To think this children's drink is just a bad idea

I'm not sure I know exactly what my objections are, but this drink just seems such a bad idea.

Ohhh, thought it was going to be a thread about the New Super Fruit Shoot With Added Chemicals

squeakytoy · 24/09/2011 11:53

Why? because it is chocolate flavour? If it does the job, give the child the nutrition without the fuss, then I see no problem with it at all. Chocolate itself is not a bad thing, in moderation, and that drink uses natural cocoa rather than a bar of melted dairy milk. YABU. :)

deliakate · 24/09/2011 11:54

Its a silly idea. Its like mums who think keeping their toddler on formula will make sure they are getting all the vitamins and nutrients they need. Marketing.

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 11:54

Sorry! But Fruit Shoots I can vocalise my objections to!

No, I don't think you are. Pandering imo. It's almost telling them that it's fine not to eat vegetables if they drink the drink. Some days my DD3 will eat every vegetable known to man, other days she decides they are 'scusting' and won't touch so much as a petit bloody pois. But I sure as hell know that she would probably become a complete PITA (more than usual...) if the chocolate veg drink option was there for her.

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 11:55

I suppose I object because she seems to be saying that if your child eats pizza, chips and burgers it's all made ok by having a chocolate drink.

Orchidskeepdying · 24/09/2011 11:55

sounds revolting!

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 11:56

And squeakytoy I am in the chocolate is fine in moderation camp too. As you say, it's a bean.

RockStockAndTwoOpenBottles · 24/09/2011 11:57

Chocolate is a bribery tool, not something she gets every day. It also sounds pretty rank imo.

silverfrog · 24/09/2011 11:58

hmm.

it is ok, as a supplement.

but no drink, however nutritiously formulated, can replace the amount of soluble and insoluble fibre that you get form actually eating the fruit/veg.

and supplements are no substitute for actual good food.

that said, if it didn't contain several things my dd1 can't have (some fruits, oat fibre) I would probably use it - no point denying the supplement while also trying to improve her range of acceptable foods (she has severe ASD and food ishoos)

Tee2072 · 24/09/2011 11:58

I agree it sounds revolting.

I am also appalled at the woman's story for getting her daughter to try veg. She didn't 'win'; her daughter 'won'. Because now she gets to have chocolate daily. So what if it has veg/fruit in it? It's still daily chocolate.

Stupid.

pigletmania · 24/09/2011 11:59

YABU what's wrong with that drink. Kids can be so faddy so getting the 5 a day in them the usual way be hard.

If DD were to drink it I think it is absolutely bloody marvelous. she's not eaten a fruit or vegetable for the last 12 years and is unable to tolerate any of the 500000 suplement's i've bought over the years. I don't want to spend £40 testing it though.

AtYourCervix · 24/09/2011 12:00

jeezus i put an apostrophe in suplements i was so excited.

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 12:01

But surely part of our job as parents is getting them to understand that they need to eat a wide variety of foods, including fruit and veg. Bundling it up in a chocolate shake is just teaching them that it's ok to drink chocolate every day.

Atyourcervix - in what way unable to tolerate supplements?

which ones - tablets? or liquids? and what supplements?

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 12:02

Hmmm, DS is only 1. Am I underestimating how bloody minded children can be?

I am not a big fan of eating fruit. I know it is good for me, but I dont actually enjoy eating it. Much easier it it is in a smoothie that I can just gulp down and be done with in under a minute, than faffing about, ending up with sticky hands, bits stuck in my teeth.. and having wasted spent money on a juicer, I did try out a few different recipes... I can honestly say that anything with beetroot in, or green veg, tasted vile. If it was masked by chocolate flavour I could probably have enjoyed it rather than gag.

For children who are ill and struggling to eat, and children who are a nightmare to get a reasonable amount of veg into, a drink like this which they would drink because it tastes good, rather than tastes horrible seems a sensible idea to me. Life is too short to spend mealtimes cajoling and bargaining with a child to eat their five a day.

TheSkiingGardener · 24/09/2011 12:02

soverylucky Not getting worked up, just interested.

All of them Silver. Every single different vitamin, whether chewey, liquid, tablet, capsule, drink or meal. every single bloody one. I have tried. she can't. same as every single meal she has had for the past 12 years. it's amazing that she hasn't got scurvey.

silverfrog · 24/09/2011 12:05

squeakytoy: smoothies are awful for yout teeth, have much less fibre in (leading to many more digestive problems).

smoothies/juice can only count as one of your five a day, I thought, due to the lack of fibre?

pigletmania · 24/09/2011 12:05

but theskiing try telling that to a pre school child who won't eat anything but cheese and crakers. You should watch Fast Food Baby on BBC3 and watch one of the parents giving their toddler coke in a bottle than you will be Shock. This drink is fine, its no different to other smoothies on the market, its healthy and packed full of nutrients whats the problem! Some adults cannot eat fruit and veg on their own, and prefer smoothies, as long as they are getting it into their bodies it does not matter how. Lots of fuss over nothing imo. Chocolate is not a bad thing, as people have pointed out its derived from the cocoa bean.

TrillianAstra · 24/09/2011 12:05

How the hell did you end up on that website in the first place?
