I had the pleasure of sitting behind 2 locallers at TheJoyThatIsSwimmingLessons today.

I normally let the yamyam flow over me, but oh my very shirt fuse today just could not stand it.

It took about 76megapixels of resolution not to stand up and shout "Use proper words you massacrists".

Does your local accent drive you full of angst?

AIBU to dislike it so terribly much?

I don't mind a regional accent (with the obvious exceptions of course) but i really would not want one myself.

schroeder · 20/09/2011 22:09

Well Leeds especially, but not keen on any of them.

Feel free to lambaste the Norfolk broad accent of my birth to make things fair Grin

Move then.

You might get funny looks for saying you hate something beyond shelves - what's wrong with shelves?

purplepidjinawoollytangle · 20/09/2011 22:16

Massacrists as a neologism meaning that they have massacred the language? Or a misspelling of masochists, in which case they are not inflicting pain on themselves (masochism) and are in fact inflicting it on you (sadism)

Hmm Wink

PS I like your neologism if that's what it was

workshy · 20/09/2011 22:17

the leeds accent is terrible -makes everyone sound thick as pig ... not very intelligent
they seem to think the alphabet has fewer letters than it actually does and it is coming out of my beautiful, inteligent DCs mouths!!!!

I am forever telling them off correcting them

but then I'm from manchester so I'm not sure I'm one to talk lol

oldsilver · 20/09/2011 22:18

I quite like mine - but other parts of the city just sound like a flock of seagulls screeching and cawing over a tasty bite of not quite dead pigeon.

BupcakesandCunting · 20/09/2011 22:19

"An er wus gooin dow-wun the tow-wun and er asked for a pow-und."

That's it though, ay it bab?

Why settle for one syllable in a one syllable word when you can make it into a two syllable words. Drives me bloody loopy, it does.

I feel your pain. Here, have a Wine (why-in) Wink

I am a north-easterner marooned in the south-west. I don't hate the local accent by any means but I have real difficulty taking it seriously. It always sounds like people are putting it on for some reason.

Wonder if DP feels the same when we go "oop north".

I like real accents but the 'mockney' from middle class kids drives me mad.

purplepidjinawoollytangle · 20/09/2011 22:24

Just drink the Wine and listen to my calming dulcet Queen's-English-with-a-hint-of-Hampshire Wink

mumblechum1 · 20/09/2011 22:24

There isn't really a local accent where we currently live, people from all over here have settled in the area, it's a sort of non- accent of home counties but I'm from Cumbria and I do think that's a bit of a thicko accent, my nephew sounds like he's had a lobotomy.

And scouse! Grates on me. I have to turn the radio off if a scouser comes on, it brings back horrible memories of living in Lpool for 3 years and being the victim of 13 crimes in that period.

I really like Edinburgh and Geordie accents, Icould listen to those all day. Oh and West Country.

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/09/2011 22:24

I like my local accent when it's spoken by old men. It gives me a warm feeling.

I've tried to tone mine down a bit. But 'av 'ad t'ge it up. T'much lark 'ard werk.

NotADudeExactly · 20/09/2011 22:25

Me too, RedRubyBlue. So does the faux gangsta speak by the same demographic (maybe younger). Makes me want to slap people.

Tillyscoutsmum · 20/09/2011 22:25

Yowm being unraysonable. I love the Black Country accent because I have one

mumblechum1 · 20/09/2011 22:26

saggar, are you in Salford by any chance?

Tillyscoutsmum · 20/09/2011 22:26

..... but its much more difficult to write...

Maybe it should be Yowm Bein Unraysonabull ?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 20/09/2011 22:26

Nah am in t'Potteries. Stoke to yow. Grin

skirt · 20/09/2011 22:27
