Quintessentialist · 26/09/2011 22:26

Dh asked if I could please make him a nice sandwich.

So I made two pieces of baguette:

  1. Brie, tomato and mango
  2. Ham, tomato and mango (possibly not very nais ham)

He did a Hmm at my efforts?

Would you have any thing against mango in your sandvich?

I have no brie though.Sad

Quintessentialist · 26/09/2011 23:12

No. He did not tell me he had added blueberries to my sandwich either.

I think next time I shall make him a bagel with cream cheese and smoked salmon. And strawberries. Hey, how about gooseberries and cream cheese?

Dp thought aldiwhore's bacon, marmalade and brown sauce sandwich sounded gorgeous!

iceandsliceplease · 26/09/2011 23:14

Ham & tomato? Good.

Ham & mango? Good.

Ham & cheese? Good.

Mango & cheese? Good.

Mango and tomato? VOM.

Quintessentialist · 26/09/2011 23:17

I get it. Mango and tomatoe are BAD together. Bad.

I am not going to do it again. Mea Culpa.

Why not go for just a plainer filling of ham and peach? That is a rather nice combo on mini sub rolls.

Quintessentialist · 26/09/2011 23:37

Ham and peach! Or white flesh nectarines. Would that maybe be too overpowering? Maybe with peppered salami!

no no no OP. You smoosh the mango up with a glass of something alcoholic, bung it in the freezer and form grown up ice lollies. You cut the baguette up into little slices and toast them in the oven, curl the ham on top with a bit of brie and tomato and hey ponceo!

Will no-one think of the children????

Quintessentialist · 26/09/2011 23:43

So hang on, I make alcoholic mango ice lollies? For the children? Or was the toasted baguette meant for the kids for a poncetastic treat?

I've never linked before, so this may not work but you've put well and truly in my head now, I hope you're happy. YABU.

FlumpsRule · 27/09/2011 00:36

Don't like tomato, so I wouldn't eat your sandvich

However, mango chutney is lovely with curries- which often have tomato- so I think YANBU.

LetThereBeRock · 27/09/2011 00:54

Mango is pleasant enough,Tuna, but I'd rather have a piece of .

spiderslegs · 27/09/2011 01:09

Ahh - Flumps just made my point - mango chutney & tomato based curry - a delight.

In fact mango chutney on ham or cheese sandwich is a delight, my DF also has mango chutney with his fried eggs - I can sort of see his point.

Now sandwiches, I am the master of the sandwich, tomato is sometimes, but not always bad;

Sliced chorizo, grated cheese, red onion, crisp lettuce, jalepeno, tomato & mayo is, for instance, lovely.

As is pastrami, swiss cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, gherkin & mayo.

A cheese salad should never contain tomato though - substitute beetroot & maybe sliced egg & loads of onions.

Tuna mayo should be naked but for the addition of sliced red onion.

& a bacon & avacado on toasted bread would be rude without tomato (& a gallon of mayo).

Ham & tomato -NEVER - ham should only be served - with or without cheese & either chutney or beetroot, the best option would be a beetroot chutney.

Oh, & all sandwiches must be served with a side-order of ready salted crisps.

& cut into triangles.

frutilla · 27/09/2011 01:18

Marmite and marmalade go good together too.

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 27/09/2011 01:23

Brie and blueberries
Prawns with nectarine/peach, chilli, rocket
Mango with chicken and ?

auschopper · 27/09/2011 07:20

Mango with chicken and ?

A popular dish I make is basically, poach the chicken, then cut it into strips. Place on a flat dish in a fan arrangement, and put brie on top, and put it under the grill. Then lay it on some mixed lettuce with mango strips. It is really nice.

Another combination, that doesn't sound very good, but it is one of the best I have eaten is honey and philli cheese on toast. It is divine.

Proudnscary · 27/09/2011 07:22

Oh OP, you never, ever mix sweet and savoury. OK? Never.

Proudnscary · 27/09/2011 07:23

Oops I was ruffling your hair then OP not your entire body

Quintessentialist · 27/09/2011 09:22

Spiderlegs, I will never ever eat in your cafe. Gherkins, mayo and beetroot??? What torture is that? And with crisps, CRISPS on the side? What fresh hell is this?! Confused

You have found all my food hates and combined it into severel different sarnies. One thing I agree with. Cut into triangles. Unless it is too tall.
However, I prefer bread that is not square! Wholemeal, seeded, rye bread, Granary, etc.

White square bread (or wholemeal ready sliced for that matter) never enter our threshold.

I love fruity cheese! Sweet and savoury go brilliantly together.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 27/09/2011 09:38

I would eat in spider's cafe as long as she ditched the chorizo. It is horrible stuff.
I am struggling to see a problem with the OPs sandwich. I think I'd prefer the tom and mango with brie TBH,but I don't really like meat that much.
Feta would be nice with mango too.
I am off shopping in an hour or so, guess what lunch will be. I do get a bit miffed at the cost of a mango, we used to pick them outside the kitchen door when we lived in Thailand.

FlumpsRule · 27/09/2011 10:01

You will all be digging out the mango chutney now...

Proudandscary - how can you say never to sweet & savoury? What is wrong with your taste buds?

Favourite sarnies btw

  • toasted cheese & onion. Simple Grin
  • lightly toasted bread with butter & mayo, sliced apple, ham & CRIPS IN IT TOO! Ready salted of course - flavoured would be ghastly Grin

Now I shall have to ¥*$€^ you all because you know the ingredients of my special sandwich

FlumpsRule · 27/09/2011 10:03

Of course that should be CRISPS - crips would make an awful sandwich
