/meat refusers out there, surely?

Quintessentialist · 27/09/2011 10:28

Spiderslegs, I suspect you have a polish heritage.... All my polish friends and family are also great friends of gherkin and beetroot.....

(too many surelys in my last post) Yes, gherkins are good, especially with chicken or pastrami. I'll probably find out they're a fruit now, disproving my theory.
It's a sweet/savoury thing really. Reminds me of that menu in Life is Sweet (Mike Leigh film)... King prawn in jam, liver in lager [vom]

spiderslegs · 27/09/2011 10:57

Mmmm - not to my knowledge Quint, I do like vodka though so it's always a possibility.

Gherkins are, in fact, a fruit. As are cranberries which are also nice with meat. And figs.

My cafe would, of course, be licenced.

jellybrain · 27/09/2011 11:04

I quite like the sound of that. I have tuna and apple today, we're out of bananas which is my favourite. Grin

jellybrain · 27/09/2011 11:05

Whoops sorry I meant the sandwich that the OP made.

iFailedTheTuringTest · 27/09/2011 11:06

Ham and mango. Yes

Ham and tomato. Yes

Can't imagine tomato and mango working well though.

But I can't talk , I eat some seriously weird combinations

Meteorite · 27/09/2011 11:10

Mango chutney? Yes.

Mango? No, too mushy for a sandwich.
