To think shops shouldn't charge for 'tiny baby' clothes

Looking at baby clothes in boots today (i'm sure lots of other places do them). They had tiny tiny vests suitable for 3lb babies that they were charging £8 for! And it had a tag on them that said the front opening for hospital wires. Horrible.

I've just found them online and the hospital wires tag isn't on them, it's now described as:
"Low Birth Weight Jacket features a friendly bear print, a wrapover front and opens flat with soft velcro fastenings to the front and sleeves to make dressing the little chap much easier."

If you 3lb baby is so ill in hospital it has tubes and wires, It's criminal to charge £8 for something for them to wear!

The boots stuff is lovely :)

LDNmummy · 19/09/2011 20:07

Sorry that should have read "so I wouldn't flame you"

thisisyesterday · 19/09/2011 20:07

WiiUnfit depends... some are, some aren't. some are just bigger and safety tested to higher weights.

if you happen to be poor and have a disabled child it's just tough luck though isn't it. cos you can't afford one. like my cleaner, who can't afford a car seat for her seriously disabled daughter.

thisisyesterday · 19/09/2011 20:09

i could understand them being a BIT more expensive due to less being made etc etc (although actually i think a massive company such as britax could swallow some of that anyway)
but selling a car seat for £600 when an ordinary one costs less than £100 is outrageous IMO

LDNmummy · 19/09/2011 20:09

Actually, I don't understand why people are attacking you on this thread. You your feelings were good if misguided.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 19/09/2011 20:10

Oh piss off, hateme

As far as I can see, the OP suspected that companies are taking advantage of the parents of very ill babies. She asked if she was being unreasonable. MN has told her.

It doesn't make her stupid.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 19/09/2011 20:12

Me neither, LDNmummy.

thisyesterday- has she tried family fund?

JarethTheGoblinKing · 19/09/2011 20:23

I read the OP to mean that the shops shouldn't charge extra for tiny baby clothes, and shouldn't make extra money because a baby is prem.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 19/09/2011 20:23

If that is the case OP, then YANBU

BupcakesandCunting · 19/09/2011 20:27

I think that the OP's title was supposed to be "To think that shops shouldn't charge so much for tiny baby clothes" judging by what she said in her first post.

Working on that assumption, I think that she's had a bit of an unfair kicking on here. She's thinking of financial strain being put on parents already under a lot of pressure and that's not a bad thing, if not a little naive or misguided.

I'm a bit shocked really at the level of venom on here. It's uncalled for. It's not like she's suggested that we skin kittens to clothe tiny babies for goodness sake.

thisisyesterday · 19/09/2011 20:30

sanctiomoanyarse... not sure, i will ask her. she is fairly clued up on what she's entitled to, but will check

Sirzy · 19/09/2011 20:31

I have just looked on boots website and the prices they are charging for these clothes seems to be pretty much inline with what they charge for similar clothes for bigger babies

hiccymapops · 19/09/2011 20:31

I think the op is trying to get a rise out of people, like she did on the mcdonalds thread. Sorry, I can't take her seriously.

donthateme · 19/09/2011 20:32

Erm... She said shops shouldn't charge for prem baby clothes. Not that they should charge less. Ridiculous idea

SanctiMoanyArse · 19/09/2011 20:32

FF reduced their criteria not long ago- before it barred anyone from applying if they ahd mroe than one disabled child becuase of the associated icnome.

They are fab; bought us a shower and a gokart for ds3 who cannot balance on a bike.

other option is ebay, you'd be amazed.....

BupcakesandCunting · 19/09/2011 20:35

Well, even if she is proposing what is a daft idea, it's not out of spite so just stop with the "pathetics" and "stupids" and "ridiculouses". You can tell her that she is being unreasonable without making yourselves sound like a pack of rabid rottweilers.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 19/09/2011 20:38

Same Op who claims never to feed her children McDonalds and has managed to produce 4 DC's by the age of 21 but only 1 DC lives with her.
Hmm

JarethTheGoblinKing · 19/09/2011 20:38

Yeah, calm the fuck down people Grin

wot Bupcakes said.

Either the OP is a troll and deliberately trying to get a rise out of people (mission accomplished) or missed a word out her post.

AppleHEAD · 19/09/2011 20:43

Sorry if someone has said this already but so you think that people may want to go and buy setjomh for their teeny baby? They can't take them home so they want to normalise the situation or take control of something which they have no control over. That despite the tubes and machines they are wearing something mummy or daddy got them.

Sadly I can tell you this from experience but funeral directors don't charge for the funerals of babys. You get the whole thing free... So sometimes when life is appalling you get free things from considerate big business.

BupcakesandCunting · 19/09/2011 20:50

Well, I don't know her past posting history. Believe it or not, I am not an encyclopedia on the lives of Mumsnetters. I am judging on this thread, an I judge that there are a lot of snippy cowbags on here.

Oh sorry, I mean straight-talking, tough-speakers.

WiiUnfit · 19/09/2011 20:51

thisisyesterday, thanks for clearing that up. I had the logic that it must go through more manufacture / testing or something along those lines hiking the prices up. It is very sad your cleaner cannot afford a car seat for her daughter, I know this probably won't cover the cost she is facing with this but is she getting all the benefits she is entitled to? IME (that is limited - I worked in a council building), councils have benefit advisory teams that can meet with individuals to make sure they are getting everything they are entitled to, maybe she could check that out?

donthateme · 19/09/2011 20:53

The funeral director may not decide not to charge for their own services when a young child' is involved. But there will certainly be plenty of costs which they will charge to you. There are many costs other than the funeral directors services

thefirstMrsDeVere · 19/09/2011 21:02

I didnt pay for any costs at the funeral.
I didnt have to pay for the crem.
Or the church

I paid for the cars and flowers and urn.
