To be insulted by my MIL's idea of a gift for DD

DD is her 1st Grandchild. She is 3 months old. MIL returned from a shopping break to New York last week bearing thewanky generous gift of a christmas tree decoration with DD's name on it. In September. Am I wrong to think this is a bit odd?

My MIL gave me one of these for my first.

I thought it was charming and thoughtful.

Every year when I put it on the tree I remember dd's first Christmas with us. Smile

Sorry as I haven't read the whole thread because I was too busy wetting myself at OP's comment that the bauble wasn't handcrafted or anything just a bog standard plastic bauble.

Good grief woman. You are gonna have to pull yourself together or you will spend your life being insulted by the cheap plastic tat anyone who knows your child will now dump in your house.

Oh no! I was going to buy some of those for my nieces and nephews. Best not then, in case my sisters are insulted...

NickyNackyNooNoo · 25/09/2011 09:02

We have loads bought by my Mum - really not my thing but the kids love them & that's what really matters Smile

as a mother of sons, I sometimes really really worry that one day I'll be a MIL who can do no good...

Well done for taking this thread in good spirits op. I think mothers of tiny babies can be forgiven most irrational thoughts!

oldraver · 25/09/2011 12:57

I think its lovely. Did you want to be the one to buy the 'First Christmas' thing ?

Blu · 25/09/2011 13:02

I'm glad you're looking at it afresh!

I have our decorations from when I was a child, and feel a special excitement when they come out. And every year DS chooses a new one, and when he leaves home I'll pack them up for him to take with him for his own tree.

I predict a MN thread in about 2026 "DP wants to use all thse manky old fashioned baubles that MIL has given him. AIBU to refuse?"
