I had the pleasure of sitting behind 2 locallers at TheJoyThatIsSwimmingLessons today.

I normally let the yamyam flow over me, but oh my very shirt fuse today just could not stand it.

It took about 76megapixels of resolution not to stand up and shout "Use proper words you massacrists".

Does your local accent drive you full of angst?

AIBU to dislike it so terribly much?

I'm from Liverpool (can hear the calm down, calm down jokes from here) :)

Not a big fan of mine, and DH has an even thicker scouse accent. We are living in New York and the yanks either think we are Scottish or talking a different language :) Hasn't done any harm in either careers, in fact normally breaks the ice - scouse jokes are tiresome though!

LO is quite funny, started off pronouncing things really well (probably because my accent softened due to living in Surrey) - then we moved to the US and DH got to spend more time with him, now dropping G's everywhere - walking is now walkin, etc. Now wondering what the prep will think of us on our return - he will have a slight american mix to it then too. They will have to take us as they find us!

Born in Uk moved to Malta age 6 weeks then to Germany .lived in Kent ( sheppy) then Grain.Moved to Worcs then to Altrincham then to lancashire then to north east Essex now in Hert,s .If people plump for anything they guess the southwest one place I have never lived

Dad from Kent mum from Manchester but she only sounds it when drunk and hates being reminded of it

LadyMary · 21/09/2011 05:23

Doesn't bother me. I'm a Londoner and love the various accents around me. I do find cockneys who attempt to 'talk posh' quite amusing, though.

allhailtheaubergine · 21/09/2011 05:38

I love that new accent young people are using - that black chap with the beautiful smile on TGBBO speaks like it. Love it. And it infuriates me because I can't imitate it at all, and I'm not bad at mimicking accents usually.

The only accent that genuinely riles me is the fake British accent a la Gwynneth in Emma and Renee in Bridget Jones. Everyone laalaas on and on about how utterly utterly brilliant their accents are... yes, but where in the country are they supposed to be from exactly? There is no such thing as a 'British' accent. They sound cringey and fake to me.

Newport. Now there's an accent. Special. Love it.

cumbria81 · 21/09/2011 06:16

I'm in Leeds and agree with the posters above that say the accent is horrid. But I love the Sheffield accent, it's so much more pleasant. Maybe we could bring some up to teach our children how to speak nicely?

LilBB · 21/09/2011 06:34

I'm from near wigan. My accent is recognisable as northern but it's not that strong. I don't mind the accent round here but some people just sound so dumb when they are really broad. Something a lot of people do is swap Gs and Ds so cuggle instead of cuddle, same with Ts and Ks so bokkle instead of bottle. It drives me bonkers. They also drag out their words so they goooooo on for aaaaages. Oh and neet instead of night, coo-k instead of cook. I don't mind an accent but say the bloody word properly.

So no YANBU.

diddl · 21/09/2011 07:22

"hate beyond shelves"

"yamyam"

Sounds as if you´re a "massacrist" yourself tbh.

Hey Collision! Not seen you in ageeesssss! Smile

ObviouslyOblivious · 21/09/2011 08:48

YABU. Thank god I don't have an accent :o

RedRubyBlue · 21/09/2011 08:50

What's the difference between a kangaroo and a kangaroot?

A kangaroo is an Australian marsupial and a kangaroot is a Geordie stuck in a lift. Smile

Don't be a snob. I'm from the south-west but i didn't feel conscious of my accent until some London lads started calling me 'the Caramel Bunny'...
I hate 'Ja-fake-an' - real West Indian accents are nice though.

What is this 'yowm' business? I sat on a jury (in Newcastle!) with someone from the Black Country and couldn't concentrate on the points she was making because the 'yowm' was a complete novelty to me.

CJMommy · 21/09/2011 09:15

'yowm' = yow am = you are ( simples ) Grin

BelleEnd · 21/09/2011 09:17

saggar the Potteries accent is truly wonderful!

I love regional accents. I am from North Wales and have exactly the same accent as Gruff Rhys from the Super Furry Animals- Very strong. People do think I'm thick when they hear me, but I quite like to expose their prejudices- I know I'm not thick! :)

MsGee · 21/09/2011 09:23

YANBU my PILs are yamyams and it took my years to understand them (they don't understand my family either - east lancashire). I just used to nod furiously and speak for 2 minutes on a random subject hoping they didn't pick up on it. Know I know his FIL better I am sure he ramped up the accent just to see if I'd say anything.

My FIL still says 'ow bin wench' to me.

Cheryl Cole goes to the hairdressers.

"Alreet, bonnie lass. What d'yee fancy the day, like?"

"I think I'd like a perm"

"Okay. 'I wandered lurnley as a clood what flurts on hay o'er vales an'hills"

Minus273 · 21/09/2011 09:26

"Hate beyond shelves", I've never heard that phrase before. Where does it come from.

Whenever I hear someone local to me on the television I cringe and pray I don't sound like that. DH likes to 'cheer' me up by telling me I do. Mind you he is terrible at recognising different accents, whereas I am not bad at guess where someone is from based on their accent. He tried to convince me that everyone in England sounds the same and everyone in Scotland sounds the same. He does have significant hearing loss so I suppose that would have a lot to do with it.

sistersootica · 21/09/2011 09:29

YABU. Rubbish. My husband and family and everyone I love are so called 'yam yams'. We all come from somewhere. Get over yourself.

CalamityKate · 21/09/2011 09:29

I hate my accent (Essex). In my head I think/talk quite posh for some reason, so when I catch myself dropping an aitch or saying "wa'er" instead of water, or hear myself on an answering machine or something, I die a little inside.

SmethwickBelle · 21/09/2011 09:30

I like it!, I have a southern accent as I'm an import, but I think the Black Country accent is softer and more friendly.

There is a sort of Essex/Herts/Cockney accent I love though when I hear it and it is a very precise articulate but common as muck sort of twang that is a bit like Del Boy and it reminds me of being at school and being cocky or having a laugh with my friends.

I don't like the nasal sarf london twang that teenagers assume even if they live 40 miles out. Innit.
