Overweight Mothers give birth to fat babies?

AIBU to think that measuring the BMI of babies in the womb, is a step too far? I mean, surely a child's birth weight (unless it's extremely high/low) isn't exactly an indicator of anything much...considering all babies feed differently?

My DS2 was only 5lb 7oz (the smallest by far of my 3 DS) and yet, he's the heaviest of all of them and gained about an ounce per day from birth.

Other babies, can be born heavy and lose an ounce a day....so what does the study really mean in terms of anything much? Confused

Low birthweight can lead to obesity in later life, isn't that what research is finding? And obese mothers can often give weight to smaller babies because of poor nutrition and pregnancy complications.

Surely this discussion is not about birth weight but about fat deposits in the baby when born therefore it may not be due the fact the mother is overweight but rather the diet she eats while pregnant. I was 14st when i concieved baby and only 14st 6lb at the the end of my pregnancy because i knew i was over weight and ate a healthy sensible diet whilst pregnant. When i got home after having a healthy 5lb 12oz baby i weighed myself and i was 13st 6lb so i actually lost half a stone in my pregnancy! I am now 12st which is down to breast feeding and my baby is still small for his age and skinny being in 6 to 9 month clothes at 15 months! But i think he would not have had unhealthy fat deposits because even tho i was overwieght and still am i ate a healthy diet while i was pregnant surely that is what is important!
